A Skill is a reusable prompt and set of instructions, so deletion removes the saved item from the user-facing Skills list. Google does not document whether that action immediately erases every server-side copy, backup, log, or conversation from which the Skill was created. It also does not say that deleting a Skill automatically deletes Gemini Apps activity or Chrome browsing data.
The safe interpretation is limited but useful: delete the Skill in Chrome, then separately review Gemini Apps Activity if you want to manage conversations or related activity. Treat those as separate controls, not as one deletion request.

What a Chrome AI Skill stores
Chrome Skills are saved prompts that you can reuse with Gemini in Chrome. When you run one, Gemini reads the active browser tab and applies the Skill’s saved instructions to that page. The Skill is therefore more than a bookmark or browser-history entry: it is a stored instruction that you supplied to Gemini for repeated use.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice lists instructions supplied in Skills, along with instructions in other Gemini features, as information users provide to Gemini Apps. That establishes that the prompt and instructions are treated as data provided to the service. It does not, by itself, define how long every copy is retained after a user deletes the Skill.

Chrome Skills and Gemini Apps Skills are different interfaces
Google also has a separate Skills feature in Gemini Apps. Its help page describes Skills as saved custom instructions that can be used across chats and tasks, with a rollout limited to the Gemini mobile app, Mac app, and web app at the time of the documentation. That is not the same interface as Chrome Skills. For a Chrome user, use Chrome’s own Skills page and its Browse Skills menu rather than assuming that a Gemini Apps chat or task page controls the Chrome copy.
Who can use Chrome Skills
Google lists these conditions for Chrome Skills:
- A Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer.
- The latest Chrome version.
- Gemini in Chrome enabled.
- A personal Google Account.
- English (United States) as the supported language setting.
- A supported region and age.
The feature is rolling out gradually. Managed or Enterprise accounts cannot use it unless an administrator enables it. Availability, eligibility rules, and labels can change as the rollout expands, so a missing Skills option does not necessarily mean the feature was removed.
How to delete a Chrome AI Skill
Use the Chrome Skills manager, not a browser-history menu:
- Open Ask Gemini in Chrome.
- Type
/in the prompt box. - Choose Browse Skills.
- Find the Skill you want to remove.
- Open More for that Skill and select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion if Chrome presents a confirmation prompt.
You can also go directly to chrome://skills/yourSkills in Chrome and manage the saved Skills there. Google’s Gemini Skills help states: “If you delete a skill, it can’t be undone.” Save or copy any instruction you may need before confirming, because the documented deletion control has no restore operation.

If the menu is missing
- Update Chrome and reopen Ask Gemini.
- Check that Gemini in Chrome is enabled and that you are signed in with a personal Google Account.
- Verify that your language, region, and age meet the current eligibility rules.
- If the account is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator whether Gemini in Chrome and Skills are enabled.
- Remember that the feature is still rolling out; the absence of Browse Skills can reflect availability rather than a deletion problem.
What deletion definitely changes
The saved Skill is removed through the Skills manager and can no longer be selected from that manager. The deletion is irreversible according to Google’s help. This is the clear, user-facing result documented by Google.
Google’s public Chrome Skills instructions do not specify the technical scope of that deletion. They do not say whether every copy of the prompt is removed immediately from servers, backups, logs, or other systems. They also do not say whether deleting a Skill removes the source conversation in which you created or described it. Consequently, you should not interpret the button as a documented guarantee of instant, universal erasure.
Does Google still have the prompt?
The official material does not answer that question for a deleted Chrome Skill. Google identifies Skill instructions as information provided to Gemini Apps, but the Chrome deletion instructions do not publish a retention schedule or a statement that all retained copies disappear at the moment of deletion. The most accurate answer is therefore: the Skill is deleted from the Chrome Skills control, while retention of every related copy is not established publicly.

There is no Chrome Skills statement that a Skill deletion also deletes a prior chat. A conversation and a saved Skill are separate objects in the user interface. If the prompt appears in a conversation, manage that conversation through Gemini’s activity controls as a separate step rather than assuming the Skill button removes it.

Three deletion controls that should not be confused
Google documents separate controls for Skills, Gemini Apps activity, and Chrome browsing data. Their documented purposes are different:

The table’s retention qualification for reviewed chats is a general Gemini Apps activity statement, not a published retention period for a deleted Chrome Skill. Likewise, Chrome browsing-data deletion should not be used as a substitute for the Skills manager.
How to review related Gemini activity
If your concern is the conversation that contained the prompt, or other records of using Gemini, open Gemini Apps Activity and review the entries there. Google provides controls to review and delete that activity. Use the activity interface to address chats and activity records; use chrome://skills/yourSkills to remove the saved Chrome Skill.

Google’s privacy information says some chats may be reviewed by human reviewers and that related data may be retained for up to three years. That statement applies to the general Gemini activity process described by Google. It is not a promise that a deleted Skill remains for three years, nor is it evidence that a deleted Skill is erased immediately. It is a reason to keep the two controls conceptually separate and to delete the activity entries you no longer want retained.

A practical privacy sequence
- Delete the Skill in Chrome’s Skills manager.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity and look for the conversation or activity associated with the prompt.
- Delete any activity entries you want removed through that activity control.
- Review Chrome browsing data separately if your goal also includes clearing local browser history or other browser records.
- Do not rely on any one of these steps as a guarantee that all copies in every Google system have been erased; Google’s public Chrome Skills help does not make that guarantee.
Why Chrome browsing-data deletion is a separate issue
A Skill is an account-linked Gemini feature, while Chrome browsing-data settings govern browser data. Google explicitly distinguishes Google Account activity from browsing data. Clearing history, cookies, cache, or other local browser records therefore should not be described as deleting a saved Skill. Conversely, deleting a Skill should not be described as clearing the page history that may have been created while you used it.
If you used a Skill on sensitive pages, consider both surfaces: remove the saved instruction in Chrome, then review Gemini activity and the browser data categories relevant to your situation. Each action addresses a different record.
What the enterprise retention figures do—and do not—mean
Google’s Chrome Enterprise guidance, last updated in April 2025, says customer data collected by Chrome AI tools is generally stored for 28 days or less and that Chrome may take up to 180 days to fully remove account-tied customer data from all systems. Those figures are broad enterprise guidance. They are not a personal Chrome Skill deletion timeline, and they should not be used to promise that a deleted Skill will be retained for, or erased within, either period.
For a personal Chrome Skill, the public documentation reviewed gives no equivalent service-level deletion deadline. The only firm user-facing statements are that the Skill can be deleted from the manager and that the action cannot be undone.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Deleting only the chat
Removing a conversation does not document that the saved Skill itself is removed. Check the Skills manager directly.
Clearing Chrome history and stopping there
Browser history controls are separate from Google Account activity and Skills. Use the Skills manager and, if appropriate, Gemini Apps Activity as well.
Assuming the word “delete” means immediate global erasure
The interface confirms removal of the saved Skill, but Google does not describe deletion of every backup, log, or related conversation. Avoid making a stronger claim than the documentation supports.

Google says deletion cannot be undone. Preserve the text of a useful prompt before removing it if you may need to recreate the Skill later.
The bottom line for privacy-conscious users
Delete a Chrome AI Skill from Ask Gemini by choosing /, Browse Skills, then More > Delete, or open chrome://skills/yourSkills. The saved Skill disappears from the manager and cannot be restored through the documented control. That does not establish that Google has instantly erased every retained copy or the chat where the Skill was created. Manage Gemini Apps Activity and Chrome browsing data separately, and treat Google’s enterprise retention figures as general enterprise guidance rather than a personal deletion promise.
