There is no universal outcome. A price increase, cancellation, refund, or shutdown is governed by the provider’s current terms, your billing channel (the provider’s website, Apple, or Google Play), the plan’s billing period, and consumer law where you live. OpenAI’s cited Terms of Use promise at least 30 days’ notice before a subscription increase takes effect at the next renewal, and promise advance notice plus a refund of prepaid, unused services if OpenAI discontinues its services. Anthropic’s cited pricing page says plans and prices may change at its discretion and that payments are generally non-refundable, subject to its Consumer Terms and local law. Those are provider-specific statements, not industry-wide guarantees.
If you reject a higher price, cancel through the channel that bills you before the renewal deadline. Cancellation normally stops the next charge but does not itself refund the period you already paid for. A separate refund request may be available, depending on the provider, platform, purchase location and reason.

The short answer: four events are treated differently
Readers often use “cancel,” “refund,” and “shutdown” as if they were the same event. They are not.

- Your cancellation: usually turns off the next renewal while leaving the current paid period intact.
- A refund request: is a separate process and is not automatically created by cancellation.
- A provider shutdown: may trigger a contractual refund for unused prepaid time, but only if that provider’s terms say so or applicable law requires it.
Before doing anything, identify the merchant on your receipt. The company that operates the AI service may not be the company processing your card charge. A subscription purchased inside an iPhone app is generally managed through Apple; one purchased through Android’s store is managed through Google Play. The correct cancellation and refund controls follow that billing relationship.

What the published terms say about price increases
OpenAI: 30 days’ notice and next-renewal timing
OpenAI’s Terms of Use, published around December 2025, state: “If we increase our subscription prices, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice and any price increase will take effect on your next renewal so that you can cancel if you do not agree to the price increase.” In practical terms, the stated protection has two parts: a minimum notice period and a promise that the higher amount will not be charged before the next renewal.
The sentence describes OpenAI’s published terms, not a rule that binds every AI service. It also does not erase mandatory consumer rights in a country or state that gives you a different cancellation or notice entitlement. Save the notice showing the old price, new price, effective date and renewal date in case the timing is disputed.
Anthropic: discretion to change, but no universal notice period stated
Anthropic’s cited Claude pricing page says that plans and prices are subject to change at its discretion. The same page says payments are generally non-refundable except where its Consumer Terms or applicable law provide otherwise. The cited material does not state a universal number of days’ notice for a price increase, so do not assume that OpenAI’s 30-day period applies to Claude or to another provider.

Plan availability can change without being a shutdown
A provider can pause new sign-ups, stop upgrades, retire a tier, or change included features while continuing to serve existing subscribers. An OpenAI support notice cited in the source material describes a temporary pause on new sign-ups and upgrades to a particular plan, with separate effects for existing customers. That is an example of a plan-availability change, not evidence that the entire service has closed. Treat a plan retirement and a total service discontinuation as different questions: one may move you to another tier, while the other can activate a shutdown clause.
How to decide what to do when a higher price is announced
Use the notice itself as your decision document. Record these items before cancelling or accepting:
- New recurring amount: note the currency, tax treatment and whether the figure is monthly or annual.
- Effective date: identify the first renewal that will use the new price. A notice date is not necessarily the charge date.
- Current renewal date: find it in the account page, receipt or app-store subscription screen.
- Rate protections: check whether a trial, introductory offer, annual commitment or grandfathered price ends at the same time.
- Billing owner: confirm whether the charge comes from the AI provider, Apple or Google Play.
- Cancellation route: follow the control named by that billing owner, then save the confirmation.
If you do not accept the increase, cancel early enough to satisfy the channel’s deadline. OpenAI and Anthropic support guidance both advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. That is a practical buffer, not a universal legal rule; your receipt or local law may provide a different deadline.

Access normally continues through the paid period
OpenAI’s support guidance says cancellation stops future renewals while paid features remain available until the current billing period ends. Anthropic gives the same basic result for a paid Claude plan: cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period, and paid access continues until then. The exact end timestamp can depend on the account’s time zone and the store’s billing system, so keep the cancellation confirmation.

Use the channel where you subscribed
OpenAI identifies different routes for web purchases, Apple App Store purchases, Google Play purchases and self-service Business billing. Anthropic likewise instructs users to cancel through the platform used to sign up. A subscription may not show a cancellation button on the provider’s website when the store is the merchant of record.
Deleting an account is not a substitute for cancellation
OpenAI specifically warns that deleting an account does not cancel an Apple-billed subscription. Cancel the store subscription first, verify that renewal is off, and only then delete the service account if that is still your intention.
Uninstalling an app does not stop billing
Google Play’s general help guidance says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. If an app is removed from Google Play, Google says future renewals for subscriptions tied to that app are cancelled, but that rule should not be confused with manually uninstalling an app that remains available.
Refunds: cancellation is only the first question
Ordinary cancellation usually does not refund past charges
OpenAI states that cancelling does not automatically refund previous charges. Its refund guidance says eligibility depends on the purchase and location and gives examples that may qualify: a verified OpenAI billing error, validated unauthorized charges, or a documented OpenAI service or access failure. An accidental purchase, forgetting to cancel, dissatisfaction, or a plan change does not by itself guarantee a refund outside an applicable exception.

Anthropic’s cited pricing page says payments are generally non-refundable, subject to its Consumer Terms and local law. That wording is not an absolute prohibition; it directs you to the consumer terms and any mandatory local protections that apply to your transaction.
Submit a separate request through the correct route
After turning off renewal, use the provider’s refund process if the provider billed you. For an Apple or Google Play purchase, use the store’s refund workflow unless the provider specifically directs you elsewhere. Include the receipt, transaction identifier, account email, charge date, plan, reason and the date you cancelled. A cancellation confirmation proves that a future renewal was stopped; it does not prove that an earlier charge qualifies for reimbursement.
Store policies can limit or vary the result
Google Play’s general guidance says cancellation normally preserves access through the time already paid and usually does not refund past subscription payments, subject to exceptions. Its partial-refund guidance identifies a route for users in Israel, France, Germany and New York State, with different conditions and timing. Those are location-specific policies, not a global entitlement. Apple-billed transactions likewise follow Apple’s purchase and refund rules rather than a provider’s web-billing workflow.

If the AI provider shuts down
OpenAI’s stated promise is limited to prepaid, unused services
OpenAI’s Terms of Use say: “We may decide to discontinue our Services, but if we do, we will give you advance notice and a refund for any prepaid, unused Services.” The limiting words matter. The clause concerns services paid for in advance that have not yet been used; it does not say that every historical subscription payment is refunded, nor does it specify that all ancillary losses are covered.
For an annual plan, the practical question is how the provider calculates the unused portion and how it delivers the refund. Keep the invoice, the service-discontinuation notice and evidence of the date access ended. If the provider offers a claims form or a deadline, follow it even if the terms describe a refund.
Do not assume another provider has the same shutdown clause
The cited Anthropic material establishes that payments are generally non-refundable subject to its Consumer Terms and local law, but it does not establish a universal promise covering every possible Claude shutdown scenario. The same caution applies to other AI services: read the current subscription agreement for a discontinuation section instead of importing OpenAI’s wording into another contract.
A plan retirement may produce a different remedy
If only your tier is retired, the provider might offer migration, a replacement plan, a credit, or continued service for existing customers. None of those outcomes can be inferred from a total-service shutdown clause. The notice should say whether your access ends, changes features or moves to a different price.
Billing-channel differences that commonly cause mistakes

The merchant shown on your receipt is the fastest way to resolve uncertainty. If the receipt names a store, start there; if it names the AI company, start in that company’s billing settings.
A practical action plan
- Locate the latest receipt and write down the merchant, plan, currency and renewal date.
- Save the current subscription terms and the complete price-change or shutdown notice as PDFs or screenshots.
- Compare the notice’s effective date with your next renewal and with any 24-hour cancellation guidance.
- If you reject the new price, cancel in the same platform where you subscribed.
- Confirm the screen or email says renewal is off and states the access end date.
- If you believe a refund applies, file a separate request with the provider or store and attach the receipt and cancellation confirmation.
- For prepaid annual time after a shutdown, ask specifically how unused service will be calculated and when payment will be sent.
- If the result conflicts with mandatory consumer law where you live, consult the relevant consumer-protection authority or legal adviser.
How to compare payment risk between AI subscriptions
Price alone does not show how exposed you are to a provider change. Compare these six contract features before choosing a monthly or annual plan:

An annual subscription can offer a lower effective rate but leaves more money prepaid when terms or service availability change. A monthly plan reduces the amount at risk in any single charge, while still requiring you to monitor renewal notices.
Common failure modes and fixes
- “I deleted the app, so I will not be charged.” Reopen the Apple or Google Play subscription screen and cancel there.
- “I cancelled, so the last charge must be refunded.” Submit a distinct refund request; cancellation normally addresses only future renewal.
- “The provider gave another company 30 days’ notice, so I have that right too.” Check your own provider’s terms and local law; notice periods are not universal.
- “The plan disappeared, so the whole service shut down.” Read whether the notice concerns a tier, sign-ups or upgrades rather than discontinuation of all services.
- “The support agent confirmed cancellation verbally.” Obtain written confirmation showing the renewal status and access end date.
Local law and changing terms
Provider contracts and store policies operate alongside mandatory consumer protections. OpenAI’s terms expressly say they do not override mandatory local cancellation rights. The applicable rule can depend on your country or state, the seller’s location, the purchase channel and whether the plan is digital content or a recurring service. Because terms and platform policies change, verify the live wording and your account notice immediately before acting. This article explains subscription mechanics, not legal advice.
