A restaurant’s bankruptcy filing does not automatically cancel its gift cards, erase rewards points, or void reservations. In a U.S. Chapter 11 case, the restaurant may keep operating and ask the bankruptcy court to continue customer programs, but a request is not an order. Whether you can redeem a card, use points, keep a booking, or recover a deposit depends on the debtor’s legal entity, the location’s operating status, and the court’s entered orders.
First, separate the bankruptcy filing from a closure
Chapter 11 is a reorganization process. A restaurant debtor can remain open while it seeks authority to pay suppliers, operate locations, sell assets, and maintain customer-facing programs. The filing date therefore is not, by itself, a cancellation date for every customer benefit.

Restaurants commonly ask the court for permission to honor pre-filing gift cards, continue loyalty programs, accept reservations, and apply deposits to future events. The court may grant all, part, or none of that relief, sometimes on an interim basis and later in a final order. A company announcement or a motion describes what the debtor wants to do; only the entered order establishes what the bankruptcy case permits.

What happens to a restaurant gift card?
A pre-filing card may continue to work
A debtor can ask to keep accepting gift cards sold or issued before the petition date. In a 2019 declaration, Restaurants Unlimited’s officer sought authority, in the debtors’ discretion, to honor pre-filing gift cards and maintain the gift-card program. A separate 2020 motion likewise requested authority, rather than a direction, to honor old cards and continue the program.
A 2017 United States Bankruptcy Court memorandum recounts a restaurant Chapter 11 case in which the business stayed open and the court allowed it, by an order entered December 1, 2016, to honor all outstanding prepetition gift cards. The memorandum identified customer retention and goodwill as reasons supporting redemption. That example shows what is possible; it is not a guarantee for another debtor.
If the restaurant refuses the card
The same court memorandum states: “The Bankruptcy Code does not explicitly provide for the treatment of pre-petition gift card claims.” If a card is not honored, its holder may have a monetary claim in the bankruptcy case. Depending on the facts and the orders entered, the claim might be argued as a priority claim associated with a deposit or treated as a general unsecured claim. Courts have reached different outcomes, and the memorandum expressly notes that the treatment issue was not before that court for decision in the case being discussed.

A proof of claim normally must identify the amount and basis of the claim and be filed by the stated deadline. The court memorandum discusses this filing requirement in liquidation examples, but the applicable deadline and procedure are case-specific.

Why the card’s date and issuer matter
Keep the original card or digital code, purchase receipt, remaining-balance evidence, and any terms showing who issued it. The legal debtor named in the petition may differ from the restaurant’s public brand. A multi-brand card, franchise-issued card, or card sold by a parent company can involve reimbursement arrangements between related entities rather than a simple one-to-one claim.
Cards purchased after the petition date may be governed by different operating arrangements from cards issued before it. Ask the location which legal entity is accepting the card and whether the debtor’s order covers your card type.
Do rewards points, coupons, and dining credits disappear?
Rewards are not automatically cash
Restaurant programs can describe value as points, discounts, coupons, free menu items, Reward Dollars, or non-cash dining credits. Those labels matter. A balance that can be exchanged only for a menu item is not necessarily a cash claim for the same face value, and the reviewed filings do not establish a right to cash out a points balance.
Restaurants Unlimited’s 2019 filing described points earned from meals, beverages, and gift-card purchases and asked to continue the rewards program. Luby’s 2020 filing described Louie Nation points redeemable for dining credits and restaurant promotions, not cash. Those filings show program designs, not a rule that every loyalty balance must continue.

Expiration and promotion terms still apply unless changed
A 2024 customer-program motion for BurgerFi and Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza described separate mechanics involving points, Reward Dollars, free items, and expiration conditions. The terms for earning, redeeming, and expiring value can differ even within the same corporate group. A bankruptcy order may allow a program to continue, modify it, or terminate it.
Save screenshots of your balance, account email, applicable terms, and any coupon or promotion. Record the date and location where you tried to redeem it. If the program is still online, check whether the debtor has posted revised rules or a redemption cutoff. Do not treat a continuing website or mobile app as proof that a court has authorized every feature.
Will a reservation, event booking, or deposit be honored?
Reservations depend on operating status and the order
A reservation can survive a filing when the location remains open and the debtor has authority to continue ordinary operations. It can also be changed or canceled if the location closes, is sold, or the court authorizes a different customer policy. The filing date alone does not tell you which result applies.

A 2022 customer-program motion by a hotel operator with restaurants sought authority to honor gift cards, hold customer deposits, and continue, modify, or terminate customer programs. The filing described dining and hotel gift cards and deposits for future stays, weddings, corporate gatherings, and other events. It asked to apply held deposits to scheduled reservations and events so customers’ plans would not be disturbed. That is an example of requested treatment, not proof that every reservation will proceed or that every deposit is refundable.

Deposits are different from gift cards
A deposit may be tied to a specific event, date, contract, or service. The debtor may propose applying it to the scheduled event rather than returning cash. If the venue closes or cannot perform, the deposit may become a claim, but the priority and amount depend on the contract, applicable law, and bankruptcy orders.
Contact the exact location and obtain a written answer about the booking, payment schedule, cancellation policy, and replacement venue. Preserve the confirmation, contract, invoices, emails, and proof of payment. For a wedding or large event, ask whether a purchaser or successor has assumed the contract and whether your payment was transferred.
How to check your rights in the specific bankruptcy case
- Identify the legal debtor. Use the bankruptcy notice or court docket to find the debtor’s exact name and case number. A public-facing brand can cover multiple corporations, subsidiaries, franchisees, and locations.
- Locate the customer-program filings. Search the docket for “customer programs,” “gift cards,” “loyalty,” “rewards,” “deposits,” and “reservations.” Also look for sale motions, closure notices, and claims-agent instructions.
- Read the entered order, not only the motion. Check whether the court entered an interim or final order, what dates it covers, which card or rewards categories it includes, and whether the debtor may modify or terminate the program.
- Verify the location’s status. Ask the particular restaurant whether it is open, accepting your card or points, and operating under the debtor or a purchaser. A docket entry may not reflect a same-day closure or a franchise decision.
- Check conditions and deadlines. Look for redemption limits, expiration dates, exclusions, reservation cutoffs, and any proof-of-claim bar date. Put the deadline on your calendar rather than relying on an app notification.
- Preserve evidence. Save the card number, receipt, balance screenshot, program terms, reservation confirmation, deposit receipt, and written customer-service responses in one folder.
- File a claim only when the notices call for it. If an unhonored card, deposit, or other value becomes a bankruptcy claim, use the official form and instructions. Do not guess the claim amount or priority category.
How to compare your position: card, points, or reservation

The key comparison is not simply the dollar amount. Also consider whether the value arose before or after the petition date, whether the location remains open, whether a franchisee or third party is involved, what the order authorizes, and what deadline or redemption condition applies.
What the 2024 gift-card figures do—and do not—show
A September 2024 customer-program motion by the BurgerFi and Anthony’s debtors estimated gift-card activity and liabilities for those cases. The debtors reported $122,000 in BurgerFi gift-card receipts and $3,000,000 in Anthony’s receipts during 2023, plus $81,000 and $844,000, respectively, for 2024 to date. They estimated outstanding gift-card liabilities at the petition date of $464,000 for BurgerFi and $610,000 for Anthony’s.
These are debtor-reported, case-specific estimates, not an industry-wide measure of restaurant gift cards. The same filing described different program mechanics and reimbursement arrangements involving participating franchisees. Do not extrapolate those figures to another chain or assume that a reported liability equals the amount any individual customer will recover.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming filing means immediate closure. Chapter 11 debtors may continue operating while seeking program authority.
- Treating a motion as a ruling. A request to honor cards or deposits has no effect beyond what the court actually orders.
- Assuming all locations share one debtor. Corporate and franchise entities can have separate obligations and reimbursement arrangements.
- Calling points cash. Program terms may limit redemption to discounts, free items, or dining credits.
- Expecting an automatic refund or chargeback. The reviewed materials do not establish either remedy; issuer terms, contracts, governing law, and deadlines matter.
- Ignoring the claims bar date. If the debtor stops honoring value and directs customers to file claims, a late filing can jeopardize recovery.
- Relying on an old announcement. A historical statement that cards or reservations were active at filing does not establish present status.
What outcome should you expect?
The most favorable outcome is continued operation under an entered order that lets customers redeem cards, use points, and keep reservations. A middle outcome is a modified program: limited locations, new expiration dates, exclusions, or a requirement to use value by a stated cutoff. The least favorable outcome is closure or termination, leaving customers to pursue a bankruptcy claim whose priority and recovery are uncertain.
Because those outcomes are determined case by case, the reliable sequence is: identify the debtor, find the customer-program order, verify the specific location, preserve proof, and follow the official redemption or claims instructions. Until those checks are complete, neither continued acceptance nor automatic loss can be assumed.
