Your outcome depends on what the builder actually controls: source code, database, user accounts, uploaded files, secrets, hosting, domains, authentication, scheduled jobs, connectors and AI services. A code-generating builder may let you deploy the exported project elsewhere. A visual platform that keeps logic inside its own runtime may require a rebuild.
The practical question is not only “Can I export my code?” It is “Can I run, secure and maintain the production app without the builder’s services?”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
What actually leaves with you?
An app is a collection of assets and services, not just its screens. An export may include the frontend source, routes, styles and dependency manifest while leaving the production database, file uploads, authentication and deployment behind.
| App component | What may be portable | What you must verify or recreate |
|---|---|---|
| Frontend and application code | Source files, routes, components, styles and package/dependency files | Framework version, build commands, runtime compatibility and any generated code that assumes the builder |
| Database | Schema and, if supported, an export of records | Production data, indexes, migrations, connection settings and ongoing backups |
| Users and authentication | User records only where the provider permits an export | Password hashes, sessions, OAuth credentials, email verification and authorization rules |
| Files and media | Uploaded objects if the provider offers a supported download or copy process | Object paths, permissions, CDN URLs and references stored in the database |
| Secrets and configuration | Names of environment variables or configuration keys | Actual secret values, API keys, callback URLs and production settings |
| Hosting and domains | Deployment instructions and build output | New host, DNS, TLS certificate, logs, scaling and rollback plan |
| Managed services | Integration code, where it is ordinary code | Replacement for builder-managed email, payments, AI calls, connectors, queues and scheduled jobs |
That separation explains why an exported project can compile while the live app is still broken: its code may be present, but its data, credentials or platform APIs are not.

Two fundamentally different kinds of builder
Code-generating builders
These tools produce a conventional project that you can inspect and place in a repository. If the generated project uses ordinary web frameworks and services, moving it is primarily a deployment and dependency exercise. You still need to migrate data and replace services that remain tied to the builder.
Lovable’s documentation says application source and content created with its service belong to the creator, subject to third-party rights, and can be synchronized to a repository. Its documentation describes three exit patterns: move only the frontend while retaining Lovable Cloud, move backend services to infrastructure controlled by the owner, or make a complete move that deploys the code, migrates data and services, and replaces calls still routed through Lovable. The same documentation says apps created from May 13, 2026 use TanStack Start, while older apps use React plus Vite. Therefore, deployment instructions depend on when and how the project was created.
Lovable’s own wording is important but should be read as vendor documentation rather than an independent migration test: “The application source is yours and runs on any compatible host, so moving the app is a deployment change rather than a rewrite. The work is in the parts that run through Lovable: a backend move includes a data migration, and app connectors and AI features need a replacement at the destination.”

Visual or no-code platforms
Some builders store workflows, permissions and database behavior inside a proprietary visual runtime. You may be able to export records or a visual project definition, but not a self-contained codebase that runs elsewhere.
Bubble’s competitor comparison, checked by Bubble on October 6, 2026, distinguishes these models. It describes Lovable and Bolt as providing exportable code, while Bubble’s application logic, data and privacy rules are visual and have no generated code underneath; Bubble apps are hosted on Bubble. That description applies to the products and configurations on that page, so confirm current capabilities for the specific account before committing to a move.

An independent article about Replit identifies its hosted database and deployment as infrastructure dependencies to plan for during an exit. Another comparison article, reflecting public information as of March 2026, reports that Replit supports code export but still requires planning for backend data migration and deployment, while characterizing Bubble logic as platform-bound. Those observations are useful warnings, not universal rules for every builder or project.
Ownership is not the same as independence
“Do I own the code when I build with an AI app builder?” has at least three separate answers:
- Copyright and contract: The builder’s terms may assign or license project output to you, subject to third-party components, model output terms and other rights.
- Technical possession: You need an export or repository that you control, not merely permission to view the project in a dashboard.
- Operational independence: You must be able to build, deploy, authenticate users, access data and call required services without the builder.
A source repository does not prove that the production system is portable. Check the dependency manifest, server-side functions, database connection code, authentication adapter, storage client and every URL or SDK call that points to the builder.
What to inventory before you leave
Create an exit inventory while the original app still works. Record the exact builder, project age, framework, deployment mode and account that owns each resource.
- Runtime: framework, language version, package manager, build command, start command and required Node or other runtime version.
- Data: database engine, schema, migrations, indexes, production records, backups and retention settings.
- Identity: user table, password or identity-provider arrangement, OAuth applications, roles, permissions, sessions and email-verification flow.
- Files: storage bucket, object keys, access rules, transformations and references in database rows.
- Secrets: API keys, signing keys, webhook secrets, encryption keys and environment variables. Never commit their values to a public repository.
- Integrations: payment provider, transactional email, analytics, maps, search, webhooks, external APIs, AI model providers and proprietary connectors.
- Automation: cron jobs, queues, background workers, scheduled emails and moderation or indexing tasks.
- Operations: domain registrar, DNS records, TLS, monitoring, logs, error tracking, rate limits and support contacts.
For every item, mark it as exportable, replaceable or platform-bound. A platform-bound item is a likely rebuild task, not a minor configuration change.

A safe migration sequence
1. Preserve a controlled copy
Clone the repository or download the complete export into an account controlled by the owner. Tag the last known-good version. Save the builder’s project settings, deployment notes and dependency lockfile. Keep the original service running; it is your reference and rollback target.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute2. Export data and files
Use the provider’s supported process to export database schema and records, permitted user data and uploaded files. Check row counts, timestamps, relationships and file sizes after export. If the provider cannot export password hashes, plan for password resets or a staged identity migration rather than assuming users can sign in immediately.
3. Recreate the destination
Choose a host and backend you control. Create the database, storage, email and other services before changing the application. Add environment variables through the destination’s secret manager. Do not paste production secrets into source files or issue trackers.
4. Remove builder-specific calls
Search the project for builder SDKs, API base URLs, serverless function endpoints, storage URLs, authentication adapters and AI or connector calls. Replace each with the destination service or an ordinary provider-neutral implementation. Update callback URLs and webhook endpoints at the same time.
5. Deploy a staging copy
Build and run the project outside the builder. A successful build proves only that dependencies resolve; it does not prove that production behavior works. Connect staging to a controlled database and non-production credentials, then exercise the critical paths.

6. Test the flows that can fail silently
- New account creation, sign-in, sign-out, password reset and OAuth callback.
- Role and authorization checks, including an attempt to access another user’s record.
- Forms, validation, uploads, downloads and deletion of personal data.
- Payments, refunds, webhooks and duplicate-event handling.
- Email delivery, links, unsubscribe behavior and bounce handling.
- AI requests, rate limits, token accounting, moderation and failure messages.
- Scheduled jobs, queues, retries, logs and alerts.
7. Cut over with a rollback
Back up the old system, lower DNS time-to-live if appropriate, and announce any expected downtime or reauthentication. Move DNS or production traffic only after staging and a production rehearsal pass. Keep the old service available during the transition when feasible. Monitor errors, authentication and critical transactions, and be ready to point traffic back if the new deployment fails.

You export the frontend but keep the builder backend
This is the least disruptive partial move. The new host serves the interface while the builder continues to provide database, authentication or functions. It can reduce hosting dependence, but it is not full independence: a later shutdown, pricing change or API change at the builder can still affect the app.
You move the backend to your own account
This provides more control but introduces data migration, user identity handling, storage transfer, secret rotation and service configuration. Expect a period in which old and new systems must be compared carefully. Do not write to both databases unless you have a deliberate consistency plan.
You make a complete move
A complete move replaces hosting, backend, data, authentication, storage and builder-managed integrations. It is the closest equivalent to owning an ordinary software project, but it has the largest test surface. AI features and proprietary connectors often require the most redesign because their APIs, permissions and billing assumptions may be embedded in the builder.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If application logic and privacy rules exist only in a visual runtime, export what the platform supports—data, media and documentation—then model the behavior independently. Rebuild screens, workflows, authorization and integrations on a stack you control. Treat it as a new implementation with a data migration, not as a one-click deployment.

How to compare builders for exit risk
Ask these questions before starting a new project or renewing a plan:
- Can I obtain readable source code, and does it include server-side logic?
- Can that code build and run on a clean machine without the vendor’s dashboard?
- Can I export the schema, production records, user data and uploaded files?
- Can authentication, roles and privacy rules move without forcing every user to start over?
- Are secrets, deployment settings, logs and scheduled jobs accessible to me?
- Which features use proprietary connectors, hosted databases or vendor-specific AI calls?
- If the service disappeared, what exactly would I rebuild?
Request a small test export before building a business-critical product. Clone it, install dependencies, run the documented build and inspect whether the result contains ordinary code or references to an account-only runtime.
Costs, timing and user impact
No reliable universal migration price or duration exists. The effort is driven by the number of records and files, identity complexity, builder-specific services, compliance requirements, destination architecture and how much custom testing the app needs. A static frontend with no accounts can be relatively simple; an app with payments, roles, uploads, background jobs and AI calls can require a substantial reimplementation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Users may need to sign in again if sessions are invalidated or password hashes cannot be transferred. OAuth providers may require new callback approvals. File URLs can change, and email deliverability can dip if the sending domain is not configured correctly. Tell users what will change, schedule the cutover, and provide a recovery contact.
Common mistakes and recovery plans
- “The export built, so we are done.” Run end-to-end tests; a build does not migrate data or secrets.
- Leaving hidden vendor calls in production. Search code, server functions and configuration for vendor domains and SDK names.
- Copying secrets into Git. Rotate any exposed key immediately and use a secret manager.
- Changing DNS first. Deploy and test the destination before traffic moves; preserve a rollback path.
- Assuming users can keep their passwords. Verify whether identity data and password hashes are exportable; prepare reset or reauthentication messaging.
- Forgetting files and webhooks. Validate object permissions, callback URLs, webhook signatures and retry behavior.
- Retiring the old app too early. Keep it available until monitoring confirms the new system handles real traffic.
If the destination fails, restore DNS or routing to the old deployment, stop writes to the partially migrated system if necessary, document the divergence, and repeat the migration after correcting the failed dependency. Never improvise a database merge during an outage without a verified backup.
Bottom line
Leaving an AI app builder is easy only when the app is genuinely portable: readable source, exportable data, transferable identity and replaceable services. Otherwise, the export may be a starting point rather than a finished migration. Audit dependencies early, stage an independent deployment, test every critical flow and switch traffic only after you can operate the app without the builder.
