What Happens to the International Space Station When It Retires?

NASA’s current published plan is to operate the International Space Station (ISS) through 2030, then guide it through a controlled reentry over an unpopulated ocean area. Atmospheric heating should destroy most of the station; some dense, heat-resistant components may survive and fall within the planned debris footprint. NASA is also working to move research and human activity to commercially operated low-Earth-orbit stations, although no completed replacement or guaranteed handoff has been established.

What happens to the ISS when it retires?

The retirement process is designed as a managed engineering operation, not an uncontrolled fall. The United States, Canada, Japan, European Space Agency member nations and Russia currently plan to continue operating the station through 2030. That is NASA’s published plan as of its August 5, 2026 International Space Station FAQ; it is not a guarantee that later policy, funding or international decisions cannot change the date.

After the final crew has returned safely to Earth, controllers will allow atmospheric drag to lower the orbit as far as practical, use deliberate maneuvers to reduce the altitude further, and then perform a final deorbit burn. The burn will place the station’s predicted reentry corridor over a remote, unpopulated ocean area. Most of the structure should burn up or vaporize. Components that are dense or unusually resistant to heat may survive and splash down inside the targeted footprint.

When will the space station be retired?

The current 2030 operating horizon

NASA’s current plan calls for ISS operations through 2030, with the participating governments presently committed to that horizon. NASA’s August 2026 FAQ describes the United States, Canada, Japan, ESA member states and Russia as planning to operate the station through that year. The date should therefore be read as a current target, rather than a legally immutable deadline.

NASA’s FY 2026 budget technical supplement also treats 2030 as the operating horizon and identifies a dedicated U.S. Deorbit Vehicle as central to a safe transition. Public discussion has included proposals that could alter the retirement schedule, but those proposals are not evidence of an enacted change to NASA’s published plan.

How the controlled deorbit will work

1. Complete operations and return the crew

The final sequence begins only after the crew has safely departed. The station is not intended to be abandoned with astronauts aboard while its orbit is lowered. Controllers will first put the complex into the configuration needed for its final uncrewed phase and confirm that visiting spacecraft and other vehicles are clear of the reentry operation.

2. Let natural drag do part of the work

Even at the ISS’s altitude, the upper atmosphere is thin enough to produce drag. That drag gradually removes orbital energy. The station’s large solar arrays and other exposed surfaces make the effect significant, but natural decay alone does not provide the precision needed for a responsible final reentry. Operators will use natural drag wherever practical and reserve propulsive maneuvers for controlling the timing and ground track.

3. Lower and align the orbit

Current station propulsion capabilities and visiting spacecraft will perform deliberate altitude-lowering maneuvers. Smaller adjustments can line up the station’s ground track and predicted debris footprint with the selected ocean region. This targeting work matters because the station circles Earth roughly every 90 minutes; a small change in timing or orbital energy shifts where the ground track crosses the atmosphere.

4. Perform the final targeting burn

A large final maneuver will supply the push needed to direct the station into the target footprint. NASA selected SpaceX to develop and deliver the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle (USDV). Once delivered, NASA will own and operate the vehicle for the deorbit mission. The selection is part of the transition plan, not evidence that the vehicle has already completed its mission.

5. Break up during atmospheric entry

NASA’s reentry modeling expects the solar arrays and radiators to separate first, followed by modules and truss sections. Additional fragmentation will occur as the remaining pieces encounter increasing aerodynamic forces and heat. Most hardware is expected to burn up or vaporize. Modeling cannot guarantee that every component will disappear, so the plan allows for surviving dense or heat-resistant pieces to reach the uninhabited ocean area.

Will the ISS fall to Earth?

Yes, but “fall” does not mean that the station will randomly plunge onto an arbitrary location. The ISS will be deliberately deorbited and guided into a chosen ocean region. Its orbit will be lowered until atmospheric drag produces reentry, with a final maneuver used to make the timing and footprint as predictable as possible.

NASA summarizes the safety goal this way: “The primary objective during space station deorbit operations is the responsible re-entry of the space station’s structure into an unpopulated area in the ocean.” The statement comes from NASA’s International Space Station Transition Plan FAQ, updated July 18, 2024.

Where will the space station come down?

NASA has described the destination as an unpopulated area of ocean selected to minimize risk to people and populated land. The exact operational footprint depends on the station’s final orbit, atmospheric conditions, vehicle performance and the timing of the deorbit sequence. For that reason, it is more accurate to describe a planned remote-ocean corridor than to name a single permanent impact point years in advance.

The target is chosen for risk control. A controlled ocean reentry is preferable to allowing the station to decay naturally, because an uncontrolled decay would leave the final location and timing less predictable. Operators can continue making small corrections until the final maneuver, narrowing uncertainty before the station encounters the atmosphere.

Will pieces of the ISS survive reentry?

Some may. Reentry heating and aerodynamic stress should destroy most of the station’s mass, but not every item has the same response. Dense metal components, pressure vessels, propulsion hardware and other heat-resistant parts can retain enough strength to survive part of the descent. NASA therefore plans for a debris footprint rather than assuming total vaporization.

The available modeling supports the expectation that most hardware will burn up or vaporize; it does not establish an exact list or number of surviving fragments. The surviving pieces, if any, are expected to splash down within the unpopulated target area. This is why the final ground-track adjustments and ocean targeting are essential.

Why can’t NASA keep the station in orbit?

The ISS was not designed for easy disassembly

NASA evaluated dismantling the complex and returning its parts to Earth. The station’s modules, truss and connected systems were assembled in orbit for long-duration use, not for a simple end-of-life teardown. Disassembly would require extensive new robotic, crewed and transportation work, while creating many additional opportunities for hardware failures and uncontrolled pieces.

A higher “parking orbit” needs much more velocity

NASA’s 2024 FAQ compares the velocity change required for several options:

Option Published velocity change Qualification
Controlled deorbit 57 m/s NASA figure from its 2024 transition-plan FAQ
Orbit aimed at lasting 100 years 120–140 m/s NASA figure from 2024; depends on the selected orbit and conditions
Orbit lasting more than 10,000 years 760 m/s NASA figure from 2024

These figures show why boosting the entire station to a very high, long-lived orbit is unattractive. It would require substantially more velocity change than a controlled deorbit, along with a vehicle and fuel system capable of moving an enormous, aging structure. A higher orbit would also leave the station as a long-term piece of space debris rather than removing it from orbit.

Natural decay alone gives up control

Simply stopping routine reboosts would eventually allow drag to bring the ISS down, but the final reentry would be less controllable. Atmospheric density changes with solar activity, and small differences in drag accumulate over many months or years. NASA’s selected approach combines natural decay with deliberate lowering and a final targeted maneuver so the risk is managed rather than left to chance.

Why a controlled ocean reentry is the preferred option

  • Risk control: controllers can target an unpopulated ocean region instead of accepting a random land or ocean reentry.
  • Engineering feasibility: the station can be deorbited with far less velocity change than would be needed to place it in a 100-year or greater-than-10,000-year orbit.
  • Structural reality: the ISS was not built for easy disassembly, so taking it apart in orbit would be complex and hazardous.
  • Environmental responsibility: the plan removes the massive structure from orbit instead of leaving it as a long-lived artificial object.

NASA associate administrator Ken Bowersox described the purpose of the USDV selection in June 2024: “Selecting a U.S. Deorbit Vehicle for the International Space Station will help NASA and its international partners ensure a safe and responsible transition in low Earth orbit at the end of station operations.”

How the ISS will be replaced

A shift from one government station to purchased services

NASA intends to move from operating a government-sponsored station to purchasing access from commercially owned and operated low-Earth-orbit destinations. Those facilities are expected to host NASA research, technology demonstrations and human missions, while also serving other customers.

The successor network is not operating yet

NASA announced on October 9, 2026 that it had released a final request for proposals seeking industry plans for the next generation of commercial space stations. That announcement demonstrates that procurement is continuing; it does not establish that a replacement station is already in orbit or that a seamless handoff from the ISS is guaranteed.

The transition therefore has two different confidence levels. The retirement method and the current 2030 operating target are described in NASA’s published plans, while the readiness, schedule and capabilities of successor stations remain dependent on future design, funding, certification, launch and operations decisions.

What the ISS has accomplished before retirement

The station’s end-of-life plan follows an exceptionally large construction effort. NASA says ISS assembly required 27 space shuttle flights, took 13 years and involved 161 spacewalks. Those figures help explain why retirement is not a matter of returning a single spacecraft: the station is a connected orbital complex assembled piece by piece and maintained for decades.

Its retirement also marks a change in how low-Earth-orbit infrastructure is managed. Instead of one multinational government platform serving as the primary destination, NASA’s stated goal is a market of commercial destinations that can provide facilities to NASA and other customers. The practical test will be whether those platforms become available before the ISS is deorbited and can support the research, crew time and logistics that users require.

What is known, and what remains uncertain

Question What NASA’s published material establishes What is not established
When does operation end? The current plan is to operate through 2030. The date cannot be treated as immune to later policy or international decisions.
How will it reenter? Natural drag, deliberate lowering and a final targeted maneuver. The exact date and final footprint years in advance.
Who provides the final vehicle? SpaceX was selected to develop and deliver the USDV; NASA will own and operate it. Completion of the deorbit mission itself.
Will everything burn up? Most hardware is expected to burn up or vaporize. The exact surviving fragments or their number.
What follows the ISS? NASA is pursuing commercially operated low-Earth-orbit destinations. A completed replacement station or guaranteed uninterrupted access.
How much will retirement cost? NASA’s published material provides technical velocity figures and vehicle information. A single authoritative total retirement cost with a clearly defined scope.

What readers should expect during the final phase

  1. ISS crews continue normal missions while the current multinational operating plan remains in force.
  2. NASA and its partners prepare the station and deorbit vehicle for an uncrewed final phase.
  3. The crew departs before the final sequence begins.
  4. Drag and planned propulsion maneuvers lower the orbit and refine the ground track.
  5. A final burn sends the station toward the remote ocean footprint.
  6. The structure fragments in the atmosphere, with most material destroyed and any surviving pieces falling inside the planned area.
  7. Research and crewed activity transition, where available, to commercial low-Earth-orbit facilities.

Why the retirement plan matters beyond the ISS

The operation sets a precedent for ending the lives of very large orbital structures. It combines spacecraft navigation, atmospheric modeling, international coordination, debris-risk management and public safety. A responsible retirement is not merely the final maneuver; it includes years of planning for the crew’s departure, vehicle readiness, targeting uncertainty and the possibility that some hardware will survive reentry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For NASA, the objective is continuity: remove the ISS safely while preserving access to low Earth orbit through a new generation of stations. Whether that transition is smooth will depend on commercial platforms reaching operational readiness and on NASA and its partners maintaining access during the gap between the old station and its successors.
