There is no universal rule: a streaming-company merger does not automatically move your account, profile, watchlist, or downloads. Services may keep their apps separate, offer an optional profile link or copy, or migrate only selected information. Follow the official notice for your country and plan, and keep the old app and profile until you have checked what arrived in the destination service.
A corporate merger does not determine what happens to your account
A transaction between companies and a change to a subscriber’s account are different events. Companies can combine ownership, content, or branding while keeping subscriptions and apps separate. Even when a service adds a way to use one profile in another app, that does not mean every customer is moved automatically or that every type of data follows.

For subscribers, the practical question is what the service says will happen to a particular account, in a particular country, on a particular plan, and by a particular date. Look for an operational announcement or account-support instructions—not just news that a deal has been announced or completed. A proposed transaction may also have conditions or plans that change before closing.

- Migration: information moves from one service or account to another, potentially replacing or removing the original.
- Linking: a customer connects a profile or account to another service. The connection may be one-way and may carry only selected information.
- Transfer or copy: a new profile is created from selected data, while the original remains where it was.
Do not assume which process applies from labels such as “integration” or “profile transfer.” Check whether action is required, whether the original remains, and whether the destination account can accept the profile.
What the documented services show
The examples below illustrate different account arrangements; they are not a shared industry-wide policy. The cited Hulu guidance is for the United States and was dated May 19, 2026. The HBO Max rules are from its US Help Center. Netflix’s Profile Transfer post was published October 17, 2022 and updated in July 2023. Eligibility and product policies can change, so check the service’s current help page before acting.

Which profile details and viewing data may carry over?
“Your profile” can mean several separate pieces of information. A service might transfer some fields and leave others behind. Before you confirm a link or transfer, look for an itemized list of what is included rather than relying on the general promise that a profile will carry over.

- Identity and controls: profile name, avatar, PIN, age category, parental controls, and other settings may be treated separately. For example, the HBO Max transfer guidance lists an avatar, PIN, and settings, but excludes Kids profiles.
- Viewing activity: watch history can be distinct from Continue Watching. Hulu’s linking instructions describe most history appearing in Disney+ Continue Watching for eligible linked profiles; that wording does not promise every title or every history-related feature will match.
- Recommendations: a service may include recommendations in a profile transfer or carry them over for eligible linked profiles. That does not mean recommendation systems will behave identically after moving, because the destination service may have different available titles.
- Saved titles: a watchlist may be called My List or My Stuff, and its migration may have its own rules. Hulu says saved titles in My Stuff appear in Disney+ Watchlist for eligible linked profiles, subject to availability and destination list capacity.
- Other account data: saved games or additional settings appear in Netflix’s description of its own Profile Transfer feature. Their inclusion there does not imply that another service transfers equivalent information.
Also check whether the operation is one-way, whether it is reversible, and whether it leaves a copy behind. A link can be one-way even when the source app remains usable. If the old profile continues to exist, changes made in the destination may not sync back.
Why watchlists can arrive incomplete
A watchlist is not necessarily a portable list of titles that every service can reproduce. The destination must recognize each saved title and make it available to the account. A title may be missing because it is unavailable in that app or region, or because the destination has a limit on how many items can be saved. Hulu’s guidance specifically warns that some Hulu content is unavailable in Disney+ and that the Disney+ watchlist may have a capacity limit.
After linking or transferring, compare the destination list with the source list while you still have access to both. For each important omission, check whether the title appears in the destination’s search and whether it can be saved there. A missing title does not necessarily mean the account operation failed; it may not be available in the destination catalog or may not fit under a list limit. Save a record of the titles you care about if the source list could become inaccessible.

Downloads are a separate question
Offline downloads should not be treated like profile data. A downloaded episode lives in an app and is governed by that service’s plan, device, title availability, and offline-use rules. The available bundle guidance for Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max says subscribers need each app separately and that features and usage rules vary, including temporary downloads. It does not say that downloaded files, offline rights, or expiration clocks move between apps.
That distinction matters because a profile link can carry watch history or saved titles without transferring the downloaded video or its right to play offline. Conversely, the absence of a clear download-migration promise does not prove that all existing downloads will be deleted. The answer remains unresolved unless the exact service’s notice addresses existing downloads, the app transition, or the title in question.
If you need entertainment for a trip during a service change, download essential episodes in the app you currently use before the change, then check offline playback in the destination app when it is available. This is a practical precaution, not a guarantee that downloads or licenses will survive an app shutdown, account change, or merger.

Check these conditions before you link or transfer
Eligibility can depend on the plan, profile type, region, and state of the source account. The rules in a help article are not necessarily permanent, so verify them for your own account before beginning.
- Country and region: the HBO Max transfer rules require source and destination accounts to be in the same country or region. Do not assume a transfer works across borders.
- Profile type and age: HBO Max excludes Kids profiles. Hulu’s cited linking guidance excludes Kids or under-18 profiles.
- Plan or bundle: Hulu’s cited guidance excludes Live TV plans, the Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle, and Hulu Add-ons from the described linking feature. Do not infer eligibility from having access to both services; check the plan exclusions and current instructions.
- Active subscription: HBO Max requires the source subscription to be active for its described transfer.
- Destination capacity: HBO Max requires room under the destination account’s profile limit. Separately, Hulu warns that a Disney+ watchlist capacity limit may leave saved titles out.
- Account access: make sure you can sign in to both the source and destination accounts, and know which email and plan are attached to each before starting.
A safe step-by-step migration check
- Find the official notice for your account. Use the service’s app or Help Center and confirm the country, plan, effective date, and account type covered. A corporate announcement alone does not tell you whether your account changes.
- Record your starting point. Note the account email and plan. Take an inventory of profiles, important watchlist titles, and any settings you would need to restore. Do this before access or the source app changes.
- Confirm whether action is required. Determine whether migration is automatic or whether you must link or transfer a profile. Use only the official app or website flow, not a third-party tool or an unsolicited message.
- Read the included-data and eligibility rules. Check profile type, plan, region, active-subscription requirements, and destination limits. Confirm which fields move and whether the process is a one-way link, a copy, or a move.
- Complete the official flow only if the destination is correct. Check the account and profile names shown in the confirmation step. If the process’s effect on the original is unclear, pause and consult the service’s Help Center before confirming.
- Inspect the destination. Verify the profile, PIN or settings, viewing activity, recommendations, and saved titles that matter to you. Search for missing watchlist items and distinguish unavailable titles from transfer failures.
- Test playback and billing before closing the old account. Confirm you can play the content you expect in the destination and check which subscription is billing you. Keep the old app and profile until those checks are complete.
- Handle offline viewing separately. Check whether the exact service says downloads remain available, must be recreated, or expire. If its notice is silent, do not assume they transfer; prepare any essential offline viewing in advance.
When something is missing or does not work
The linking or transfer option is not available
Check the current eligibility rules first: the feature may exclude your plan, profile type, region, or account status. Hulu’s cited linking instructions, for example, exclude some bundles and add-ons as well as Live TV and under-18 or Kids profiles. If the account appears eligible but the official option is absent, use the service’s account support rather than attempting to recreate the process through an unofficial route.

The destination profile has no history or recommendations
Confirm that you linked or transferred the intended source profile and that the service says those fields are included for your type of operation. In Hulu’s case, the cited guidance ties carryover to an eligible linked profile; having both subscriptions alone does not establish that the source profile was linked. Avoid unlinking or deleting the source while investigating.
Some saved titles are missing
Check title availability in the destination app and whether its watchlist has a capacity limit. The Hulu-to-Disney+ guidance identifies both unavailable content and a possible destination list cap as reasons a list may not match. Record important missing titles and add them in the destination if they are available.
Downloads do not appear in the destination app
Profile migration guidance does not answer whether downloaded files or offline rights move. Consult the exact service’s notice for downloads, device support, subscription tier, title availability, and expiration rules. If those terms are not specified, treat the status as unknown rather than evidence that the download is either safely transferred or permanently erased.
What the transaction examples do—and do not—tell you
Netflix’s Profile Transfer is a useful example of keeping selected personal data when moving between Netflix memberships: Netflix says it can carry recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings, and its post was updated in July 2023 to include transfers to existing accounts. It remains a Netflix-to-Netflix feature, not a general way to import data from another streaming service.
Separately, an SEC-filed Form 425 FAQ about Netflix’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery said, at the time of that filing, that the services would remain separate pending transaction closing, memberships were not changing then, and Netflix profiles, recommendations, and watch history were unchanged. Those statements describe the filing’s moment; they are not a promise about later integration plans. Similarly, Discovery+ Help Center guidance said Discovery+ would remain a standalone service after Max launched. Together, these examples show why a transaction headline or shared content strategy cannot substitute for account-specific instructions.
When evaluating any announcement, compare six points: whether change is automatic or requires action; whether the result is a one-way link, a copy, or a move; which fields are included; which plans, profile types, and regions qualify; whether content availability or list limits affect saved titles; and what happens to app-specific downloads and their deadlines. If the official notice does not answer one of those points, treat that part as unspecified rather than assuming a general rule.
