From October 5, 2026, the service is unsupported and new messages from the widget will no longer be relayed to Teams. This change concerns the website widget—not ordinary one-to-one, group, or meeting chats in Teams.
What is changing with Teams Live chat?
Teams Live chat is a customer-facing website feature: a visitor starts a conversation through an embedded widget, and the message is routed to the organization’s support team in Teams. Microsoft’s retirement notice applies to that service and message path, not to Teams chat as a whole. Microsoft’s retirement and setup guidance says new customers could no longer set up the feature starting August 6, 2026. From October 5, 2026, it is no longer supported and incoming widget chats are no longer relayed to Teams.

If the widget remains embedded after retirement, it will be hidden; customers will not be able to start new conversations, escalations, or interactions through it. Microsoft advises administrators to remove it from their websites before October 5.
Which Teams chats are affected?

In short, the affected route is website visitor → Live chat widget → organization’s Teams support team. Do not interpret this retirement as a shutdown of the Teams app’s regular chat or meeting-chat features.

What should administrators do before October 5?
- Find and remove the widget. Check every customer-facing website for the Teams Live chat embed. Microsoft says to look for the HTML
<script>tag withid="chatbot"and remove it before October 5, 2026. See Microsoft’s removal guidance. - Notify support staff. Tell employees who handle customer conversations through the widget that messages will no longer reach Teams after the cutoff, and direct them to the organization’s chosen replacement workflow.
- Check data-retention needs. Microsoft says the retirement itself will not delete previously created customer data. Existing Teams channels and associated List data remain subject to the tenant’s Microsoft 365 retention and lifecycle policies. Review those policies and export information that must be preserved independently.
- Choose a replacement workflow. Identify what the organization needs from its website conversation channel and evaluate an alternative before the cutoff. Do not assume there is a direct migration or feature-for-feature replacement.
What alternatives does Microsoft name?
Microsoft identifies Dynamics 365 Contact Center with Live Chat and Microsoft Copilot Studio Contact Center AI solutions as options for organizations with customer-support, engagement, or contact-center requirements. Microsoft advises organizations to assess which fits; the retirement notice does not establish that either option is a drop-in replacement.
Compare candidates against the organization’s specific workflow, including website widget requirements, escalation and handoff, agent routing, integration with existing support processes, data-retention needs, and licensing and implementation capacity. Confirm current capabilities, licensing, and availability with Microsoft documentation or the organization’s Microsoft representative before selecting a service.
