The developer decides whether to leave a demo available, deactivate it immediately, or remove it later. Steam recommends that developers keep demos up beyond the event when it fits their release plans and announce any planned shutdown.
Save-file continuity is a separate decision. A demo can remain playable without sharing progress with the full game, while a deactivated demo may still transfer progress if its files were configured for Steam Cloud sharing. The only reliable answer for a particular game comes from its developer’s settings and announcements.

The festival ending is not an automatic demo shutdown
Next Fest is a promotional event window, not a license that expires for every demo at the same moment. Steam’s official Next Fest guidance says the developer chooses the post-event duration and encourages leaving the demo available after the festival. It also asks developers to tell players if they plan to deactivate it because many people expect to play downloaded demos after the event. The guidance is documented in the Steamworks Next Fest FAQ.

That means the event’s end date and a demo’s removal date can be different. One developer may leave a demo on the store for months; another may disable it soon after the event; a third may announce a specific deadline and remove it then. Steam does not publish one universal retention period for all Next Fest demos.

Who controls availability?
The developer or publisher controls the demo’s Steamworks configuration. Steamworks includes a control to deactivate or reactivate a demo, so deactivation is an explicit product decision rather than an automatic event-triggered action. A store page can therefore remain accessible after Next Fest, even though the festival itself has finished. The demo setup and deactivation behavior are described in Steam’s demo documentation.
What status might you encounter?
| Demo status | What it means for a player | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Still available | The demo remains downloadable and launchable through Steam. | Look for a developer notice explaining how long it is expected to remain live. |
| Scheduled for deactivation | The developer has announced a cutoff, but access may continue until that date. | Prioritize playing before the stated deadline; announcements can contain exceptions or platform details. |
| Deactivated on Steam | New downloads or normal Steam launching may be blocked, depending on the configuration. | Read the developer’s announcement and the demo’s current store status. |
| Installed locally but deactivated | The local executable may not behave exactly like the Steam store listing. | Whether it launches can depend on how the demo was built and whether it checks for a current Steam license. |
Steam notes that disabling a demo does not necessarily prevent every local launch. A build may still start outside Steam unless it requires Steam and verifies a current license. That is a technical consequence of the game’s implementation, not a promise that a deactivated demo will remain usable. Do not treat an executable that happens to launch as proof that online services, achievements, Cloud synchronization, or support will continue.
How to find out whether a specific demo will stay up
Steam’s platform policy cannot tell you the schedule for an individual game. Use the game’s own communications and status instead.

- Open the demo’s store page. Read the description, recent announcements, and any banner or home-screen message. Steamworks tips specifically recommend telling players on the demo home screen if and when it will be deactivated.
- Check the developer’s Steam announcements. Search for terms such as “demo,” “Next Fest,” “deactivation,” “last chance,” or “available after the event.” A dated announcement is stronger evidence than an undated statement that the demo is temporary.
- Check the demo’s title screen after installing it. Developers may display the planned shutdown date there even when the store description is unchanged. Record the date if one is shown; announcements can be edited, while a local notice may remain visible until the build is replaced.
- Keep the demo installed if you still intend to play it. Removing it before checking the developer’s schedule creates an unnecessary download problem if the store listing later disappears.
- If no date is published, treat availability as undecided. The absence of a shutdown notice does not create a guarantee. It means only that no public cutoff has been communicated in the places you checked.
Steam’s advice is unusually direct: “While it’s up to you to decide what works best for your release strategy, we encourage you to consider leaving your demo up beyond the conclusion of the Steam Next Fest you joined. Many players have expressed disappointment when demos disappear immediately, so communicate to players if you plan to deactivate your demo so they can prioritize playing it accordingly.” This is guidance to developers, not a contractual promise to players.
What deactivation changes—and what it may not change
When a developer deactivates a demo, Steam can stop presenting it as an ordinary downloadable product or prevent the usual launch path. The exact result depends on the demo’s app configuration and its license checks. Steam’s documentation cautions that a disabled demo may still launch locally in some circumstances, particularly when the program does not require Steam or does not verify a current license.
This distinction explains why two players can report different results after a shutdown. One may see a missing install or launch button in Steam; another may still open files already stored on a computer. Neither experience establishes a general rule for all games. A local launch can also lack the services the developer relied on, including Steam Cloud synchronization or online features.

If a deactivated build will not start, there is no platform setting that can restore it. The practical options are to follow the developer’s announcement, watch for a reactivation, or wait for the full game. Avoid downloading unofficial replacement executables: they can be altered, unsupported, or unsafe, and they do not recreate the developer’s Steam license configuration.

Sometimes, but not automatically. Steamworks provides a Shared cloud APP ID setting that lets a developer share Steam Cloud storage between two app IDs. Steam says this is most commonly used to share saved games between a demo and its full game. The demo and the full release normally have separate app IDs, so the developer must deliberately connect them through the Cloud configuration.
Even with shared storage enabled, the handoff depends on the game’s save implementation and Cloud file configuration. Steam’s documentation describes a capability, not a universal guarantee that every demo’s progress will appear in every full release. The user’s Steam Cloud settings also have to permit synchronization.

| Configuration | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Demo and full game share a configured Cloud app ID, and the relevant save files are included in Cloud synchronization | Progress can be available to the full game when it reads the shared files. |
| The developer did not configure shared storage | Steam has no documented automatic demo-to-full-game handoff. |
| Cloud is disabled for the account, device, or game | Cloud cannot move the save between installations; any transfer would require a method the developer supports separately. |
| The demo stores progress outside the configured Cloud files | The save may remain local and may not be visible to the full game. |
| The full game uses a different save format or does not look for the demo’s files | Shared storage alone does not make the progress readable. |
The festival’s end has no direct bearing on this setup. A demo can be live but unable to transfer saves, or it can be deactivated after its Cloud files have already synchronized and still provide the full game with the data it was designed to read.

These steps reduce avoidable loss, but they cannot create a transfer path that the developer did not implement.

- Finish a normal save cycle. Save from the game’s own menu, return to its title screen if the game uses an automatic-save system, and exit normally. Abruptly killing the process can leave the newest state unsynchronized.
- Allow Steam Cloud to finish. Keep Steam online and wait for the game’s synchronization to complete before shutting down or switching devices. If Steam reports a conflict, do not choose an option that overwrites the newer file until you know which copy contains your latest progress.
- Confirm Cloud is enabled. In the Steam client, review the Cloud setting in Steam Settings and the game’s Properties page. Labels can change between client versions, but the relevant control is the per-account or per-game Steam Cloud option.
- Keep the local installation until the full game is available. Uninstalling does not necessarily delete a Cloud copy, but retaining the installation preserves a local fallback if the game supports one and gives you time to verify synchronization.
- Use the same Steam account for the full game. Cloud data is associated with the account and app configuration that created it. Installing the full release under another account will not make the original account’s save appear.
- Launch the full game once and inspect its load menu. If the developer built an import prompt, follow it. Otherwise, look for the expected profile, chapter, unlock, or checkpoint rather than assuming that a file with a familiar name proves the transfer worked.
Steam Cloud’s underlying requirements and shared-app-ID option are documented in Steamworks Steam Cloud documentation. That page explains the platform feature; the developer remains responsible for selecting files and writing the code that consumes them.

If your demo progress does not appear
First, separate a synchronization problem from an unsupported transfer
Check whether the demo actually completed a Cloud sync and whether Cloud is enabled for both products. If the demo never synchronized, the full game cannot retrieve the newest state from Steam. If synchronization completed but no progress appears, the more likely explanation is that shared storage was not configured, the relevant files were excluded, or the full game does not import that save format.
Do not delete the old files while investigating
Keep the demo installed and avoid deleting local save folders until the developer confirms the supported transfer procedure. If Steam presents a Cloud conflict, preserve both copies where possible and note their timestamps before selecting a replacement. Deleting files first can remove the only copy that contains your progress.
Look for a developer-specific import instruction
Some games explain transfer behavior in the demo’s announcements, FAQ, or full-game launch notes. Follow those instructions rather than copying files into arbitrary folders. A manual copy is safe only when the developer documents the source and destination and confirms that the formats match.
Contact the developer with useful details
Report the demo and full-game versions, your operating system, whether Steam Cloud showed a completed sync, and the exact point at which the save disappeared. Those details help the developer determine whether the issue is account-specific, a Cloud configuration problem, or an unsupported handoff. Steam cannot force a developer’s app IDs to share data if the developer did not configure them to do so.
What the post-festival wrap-up page means
Steam says a wrap-up event page featuring games with the most-played demos launches shortly after Next Fest concludes. That page is a recap of festival activity. It does not serve as a catalog of demos that remain playable, and appearing—or not appearing—on the wrap-up does not determine whether a developer keeps a demo live.
Use the demo’s store status and the developer’s own notice for availability. Use the game’s Cloud configuration and transfer instructions for save continuity. Treat those as two independent questions, because Steam’s event recap does not answer either one for a particular title.
