A manufacturer’s closure does not automatically tell you whether a repair will be covered—or who must handle it. Check who issued the warranty, whether you bought a separate service contract, what the seller may owe under your state’s law, and whether the company entered bankruptcy. A brand buyer or successor may help, but do not assume it took on the old warranty.
First, identify which promise covers the repair
A product warranty and a separately purchased service contract are different agreements. The product warranty is the manufacturer’s written promise about defects and remedies such as repair, replacement, or refund. A service contract is a separate agreement, often sold for an added price, and may name another provider or claims administrator. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains the distinction in its guidance on warranties and extended warranties and service contracts.

Read the documents for the legal entity named as warrantor or contract provider, the administrator handling claims, the repair process, exclusions, and any role assigned to the retailer or dealer. A familiar brand name on the product is not enough to establish which company owes performance.

For an auto service contract, the FTC says the dealer may have to perform if the administrator goes out of business; it also says an administrator might have to fulfill the contract if the dealer closes. Ordinary closure is different from bankruptcy
A company can close without filing for bankruptcy. If it does file, the court process, notices, claim schedules, estate assets, and deadlines can affect what a customer can do. Filing a claim does not guarantee payment.
If the company is in Chapter 7
U.S. Courts guidance says unsecured creditors receive a distribution only if the bankruptcy estate has assets available and they file a proof of claim. Consult the case notices and the Chapter 7 bankruptcy process information for the procedure; do not infer from the filing alone that a warranty claim will be paid.

If the company is in Chapter 11
For corporate Chapter 11 cases, proof-of-claim requirements can apply when a claim is not listed or is listed as disputed, contingent, or unliquidated. Check the case notice, debtor’s exact legal name, claims agent or trustee, claim status, and deadline. The U.S. Courts’ Chapter 11 overview explains the general process. - Gather the paperwork. Find the written warranty, receipt, product registration, service-contract documents, and records of previous repairs or communications. The FTC recommends keeping the warranty and receipt.
- Identify the responsible entities. Note the product maker, named warrantor, seller or dealer, service-contract provider, and claims administrator. Use the contact details in the relevant documents and ask who is handling existing claims.
- Verify any successor arrangement. Look for an official notice from the company, buyer, dealer, or contract provider. Ask specifically whether existing warranties or service contracts are being honored and how to submit a claim.
- If bankruptcy is involved, check the case documents promptly. Confirm the debtor’s legal name, chapter, claims contact, whether your claim is listed and how it is classified, and any proof-of-claim deadline. Follow the notice and court docket rather than relying on a general description of bankruptcy.
- Keep a record of your claim. Save dated messages, claim numbers, estimates, repair invoices, and any responses. If the issue is unresolved, the FTC points consumers to state or local consumer-protection offices and state attorneys general.
Can you use an independent repair shop?
For non-warranty repairs, federal warranty law generally restricts a warrantor from conditioning coverage on the use of specified parts or services unless those are provided free or the warrantor has an FTC waiver. The FTC describes this rule in its Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law.

That protection does not guarantee that a particular shop can repair a particular device, or that compatible parts, diagnostic tools, or technical information will remain available after a manufacturer closes. Before authorizing paid work, check whether the repair could affect a still-valid warranty or service contract, ask for an estimate, and keep the invoice. State law can also affect warranty rights, so a significant dispute may call for advice specific to your state.
