What Happens to Roku Devices, Updates, and Privacy After Fox’s Acquisition?

Short answer: Nothing changes for Roku owners yet. Fox’s acquisition of Roku has been announced but is not expected to close until the first half of calendar year 2027, subject to customary conditions and approvals. Until closing, Roku and Fox remain separate companies. Roku says the current experience, top apps, home screen and features are unchanged, and Roku continues to release software updates. The published Roku privacy policy also remains the applicable policy as of October 18, 2026.

After closing, Roku is expected to keep its name and operate as an open, partner-friendly streaming platform. However, no final post-close privacy wording, advertising policy, organizational structure, update schedule or home-screen placement plan has been published. Those details matter more than the announcement itself, so owners should distinguish confirmed continuity from decisions that Fox and Roku have not yet made public.

Where the acquisition stands right now

Roku and Fox have announced a transaction, but it is still pending. Both companies describe the expected closing window as the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and approvals. That is a target period, not a guaranteed date. Until the transaction legally closes, Roku controls its products, software releases, customer support and privacy notices as it does today.

Roku’s customer announcement on June 15, 2026, says, "The experience you know and love isn’t changing." It specifically promises continued access to major apps, free entertainment, the existing user experience and the ability to explore television content. That statement describes the period while the deal proceeds; it is not a detailed blueprint for every decision after closing.

What is unchanged during the pending deal

  • Your existing player or Roku TV should continue to start, stream and access supported channels normally.
  • The Roku home screen and current feature set remain in place.
  • Roku, rather than Fox, remains responsible for operating the service before closing.
  • Software and security updates continue to be distributed.
  • The Roku privacy policy dated July 1, 2026, remains the published policy.

Why the closing date matters

Ownership changes legally at closing, not when an announcement is issued. Regulatory review, shareholder or corporate approvals and other customary conditions can affect timing or outcome. Neither company has published a final closing date, and the available communications do not establish whether any conditions will extend beyond the first half of 2027. Treat that window as an estimate until a definitive closing notice appears.

Will your Roku device keep working?

There is no announced requirement to replace a Roku device because of the acquisition. Roku’s current customer guidance says the present experience remains the same while the transaction is pending. A Roku player, Roku TV model or supported mobile application should therefore continue to work under the same compatibility and account requirements that applied before the announcement.

What could stop a device from working

Normal causes still apply: an unsupported legacy model, a failed network connection, an expired channel app, a damaged remote, an account problem or a television-input issue. None of those is evidence that Fox has disabled a device. If a player is already outside its normal software-support period, the acquisition does not restore compatibility; check Roku’s model-specific support information before replacing hardware.

Do you need a new Roku?

No. Do not buy a replacement solely because Fox is acquiring Roku. Replace hardware only for an ordinary reason such as failing components, a model that no longer receives required software, inadequate streaming performance or a need for a different resolution, wireless standard or accessibility feature. A new device bought before closing will still be governed by the software and privacy terms in force when you use it, and those terms can change later through an updated notice.

Updates, security fixes and Roku OS

Roku continues to publish software releases. Its support history lists Roku OS 15.3 as released on August 6, 2026. The same history records earlier releases that included Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) fixes. Roku says its automatic software updates are designed to make it easy for products to receive the latest security and privacy features.

How updates normally arrive

  1. Connect the Roku device to the internet and leave it powered or in its normal standby state.
  2. Keep automatic updating enabled; Roku distributes updates through the device’s software-update system.
  3. To check manually, open the Roku settings menu, choose System, then Software update, and select Check now (wording can vary slightly by Roku TV manufacturer and software version).
  4. Allow the device to download and install the update. Do not unplug it during the installation or restart process.
  5. Afterward, reopen any channel that behaves differently and confirm that streaming, audio, captions and remote controls work as expected.

Menu labels can differ by model, region and Roku TV manufacturer. If a television uses a manufacturer-specific settings layer, use the Roku system menu rather than the television’s general picture or network menu.

What OS 15.3 proves—and what it does not

The August 6, 2026 release demonstrates active support through the current date. It does not guarantee that every legacy model will receive every future release, nor does it establish how long support will continue after a change in ownership. Update eligibility is determined by hardware, software compatibility and Roku’s support decisions for that model.

Fact What it means for an owner
Roku OS 15.3 released August 6, 2026 Roku was still issuing software updates before the expected 2027 closing window.
Automatic updates include security and privacy features Leaving updates enabled is the simplest way to receive available protections.
Earlier releases list CVE fixes Roku’s history shows security maintenance, but it is not a promise of indefinite support for every model.
No post-close support schedule published The length and scope of updates after closing remain undecided in public communications.

If an update fails

  • Confirm that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and that other devices can reach the internet.
  • Restart the Roku from Settings → System → Power → System restart where that option is available, then check again.
  • Free storage by removing channels you no longer use, if the device reports insufficient space.
  • Check Roku’s support history for a release applicable to your model and region.
  • If the device remains on an old version while newer releases are available for the same model, contact Roku support rather than repeatedly resetting the device.

What Roku’s privacy policy currently covers

The privacy policy last updated July 1, 2026, applies to Roku websites, Roku players, Roku TV models, Smart Home devices, mobile applications, channels and Roku advertising services. It also covers The Roku Channel and the Roku Sports Channel. The acquisition announcement did not itself replace that policy.

Information Roku says it may collect

  • Account and registration details: information supplied when creating or managing an account.
  • Payment information: billing details used for purchases or subscriptions.
  • Device information: identifiers and technical characteristics associated with a player, television, mobile app or Smart Home product.
  • Viewing and interaction information: what is watched, how services and channels are used, and interactions with Roku features.
  • Advertising interactions: information about advertisements viewed or engaged with.

The exact categories, retention periods and choices available to a particular product can depend on the service, device, account settings and applicable law. The policy is the authoritative place to check the current wording for your region.

How the information is used

Roku says it uses collected information to provide and improve services and to show personalized or targeted advertising. That can include operating accounts, delivering channels, diagnosing problems, measuring engagement, developing features and selecting advertising that is more relevant to a user. A Roku account, a television and a mobile application may expose different controls, so review the settings available on each product you use.

Channel providers have their own responsibilities

Third-party channel providers and their advertising partners may collect information separately from Roku. Installing or using a channel can therefore create a second privacy relationship. Read the provider’s privacy notice and account settings, especially when a channel requests sign-in, location access, voice permissions or advertising personalization. Turning off a Roku-level advertising option does not automatically eliminate data collection performed directly by a channel provider.

Does Fox now receive your Roku viewing data?

There is no published announcement saying that the acquisition immediately transfers Roku viewing data to Fox, and the existing privacy policy has not been replaced by a Fox-specific policy. The careful answer is that the July 1, 2026 Roku policy remains the published set of terms as of October 18, 2026. It permits the categories of collection and uses described above, including service improvement and targeted advertising.

That does not establish what data-sharing arrangements may exist after closing. The transaction communications discuss continuity, investment and integration, but they do not publish revised advertising language, a new data-sharing schedule or a promise that future policies will be identical. If ownership produces a material privacy change, look for a new policy or official notice identifying the data involved, purposes, retention, choices and effective date.

Practical privacy steps today

  1. Open your Roku account and review account, payment and advertising-related settings.
  2. On the device, inspect privacy, advertising and voice settings and disable optional personalization you do not want.
  3. Review permissions and privacy notices for each signed-in channel, not just Roku’s policy.
  4. Use a separate account or profile where appropriate for household members, while recognizing that profiles do not necessarily isolate all device or viewing data.
  5. Watch Roku’s official policy page and account notices for any post-close revision; record the effective date when a new notice appears.

What Fox has said about Roku’s future

An SEC-filed Roku communication attributed to Anthony Wood says that, following closing, Roku will continue to operate under the Roku brand. The same communication says Roku will remain an open, partner-friendly platform supporting the entire streaming ecosystem. Those are stated commitments about brand and platform posture.

What those commitments suggest

  • The Roku name is expected to remain visible rather than being replaced immediately by a Fox-branded service.
  • Roku is expected to continue supporting a broad ecosystem of streaming partners, not only Fox-owned content.
  • The current device-and-platform model is expected to continue through the integration period.

What has not been announced

  • A final post-close privacy policy or advertising-data rule.
  • A guaranteed duration for software or security updates on each legacy model.
  • Whether Fox, Tubi, FOX One or any other Fox service will receive a specific home-screen position.
  • A final organizational structure, integration timetable or regulatory outcome.
  • Any requirement that existing owners buy new hardware.

Fox’s filing also acknowledges integration and regulatory uncertainty. Until definitive notices are issued, treat predictions about home-screen changes, mandatory subscriptions or forced app installation as speculation rather than current policy.

Should you buy a Roku now or wait?

For most buyers, the acquisition alone is not a reason to delay a purchase. A current model that meets your television, network and accessibility needs can be evaluated on ordinary criteria: update history, app and channel availability, privacy controls, content-discovery behavior, hardware price, replacement-remote cost and setup support. The current evidence shows active updates through August 2026 and no announced interruption of service.

Your situation Practical choice Why
You need an inexpensive streamer now Buy a currently supported model after checking regional compatibility. The deal is pending and no replacement requirement has been announced.
Your existing device works and receives updates Keep using it. Roku says the current experience remains unchanged during the transaction.
You are highly sensitive to advertising or data collection Review Roku and channel-provider controls before buying; compare platforms on privacy terms. The current policy allows service-improvement and targeted-advertising uses, and future wording is unknown.
You own an older model with update problems Check model-specific support before deciding whether to replace it. Legacy eligibility, not the acquisition announcement, determines current compatibility.
You can wait for post-close details Wait for a closing notice and any revised policy if those details are decisive. No final post-close privacy, home-screen or support plan has been published.

What to monitor between now and closing

Owners do not need to take emergency action, but a small checklist can prevent surprises:

  • Keep automatic updates enabled and note the software version shown under system information.
  • Save the model number of each Roku player or Roku TV, particularly in a household with older devices.
  • Maintain access to the Roku account email so you can read policy or security notices.
  • Review channel-provider privacy settings when you add a new service.
  • Look for an official closing announcement, a revised privacy policy and a support statement covering existing hardware.
  • Be cautious of messages claiming that you must pay a Fox fee, replace a Roku immediately or surrender account credentials; verify any such claim through official Roku support channels.

The clearest current conclusion is limited but useful: Roku devices, apps, the home screen and updates continue under Roku while the acquisition is pending; the July 1, 2026 privacy policy remains the published policy; and post-close data practices and support commitments are not yet fully defined. Revisit the decision when the transaction closes and when either company publishes specific implementation terms.
