When media companies merge, they may combine streaming apps or catalogs, but a change in ownership does not automatically change your app, price, or access to shows. In the current example, Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, and says the companies’ streaming products will eventually unify into one service. It has not announced the final service’s launch date, price, plans, or title availability.
What a media merger can change for streaming subscribers
A merger puts businesses under common ownership. Afterward, the new owner may decide to combine apps, move titles between catalogs, change subscription plans, or keep services separate. Those decisions are not automatic consequences of the deal closing: they depend on the company’s plans, licensing arrangements, and the markets where each service operates.

- One app instead of several: Services may be integrated over time, potentially requiring subscribers to move accounts or use a new app. Details matter: a company’s announcement of an intended combination is not a migration schedule.
- A broader catalog: Combining libraries can make more titles available in one place. It does not guarantee that every title will be included, remain available, or be offered in every country.
- Fewer standalone services: If separate services are combined, subscribers may have fewer independent options. A larger catalog in one app and fewer choices in the market can happen at the same time.
- New prices or plans: The owner may revise prices, tiers, or bundles, but a merger announcement alone does not establish that a price will rise or what the new price will be.
What the Skydance–Warner Bros. Discovery deal means now
The announced plan is one service over time
Skydance announced on October 6, 2026 that it had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The company says its direct-to-consumer streaming products “will unify into a single service over time.” That is the owner’s plan, not confirmation that the apps or subscriptions have already been combined. The closing announcement does not specify a launch date, final price, service tiers, account migration process, or which titles will be available. Skydance’s closing announcement.

The library may grow, but exact availability is unsettled
The combined companies bring together well-known entertainment properties, and a unified catalog could be more convenient for viewers. The actual service lineup will depend on company decisions and licensing, among other factors; no title-by-title list was included in the closing announcement. The Associated Press described the potential for a larger combined catalog alongside concern about fewer platform choices. Associated Press coverage of the completed transaction.

No combined price has been announced
It is reasonable to watch for price and plan changes as services are integrated, but the available announcements do not establish a deal-caused increase or a final combined price. Treat predictions about future cost as concerns, not as a published bill. The Associated Press reported critics’ concern that consolidation could put upward pressure on prices; that concern is not evidence that the acquisition has already raised subscribers’ prices. What regulators decided—and what that does not decide
United States: DOJ conclusion dated June 12, 2026
The U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said on June 12, 2026, after an eight-month investigation that included information from the companies and third parties, that it had concluded the proposed transaction was not likely to harm competition or U.S. consumers in subscription video on demand, linear television, or theatrical film development, production, or distribution. This is the DOJ’s conclusion for its review, not a promise of stable prices, catalogs, or a particular subscriber experience. DOJ statement.

United Kingdom: CMA clearance dated August 6, 2026
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s case record says it launched its merger inquiry on June 9, 2026 and cleared the anticipated acquisition on August 6, 2026. That is the UK agency’s decision in its jurisdiction; it should not be confused with the separate U.S. review or read as a forecast of how the service will operate. CMA merger inquiry record.
How to interpret the reported streaming-market share
The Associated Press, citing streaming guide JustWatch, reported in 2026 that Paramount+ and HBO Max together represented roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market. AP compared that estimate with Disney+ and with Amazon Prime Video at 17% and Netflix at 19%. These are market-share estimates as reported by AP, not subscriber counts or an official regulator measurement. The percentage describes a reported market estimate, not the share of all viewers or households. Associated Press report.

What subscribers should check before changing plans
Until the owner publishes specific migration and pricing terms, avoid cancelling or switching based only on predictions. When details arrive, check the items that affect your own account:
- Service and app: Is there a confirmed date when an existing app will change or stop working?
- Account and billing: Will your login, billing provider, renewal date, or current subscription transfer automatically, or will you need to take action?
- Price and plan: What is the recurring price, which features or tiers are included, and does your current plan continue?
- Titles and location: Are the shows and films you watch actually included in the new service in your country?
- Standalone choice: Can you still subscribe to either service separately, or is access available only through a combined service or bundle?
For this transaction, those final consumer details have not been specified in the October 6, 2026 closing announcement. Warner Bros. Discovery’s filing documents an earlier Netflix agreement that it terminated after a superior proposal and its February 27, 2026 agreement to sell to Paramount Skydance. That history explains why older coverage may describe a Netflix scenario; the completed Skydance acquisition is the current status. Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2025 Form 10-K filed with the SEC in 2026.
