If you bought an Xbox game separately, it does not disappear from your account when the title leaves Game Pass. The Game Pass listing is a subscription entitlement; a separate purchase is a different account-linked license. If you only played through Game Pass, however, your access ends when the subscription ends or the game leaves the catalog, whichever happens first.
The two entitlements are separate
The answer depends on how your account obtained the game. Game Pass provides access to a changing library while you maintain an eligible subscription and while Microsoft keeps that title in the library. Xbox’s Game Pass FAQ says subscribers can use library games until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the Game Pass library (Xbox, accessed October 13, 2026).

A separately purchased game is recorded as an acquisition on your Microsoft account. Its availability is governed by the Store terms for acquired digital content, not by the game’s continued presence in the Game Pass catalog. Seeing a title in Game Pass, installing it, or playing it through the subscription is not by itself proof that you purchased it.

What happens in each situation
You only used Game Pass
When a game leaves the library, Game Pass no longer supplies the license to launch it. An installation can remain on the console, but installation is not the same as entitlement. The console may show the game’s icon and files while still requiring you to buy the game or maintain another valid license before it will start.

If your subscription itself expires first, the result is the same for games you never bought: access through Game Pass stops when the subscription expires. Catalog status and subscription status are separate conditions, so renewing a subscription does not guarantee that a removed title will return to the library.
You bought the game separately
A purchase made on the relevant Microsoft account remains a separate entitlement when the Game Pass listing is removed. You should be able to launch the installed copy under that account and reinstall it through the platform’s supported library or download process if it is no longer installed.
That answer means “the purchase is separate,” not “digital access is guaranteed forever under every circumstance.” Microsoft’s US and Canada Consumer Store Terms of Sale, updated September 2026, state that software and other digital content made available through the Store is licensed, not sold. Those terms also reserve the ability to disable access for certain reasons and disclaim a general obligation to provide a re-download or replacement except where applicable law requires one.

You installed it before it left
Leaving the catalog does not convert a subscription installation into a purchase. If there is no separate transaction on your account, the installed files do not establish ownership. If there is a separate transaction, the installation is simply a local copy of content associated with that purchase license; the Game Pass removal does not erase the purchase record.
How to check whether you actually bought it
Use the account’s transaction record rather than the presence of the game on your console. Menu names can differ slightly by console generation and software version, but this process separates a purchase from a subscription installation:
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you used to obtain the game. A different family member’s account, a second Xbox profile, or a different regional account can make a legitimate purchase appear to be missing.
- Open your Microsoft account order or purchase history. Look for the game’s transaction, the date, and the account shown as the buyer. A Game Pass monthly charge is not the same record as a game purchase.
- Check the console library while signed in to that account. On Xbox, open My games & apps, then Full library, and look under the games you own. Labels can change with dashboard updates, so use the equivalent owned-games or library view if your console displays different wording.
- Try the supported install or download action. If the store presents an install option tied to your account rather than a price, that is consistent with an owned entitlement. If it shows a purchase price, verify the account, edition, and region before buying again.
- Check the edition. A purchase of one edition, add-on, or bundle may not include a different edition shown in the catalog. Match the product name and platform version in your order history to the installed item.
If the order is present but the console still asks you to buy the game, fully sign out and back in, confirm that the console is online long enough to validate the account, and check for service or licensing messages. Do not purchase a second copy until you have confirmed the account and edition.

Why a purchased digital game can still have limits
“You keep the purchase when it leaves Game Pass” describes the relationship between two entitlements. It is not a promise that every digital title will remain downloadable and playable in every future situation.
- Digital content is licensed. The Microsoft Store terms for US and Canada describe digital content as licensed rather than sold. The legal terms can differ in other countries.
- Access can be disabled in specified circumstances. The same terms reserve controls that can prevent access to digital content. The exact grounds and remedies depend on the applicable terms and law.
- Re-downloads are not unconditionally guaranteed. The terms disclaim a general obligation to provide a re-download or replacement except where applicable law requires it.
- Account access matters. A purchase is tied to the account and platform ecosystem through which it was obtained. Losing access to that account can prevent you from using the entitlement even though the purchase once existed.
- The game can depend on other services. Updates, publisher services, multiplayer infrastructure, and platform authentication may affect what an installed game can do. The Game Pass FAQ establishes when catalog access ends; it does not guarantee that every technical or service dependency will continue indefinitely.
Region changes can affect a digital purchase
The cited Microsoft Store terms for the United States and Canada warn that changing an account or device profile region can prevent re-downloading or re-streaming purchased content and may require repurchase in the new region. That wording should not be generalized to every country, because store terms and consumer protections vary by market.
Before changing your account or console region, record the original purchasing account and region and check the terms that apply to both locations. A title’s catalog availability can also differ by region, plan, and platform, so a game visible in one market may not appear in another.

Digital purchase versus a physical Xbox game
A disc is a useful comparison because it is a different purchase format, but it does not eliminate every dependency. The Store terms discuss packaged games separately from digital content.

The distinction is therefore not “digital always works, disc always works.” It is that a separately purchased digital copy and a disc are not the same entitlement as temporary Game Pass catalog access.

Check the catalog before relying on Game Pass
Xbox says game titles and availability vary over time, region, subscription plan, and platform. Use the live Game Pass library for your country, plan, and device before starting a game that you may not finish during the current catalog window. Do not rely on an old article, screenshot, or a title’s previous inclusion.

If you decide to buy a game that is leaving, verify that the purchase is made on the Microsoft account you intend to use and that you are buying the correct edition for your Xbox console or Windows device. The catalog’s departure date and the store’s purchase listing answer different questions: one concerns subscription access, the other concerns a transaction.
Troubleshooting common post-removal problems
The game shows a lock icon
First establish whether the game was purchased or only installed from Game Pass. Check order history, then sign in with the purchasing account. If no transaction exists, the lock is consistent with the catalog entitlement ending. If a transaction exists, verify the edition and account before escalating the problem through Xbox or Microsoft support.
The game disappeared from the library
Confirm that you are viewing the full library rather than only the Game Pass section, and check hidden or filtered items. Then verify the order history on the account used at checkout. A regional account change, a different platform edition, or an account mismatch can make a valid purchase difficult to locate.

Use the owning account’s library or supported download route instead of the Game Pass catalog page. If the store does not recognize the purchase, stop before paying again and check the original transaction, region, and product edition. The US and Canada Store terms do not provide a blanket re-download guarantee, so a technical or licensing issue may require support or a remedy under applicable law.
The game launches but online features do not work
A purchase license and an online service are different dependencies. Confirm that the console is signed in, the game is updated, and the publisher’s required services are available. The fact that the game was purchased—or that it once appeared in Game Pass—does not by itself promise continued operation of every online feature.
Bottom line
Game Pass is access to a changing library, not a record of ownership. When a title leaves, anyone relying only on the subscription loses that library entitlement. A separately purchased copy remains a separate account-linked license, subject to the Microsoft Store terms, account and region rules, and the technical services the game requires. Check your order history and owned-games library to determine which situation applies before buying the game again.
