There is no universal outcome. After a closing auction, an unexecuted balance can be cancelled, moved into a post-close session, carried to another auction, left resting on the order book, or allowed to expire. The result is determined by the listing venue, the order type, its time-in-force instruction and your broker’s handling rules.
Start with the exchange and the order instruction
“The market is closed” does not by itself tell you what happened to an unfilled order. A closing auction is a specific matching event with its own eligibility and cutoff rules. Once that event ends, the venue may have another matching phase, may leave eligible orders on the book, or may cancel them immediately.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Venue and listing: NYSE, Nasdaq, London Stock Exchange (LSE) and Nasdaq Nordic use different auction and post-auction procedures. A broker may route an order to a venue other than the exchange you expected.
- Order type: Market-on-close (MOC), limit-on-close (LOC), Good for Session (GFS), Good ’til Canceled (GTC), Closing D, IOC and other instructions have different lifetimes and auction eligibility.
- Time-in-force: This determines whether an order is eligible only for one session, can persist to another session, or must be treated as a new order on a later day.
- Broker policy: Your broker can restrict, cancel or re-submit instructions even when the venue’s rulebook would permit a residual order to remain active.
Without those details, statements such as “all leftover closing-auction shares are cancelled” or “every limit-on-close order carries over” are unreliable.

What the possible outcomes mean
An unexecuted quantity can follow one of four practical paths. The labels in your trading platform may differ, so check the order history and the broker’s time-in-force description.
| Outcome | What happens to the remaining quantity | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate cancellation | The unfilled balance is removed when the closing auction or its permitted follow-on session ends. | Whether the instruction was limited to the closing auction and whether a post-close phase was available. |
| Post-close matching | The residual can participate in a defined session after the auction, often under a narrower price rule. | Session length, eligible order types, matching price and any opt-out setting. |
| Carry-forward or resting | The order remains eligible for another auction or stays on the book while its time-in-force remains valid. | Whether the venue carries the specific instruction forward and when it becomes active. |
| Expiration | The order remains inactive until its stated expiry, then is removed without execution. | Expiry date, session definition and whether a stop or conditional order has triggered. |
Price protection also matters. A residual may be allowed into a follow-on session only if the established closing price satisfies its limit condition. A quantity that fails that condition can be cancelled or left inactive even when another order from the same auction continues.
NYSE: closing-auction cutoffs and venue-specific handling
The NYSE closing auction is conducted at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time under Rule 7.35. The exchange publishes imbalance information for Market Day and MOC interest, allowing participants to see indicative supply and demand before the auction.
NYSE’s floor guidance describes important cutoffs. Restrictions on entering or cancelling MOC and LOC interest begin before the auction; a commonly cited restriction begins at 3:50 p.m. ET, and many cancels or modifications are rejected from 3:58 p.m. ET. Exact treatment depends on the security and the instruction, so an order that appears editable earlier in the day may be locked shortly before the close.

For an unfilled NYSE order, do not infer a carry-forward merely from the fact that it was a LOC or MOC instruction. Determine whether it was accepted for that closing auction, whether any portion executed, and whether the order was eligible for a later session under the rule for that security. NYSE-published rules also contain venue-specific cancellation treatment for certain Nasdaq securities routed through NYSE systems, which is another reason the listing and routing destination matter.
How to read a NYSE order history
- Open the execution report and confirm the exchange or market center that accepted the order.
- Check whether the status says “partially filled,” “expired,” “cancelled” or “rejected,” rather than relying on a portfolio-level position screen.
- Compare the timestamp with the 3:50 p.m. and 3:58 p.m. ET cutoffs shown in the applicable order-entry rules.
- If a residual is shown as open after 4:00 p.m., ask the broker whether it is resting for a permitted session or merely awaiting final cancellation processing.
Nasdaq: an eligible LOC remainder can enter the Extended Trading Close
Nasdaq provides one of the clearest examples of a post-auction path. After the Closing Cross establishes the Nasdaq Official Closing Price, an ETC Eligible LOC Order may participate in the Extended Trading Close (ETC) if that closing price is at or within the order’s limit. The residual is therefore not automatically cancelled at the instant the Closing Cross ends.
Participation is conditional. A participant can disable ETC participation, and an LOC order that does not meet the eligibility or limit-price requirement cannot use that path. If an eligible order is still not fully executed when the Extended Trading Close ends, Nasdaq’s rule states that the unexecuted portion is cancelled.
Nasdaq decision sequence
- Closing Cross: The order attempts to execute in the regular closing auction.
- Price test: Nasdaq compares the Nasdaq Official Closing Price with the LOC limit.
- ETC eligibility: If the order is eligible and participation has not been disabled, the remainder enters the Extended Trading Close.
- Final disposition: Any quantity still unexecuted at the end of ETC is cancelled.
This sequence applies to the defined Nasdaq LOC process, not to every order submitted near the close. A broker’s order ticket may use a similar label while applying a different destination or time-in-force, so verify that the order was actually routed as an ETC-eligible LOC order.

LSE SETSqx: carry-forward, post-close activation and inactive orders
The London Stock Exchange’s SETSqx system uses scheduled auctions rather than the same closing process as NYSE or Nasdaq. LSE guidance says that Good for Session (GFS) orders can carry forward to remaining auctions later that day and remain visible during call periods.
The LSE trading-system guide also distinguishes what happens after an auction price is established:
- Some orders priced at the auction price become active in the post-close session.
- Orders priced worse than the auction price remain inactive rather than immediately trading.
- Triggered stop orders can stay parked for a later session if they have not expired.
Those outcomes depend on order type and price relationship to the auction price. “Unexecuted” on SETSqx can therefore mean an order is queued for another same-day auction, active in a post-close phase, or inactive until a later session. The order’s GFS status and expiry must be checked together.

Nasdaq Nordic: optional Trading@ClosingPrice
Nasdaq Nordic offers an optional Trading@ClosingPrice state after the lit order-book closing auction. The modified state lasts 10 minutes and matches additional volume only at the established closing auction price. Because trades in this phase do not alter the equilibrium closing price, it is different from returning to normal continuous trading.

Only participants and orders eligible for that optional state can use it. If your broker does not elect the session, or your order is not eligible, the residual follows the ordinary cancellation or expiry rule for its instruction. A fill at the closing price during those 10 minutes is therefore possible on Nasdaq Nordic, but it is not a universal right to trade after every closing auction.
Can you trade at the closing price after the auction?
Sometimes, but only where the venue provides a post-close mechanism and your order qualifies. Nasdaq Nordic’s 10-minute Trading@ClosingPrice session is an explicit example. Nasdaq’s Extended Trading Close can also match an eligible LOC remainder, subject to the Nasdaq Official Closing Price being within the limit and to the order’s ETC settings.
These sessions do not generally let you name a new price and trade freely after the close. Their price is constrained by the established closing price or by the venue’s limit test. If no such session exists, or if your order is not eligible, a new order submitted after the auction may have to wait for the next regular session and can be subject to overnight risk.

Why MOC, LOC, GTC and GFS behave differently
MOC and LOC are closing-auction instructions. Their execution opportunity is tied to the venue’s closing process, and their residual treatment depends on the venue’s post-auction rules. LOC adds a limit condition; an auction price outside that limit can prevent execution or post-close eligibility.
Best Value
GFS is a session-based instruction in the LSE SETSqx materials. A GFS order can carry forward to remaining auctions that day, but that does not mean it remains live indefinitely or across calendar days.
GTC can remain open beyond one trading day under the broker’s terms. However, persistence in an order-management system is separate from execution eligibility at a closing auction. A GTC order may be treated as a new received order each day it persists for regulatory reporting purposes, and corporate actions, price collars or broker policies can still alter its status.
Closing D and IOC are additional instructions that may appear on a broker’s ticket. Their exact auction eligibility and residual treatment are venue- and broker-specific; read the destination and time-in-force description instead of assuming they follow MOC or LOC behavior.

SEC Rule 605 addresses how market centers report order handling, not whether your broker must keep an order alive. The rule says that unexecuted and uncancelled orders are reported as received, and that GTC orders left unexecuted in whole or in part at the end of regular trading hours should be reflected as having been received on each day they persist.
That reporting treatment should not be read as an instruction to carry an order forward. A broker can cancel a residual under the venue’s rule or its customer agreement, while the market center’s report records the order according to Rule 605. To learn whether your order is still executable, use the live order status and broker policy, not a Rule 605 report.
A practical checklist after the closing auction
- Record the venue: Note the exchange or market center in the execution report, not just the stock symbol.
- Identify the instruction: Confirm MOC, LOC, GFS, GTC, Closing D, IOC or another time-in-force.
- Separate filled and unfilled quantities: A partial execution can leave a residual with a different status from the executed portion.
- Check the auction price: For limit-based follow-on handling, compare it with your order’s limit.
- Look for a post-close session: Determine whether ETC, Trading@ClosingPrice or another defined phase was available.
- Read the final status timestamp: “Pending cancel” or “pending expiration” is not the same as “open.”
- Review broker settings: Some platforms let participants opt out of a post-close phase or automatically cancel residuals.
- Ask a precise support question: Provide the order ID, venue, instruction, limit and timestamp, and ask whether the remainder is live, inactive, queued for another auction or cancelled.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming every exchange follows NYSE timing: Nasdaq, LSE and Nasdaq Nordic have different sessions and eligibility tests.
- Confusing an order screen with an execution report: A stale “open” label can persist while a cancellation is being processed.
- Treating a limit-on-close order as a market order: The limit can block both the auction fill and a permitted post-close fill.
- Assuming GTC means guaranteed execution: It describes intended lifetime, not a promise that the order remains eligible in every auction or survives every broker event.
- Using Rule 605 to answer a customer-account question: Regulatory reporting and broker persistence are separate issues.
- Submitting a replacement without checking the first order: If the residual is still live, a replacement can create unintended duplicate exposure.
How to compare two venues or broker instructions
Use the same five tests for each option:
- Persistence: Is the residual cancelled, carried forward, left resting or allowed to expire?
- Price: Must it trade exactly at the auction price, within a limit, or at ordinary continuous-book prices?
- Timing: Does handling end immediately, continue for a defined post-close window or extend to a later auction or day?
- Eligibility: Which order types and time-in-force flags qualify?
- Control: Can you opt out, cancel or modify the residual, and until what cutoff?
Applying those tests to the published examples produces different answers: Nasdaq offers a conditional ETC route for eligible LOC residuals; LSE SETSqx can carry GFS orders to later same-day auctions and can leave some residuals inactive; Nasdaq Nordic provides an optional 10-minute closing-price session; NYSE emphasizes auction cutoffs and security-specific handling rather than a single universal carry-forward rule.
