Steam Next Fest demos do not automatically disappear when the event ends. Valve leaves availability to each developer. A demo may remain downloadable and playable, or the developer may deactivate it. If deactivated, Steam blocks new downloads and launching, even for people who installed it earlier; the demo can still appear in those users’ libraries and may be reactivated later.
There is no automatic Next Fest takedown
Steam Next Fest is a time-limited promotion, but the demos shown during it are not subject to a universal expiry rule. Valve’s Steamworks guidance makes the post-event decision a developer choice rather than an automatic Steam action.

Valve says: “While it’s up to you to decide what works best for your release strategy, we encourage you to consider leaving your demo up beyond the conclusion of the Steam Next Fest you joined. Many players have expressed disappointment when demos disappear immediately, so communicate to players if you plan to deactivate your demo so they can prioritize playing it accordingly.” This wording appears in Valve’s Steam Next Fest — Steamworks Documentation, current as of October 18, 2026.

That means two games featured in the same festival can have different outcomes. One developer can leave its build live for months; another can turn access off as soon as the event ends. The event ending does not itself tell Steam to remove every demo.

What can happen to a demo after the festival?
The developer leaves it active
An active demo continues to behave like a normal Steam demo. Players can find its store listing, download it, and launch it, subject to the game’s own requirements and any regional or account restrictions shown on Steam. A developer might keep the exact festival build available, update the demo, or leave it online while preparing a newer version.
The developer deactivates it
Deactivation is the significant change. Steamworks states that deactivating a demo prevents players from downloading or launching it. This applies to people who never installed it and to people who downloaded it during Next Fest.
The deactivated entry is not necessarily erased from every account. Players who already have the demo in their Steam library continue to see it, so they can uninstall the local files. The library listing does not preserve play access: Steam will not launch the deactivated demo through the client.
The developer reactivates it later
Deactivation is reversible. Steamworks provides a reactivation control, allowing the developer to restore the demo’s access later. Reactivation is a developer decision, not an automatic countdown or promise that every disabled demo will return.
Live versus deactivated: the practical difference

What happens to a demo you downloaded during Next Fest?
Downloading during the event gives you local files and an account association, but it is not a guarantee of future playability. If the developer later deactivates the demo, Steam can stop the client from launching it. The files may remain on your drive until you uninstall them, while the library entry remains visible.
For that reason, “I installed it” and “I can play it after Next Fest” are different situations. The controlling event is the demo’s current Steam availability, not whether the files were downloaded before the festival ended.
Steam’s normal client behavior is the relevant expectation. Steamworks notes a technical edge case: a disabled demo might still launch outside Steam if it does not require Steam and does not check for a current license. That is not the normal in-client behavior, is not guaranteed for a particular game, and does not restore the demo’s Steam availability. Players should not rely on bypassing the client as a supported way to continue playing.
What players should do before a demo disappears
Play the important parts while the event is running
If a demo matters to your decision, play it during Next Fest or soon afterward. Valve specifically warns that players are disappointed when demos disappear immediately and asks developers to communicate planned deactivation. A public announcement can help, but it is not a guarantee that a demo will remain available until a particular hour unless the developer states and honors that schedule.
Add the full game to your wishlist
Use the demo’s link to the full game’s Steam store page and add the upcoming game to your wishlist while the demo is visible. Steam’s demo documentation describes links from a demo to the full game, including a prominent library link. A wishlist preserves your interest in the commercial release even if the demo later becomes unavailable; it does not preserve demo access.

Check the developer’s channels for a takedown notice
Look at the demo’s store description, the developer’s Steam announcements, and any official community post for a stated removal date or explanation. Valve encourages developers to tell players if they plan to deactivate a demo so people can prioritize playing it. The absence of an announcement should not be interpreted as a promise that the demo will stay live.
Do not treat local backups as an official solution
Copying files or attempting to start an executable outside Steam can fail because the game may require Steam authentication, updates, or license checks. Even where a technically independent build starts, it may not receive fixes and is outside the normal access behavior documented by Steamworks.
Why developers deactivate a festival build
Next Fest demos are often event builds rather than permanent products. A developer may want to replace an old slice with a substantially changed version, avoid confusing players with outdated mechanics, or stop supporting a build while concentrating on the full game. Deactivation gives the team control over which public version represents the project.
Steamworks supports a reversible workflow: release the demo for the event, deactivate it for a limited-time campaign, and reactivate it later if the team decides the build is still useful. The documentation does not require a developer to choose one policy for every event or every game.
Deactivation is different from removing the demo button
Steamworks documents two separate actions that are easy to confuse. A developer can remove the demo button or link from the full game’s store page. That changes how shoppers discover the demo from the main store listing, but it does not itself disable the demo.

Deactivation is the action that blocks downloading and launching. Therefore, a demo can be hidden from the full game’s page yet remain accessible through its own listing, or it can remain linked on the page while access is otherwise controlled. The store-page button and the demo’s active status should be treated as separate settings.

The demo page still offers an install or play control
This generally indicates that the demo remains active for your account and region. Install or launch it promptly if you want to evaluate it; an active page is not a promise of permanent availability.
The demo is listed in your library but cannot launch
This matches Steamworks’ documented deactivation behavior. The library record can remain so you can identify and uninstall the demo, while Steam prevents launching it. Reinstalling the same entry will not restore access while the demo is deactivated.
The demo page is difficult to find
The developer may have removed the demo button from the full game’s store page, changed its store presentation, or deactivated it. Check the developer’s announcement and search Steam for the demo’s own listing rather than assuming that a missing button proves removal.

After Next Fest, Steam publishes a Wrap-up page featuring games with the most-played demos from that edition. This is a recap of player activity, not a guarantee that every featured demo remains playable. A game can appear in the recap even if its developer later deactivates the demo.
Typical timelines and scenarios
Immediate deactivation
The developer turns the demo off as the festival ends. New players cannot install it, and existing owners cannot launch it through Steam. Existing library records remain visible, and the developer may announce the decision before or after the event.
Short extension
The developer keeps the demo live for days or weeks so players who missed a session can try it. The extension can end without a universal Steam warning, so players should watch official announcements and play before any stated deadline.
Long-term availability
The demo remains on Steam while development continues. The developer may patch it, replace its content, or eventually deactivate it. “Still available today” describes its current status, not a permanent guarantee.

Later reactivation
A previously disabled demo returns when the developer uses Steamworks’ reactivation control. The return may be temporary or indefinite, and the documentation does not promise that the restored build will be identical to the festival version.
What this means for release planning
For players, the safest assumption is practical rather than absolute: treat a Next Fest demo as time-sensitive until the developer clearly says otherwise. Play it while available, wishlist the full game, and check announcements for a takedown date.
For developers, Valve’s stated preference is to consider leaving the demo live beyond the event and to communicate if deactivation is planned. Steamworks gives the team the controls to deactivate and reactivate access, while store-page presentation can be managed separately. Those controls let a studio balance continued discovery against the risk of leaving an outdated event build public.
Bottom line
Some Steam Next Fest demos remain playable after the event; others are deactivated. Steam does not automatically remove every demo. Deactivation blocks downloading and launching, even for prior installers, although the demo can remain visible in existing libraries. Because developers can reactivate a disabled demo, access may return, but no schedule is guaranteed. If you want to play a particular demo, do it during Next Fest or soon after and save the full game to your wishlist.
