Your Apple Cash balance is not automatically forfeited just because you stop using Apple Pay or turn Apple Cash off on a device. The account stays open, and Green Dot Bank currently lists a $0 inactivity fee. However, under the account terms, funds may eventually be transferred to the appropriate state under that state’s unclaimed-property law. To keep control of the money, transfer it to a U.S. bank account or spend it; to close the account, you must first meet Green Dot’s closure conditions.
What happens if you stop using Apple Pay?
Apple Pay is the payment service; Apple Cash is a separate account and balance provided by Green Dot Bank. Simply stopping Apple Pay use does not close your Apple Cash account or immediately take away its funds.

Turning Apple Cash off in Settings on one device is also not the same as closing the account. Apple says the account remains open and the funds remain in the balance, although Apple Cash is unavailable on the device where you turned it off. Apple also warns that turning it off does not stop recurring payments set up through Apple Cash. Review and cancel any recurring payment separately if you no longer want it to run. Apple’s instructions for turning off or closing Apple Cash explain the device setting and account distinction.
Can inactivity make you lose the balance?
Green Dot Bank’s current fee table lists the Apple Cash inactivity fee as $0. That means there is no listed inactivity charge; it does not mean an unused balance is protected indefinitely.

The Apple Cash terms separately say Green Dot may transfer, or “escheat,” funds to the appropriate state if there is no account activity or you do not communicate with the bank within the period set by state law. The terms do not establish one nationwide countdown, so there is no reliable universal number of years to give. The applicable period depends on state law. If funds have already been transferred, contact Green Dot Bank and the relevant state unclaimed-property office about making a claim. See the Apple Cash Terms and Conditions and Apple Cash fee table.
Choose what to do with your Apple Cash
| Choice | What happens to the account and funds | Cost or next step |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the account open and unused | The account remains open and the balance remains there, but state-law escheatment may apply after the relevant period. | Green Dot’s current fee table lists a $0 inactivity fee. No universal dormancy period is specified. |
| Turn Apple Cash off on a device | The account remains open and the balance remains in it; Apple Cash is unavailable on that device. | Turning it off does not stop recurring payments set up through Apple Cash. |
| Transfer the balance to a bank | The transferred amount moves out of Apple Cash to your U.S. bank account. | Apple Support says a standard bank transfer is free. Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card has a fee; Apple’s current guidance lists 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. Check the fee shown before confirming because terms can change. |
| Close the Apple Cash account | The account is closed after Green Dot processes the request; you must first clear pending transactions and reduce the balance to zero. | Green Dot’s terms require a registered account and a $0 balance for at least 30 consecutive days, along with any other conditions the bank may set. Contact an Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank. |

Request account closure
- Resolve any pending transactions.
- Transfer or spend the remaining funds so the Apple Cash balance is $0.
- Keep the registered account at a $0 balance for at least 30 consecutive days, as specified in Green Dot’s terms.
- Contact an Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank to request closure and confirm whether any other conditions apply.
Apple’s account closure instructions and Green Dot’s terms cover the closure process. Closing the account does not mean all related records disappear immediately: Apple says it retains account information, including transaction history, as required by law and for fraud prevention, without specifying one retention duration in its notice.
