Depending on their size, moisture, cleanliness, local markets and available facilities, they may become particleboard or fibre products, pulp and paper feedstock, pellets or briquettes, or fuel for a mill’s own heat, steam and electricity. Some specified virgin-timber residues can enter regulated composting systems. Material may also be discarded or burned in open fires where recovery options are unavailable.
The important distinction is that “wood-processing waste” covers very different materials. Clean sawdust from untreated timber is not equivalent to painted dust, preservative-treated offcuts, bark, wet chips or mixed demolition wood. Each has different technical, commercial and legal options.

What counts as wood-processing waste?
Woodworking and sawmilling leave behind a range of residues rather than a single waste stream. Their form determines how easily they can be handled and what products can be made from them.
Sawdust and planer shavings
Sawdust consists of fine particles created by sawing, sanding or machining. Planer shavings are larger, curled pieces produced when boards are dressed. Both can be used as fibre feedstock, but their moisture content, particle size and contamination matter. Fine, dry material is easier to move through pneumatic systems and to blend into panels; wet or contaminated material is harder to store and market.

Chips, bark, slabs and offcuts
Chips are larger pieces generated by chipping logs, slabs or edging boards. Bark separates during debarking, while slabs and offcuts are solid pieces removed when lumber is sized. These residues can be suitable for pulp, panels or energy, but they are not interchangeable with sawdust. Bark often contains more dirt and minerals, and large pieces may need additional grinding or chipping before a manufacturer can use them.
| Residue | Typical characteristic | Potential outlets | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sawdust | Fine particles; moisture varies | Particleboard, fibre products, pellets, mill fuel | Dust handling, moisture and contamination |
| Planer shavings | Light, curled particles | Particleboard and other fibre products, fuel | Low bulk density and transport cost |
| Wood chips | Coarser, relatively uniform pieces | Pulp and paper, panels, boilers | Required chip size and bark content |
| Bark | Outer tree layer; often dirtier | Boiler fuel, selected panel or horticultural markets | Ash and mineral content |
| Slabs and offcuts | Solid pieces of varying dimensions | Chipping, panel fibre, direct fuel | May need processing before use |
Where the material goes
Five broad pathways account for most documented uses. A mill can use more than one route at the same time, and the highest-value outlet is not always available nearby.
| Pathway | What happens | When it is practical |
|---|---|---|
| New wood products | Residues are screened, sized and blended into particleboard, fibreboard or related products; some forms can supply pulp and paper. | A panel or pulp plant is within economical transport distance and the residue meets its specifications. |
| Onsite energy | Mill residues are burned in boilers or energy systems to make process heat, steam or electricity. | The mill has suitable equipment and a steady residue stream. |
| Pellets and briquettes | Prepared residues are compressed into denser fuel for industrial users, generators or some household-heating markets. | There is a pellet or briquette plant, a buyer and enough dry feedstock. |
| Regulated composting | Eligible virgin-timber sawdust, shavings or cuttings are accepted by a covered composting operation. | Local rules allow the specific input and the operator meets the required conditions. |
| Disposal or open burning | Material is discarded or burned in open fires or rustic ovens where recovery routes are absent. | Usually a fallback, with air-quality and health concerns for open burning. |
How residues become new wood products
Particleboard and fibreboard
The Food and Agriculture Organization identifies sawdust as an input for particleboard and notes that planer shavings are suitable for particleboard production. In a panel plant, particles are prepared to a controlled size, combined with a binder and pressed into boards. Fibreboard uses wood fibres rather than simply preserving the original shape of a shaving or chip. The result is a manufactured board that can replace some solid-wood components in furniture, cabinetry and construction applications.

Pulp and paper
Coarser residues and other wood forms can supply pulp and paper manufacturing. They are processed into fibres, so the plant’s specifications and preparation equipment determine whether a particular chip, slab or residue is accepted. Local demand is decisive: a region with a nearby pulp mill may value chips differently from a region where only a biomass boiler is available.
Why mills burn their own residues
Wood-product and paper manufacturers commonly use lumber-mill and paper-mill waste to produce steam and electricity for their operations. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that this reduces the amount of other fuel and purchased electricity a facility needs. A sawmill therefore may consume a substantial share of its residues onsite instead of shipping them elsewhere.
“They use lumber mill and paper mill waste to produce steam and electricity, which saves money because it reduces the amount of other fuels and electricity they must purchase to operate their facilities.”

Energy use competes with material uses. If a clean residue can be sold to a panel or pulp manufacturer at a favorable value, sending it to a boiler may not be the best commercial choice. Conversely, a remote mill with no nearby panel plant may save more by using the material onsite than by paying to transport it.

Pellets, briquettes and other fuel products
The FAO describes direct sales of residues or their conversion into pellets and briquettes for industrial users and electricity generators. Compression increases bulk density, making a loose stream of sawdust or shavings easier to store, handle and transport. Producers still need suitable moisture, consistent particle quality and equipment capable of preparing the feedstock.
The EIA lists pellets among fuels used for residential heating in the United States. That establishes pellets as a household-heating product, not that every retail pellet bag comes from sawdust supplied by a particular mill. Feedstock can vary by producer and region.
ABARES modeled a future Australian scenario in which 796,000 tonnes of sawmill residues—14% of all Australian sawmill residues—could be potentially usable for wood-pellet production in 2050. This is a conditional projection, not a measurement of current pellet output. The estimate depends on factors such as prices, collection systems and processing capacity.

Virgin timber versus treated or contaminated wood
Virgin-timber residues have not been painted, stained, pressure-treated, laminated or otherwise contaminated. The cited English rules do not establish that treated, painted, glued, contaminated or mixed wood is suitable or permitted for composting. Such material should not be represented as compostable merely because it looks like sawdust.
Why local rules matter
Composting eligibility depends on the jurisdiction, the facility’s permit and the input list it follows. A business should identify the wood species and treatment history, keep clean residues separate and ask the receiving operator whether that exact material is accepted. Household or small-scale composting guidance may differ from rules governing licensed commercial facilities.

FAO reporting notes that in some countries residues are discarded or used as fuel in open fires or rustic ovens. Open burning can create air pollution and health problems, especially when material contains coatings, preservatives or other contaminants. It is not equivalent to controlled combustion in a properly equipped industrial energy system.

There is no current, universal percentage showing how much sawdust or wood-processing waste is recycled, burned for energy or discarded. UNECE and FAO note that recovered-wood data are difficult to obtain and may not be distinguishable in general waste statistics. The destination therefore varies by country, industry and local infrastructure.

How to interpret the available statistics
Several figures are useful only when their scope is kept intact.
| Figure | Scope and date | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 2% | United States; 2025 energy data, preliminary, reported by EIA in 2026 | Wood and wood waste supplied about 2% of total U.S. energy consumption. The category includes bark, sawdust, wood chips, wood scrap and paper-mill residues. | It is not the share of U.S. sawdust that was reused or burned. |
| About 68% | United States; 2025 preliminary data | Industrial users accounted for about 68% of U.S. wood-and-wood-waste energy consumption. | It is not a recycling rate for mills or households. |
| 50.9% | 31 reporting countries; UNECE/FAO statistic reported in 2020 | Just over half of wood fibres used for energy generation came from indirect sources, mainly forest-industry by-products and residues. | It is not a current global disposal, recovery or recycling percentage. |
| 796,000 tonnes, or 14% | Australia; ABARES modeled 2050 projection | The estimated quantity of sawmill residues potentially usable for pellet production under specified future conditions. | It is not observed 2026 production or a guaranteed supply. |
How a business decides the best route
Facilities usually compare technical suitability with economics and regulation. The following sequence helps explain why two mills with similar-looking piles may choose different destinations.
- Identify the residue. Record whether it is sawdust, shavings, chips, bark, slabs or mixed material, and note the timber species and particle size.
- Check treatment and contamination. Separate virgin timber from painted, glued, laminated, preservative-treated or otherwise contaminated wood. Do not mix streams before a buyer or regulator has approved them.
- Measure practical quality. Moisture, dirt, bark content and consistency affect panel, pulp, pellet and boiler specifications.
- Map nearby facilities. Contact panel and pulp plants, pellet or briquette producers, biomass-energy operators and licensed composting facilities in economical transport range.
- Compare value with transport. FAO cautions that alternative markets and sale value affect whether residues are available as fuel. A theoretically valuable outlet can become uneconomic when hauling distances are long.
- Confirm legal eligibility. Check air-emissions, waste-handling and composting rules for the jurisdiction. Acceptance by one facility does not make a material legal everywhere.
- Keep records. Document quantities, destination, treatment status and any acceptance conditions so that unsuitable material does not enter a product or compost stream.
What readers should take away
Sawdust is not automatically rubbish and it is not automatically a fuel. Clean, consistent residues may remain in the wood-products economy as panel or pulp feedstock; mills may consume them for steam and electricity; processors may densify them into pellets or briquettes; and specified virgin-timber residues may be accepted by regulated composting operations. Material that is mixed, contaminated, too wet, too remote from buyers or outside local rules may instead be discarded or burned.

The destination is determined by residue type and quality, competing material and energy values, local demand, transport costs, available equipment and regulation. Statistics about wood-and-wood-waste energy use describe energy consumption, not the fate of all sawdust, so no single percentage can answer the question for every country or mill.
