Anthropic describes separate rules for API requests, saved commercial conversations, Enterprise workspaces, consumer accounts, and Computer Use. Standard API inputs and outputs are normally deleted from Anthropic’s backend within 30 days, while saved chats can remain until deleted or an administrator’s retention policy expires. Approved Zero Data Retention (ZDR) arrangements can change API storage, but do not automatically cover every Anthropic product or third-party service. Computer Use can send screenshots of the computer display for processing, so screen content must be treated like prompt data.
Start by identifying the Claude surface
Do not apply one retention period to every automated task. The same prompt may receive different handling depending on whether it is sent through the Anthropic API, a Claude commercial workspace, Claude Enterprise, or a consumer account. The account’s contract, administrator settings, feature configuration, and any connected automation runner also matter.

| Claude surface or feature | What Anthropic says happens | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Anthropic API | Inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from backend systems within 30 days of receipt or generation. | Exceptions include another agreement such as ZDR, retention needed for Usage Policy enforcement, and legal requirements. Anthropic commercial retention policy |
| Commercial products with saved chats or coding sessions | Conversations are retained so users can continue them. Deleting a conversation removes it from visible history immediately; backend deletion occurs within 30 days. | Flagged violations and feedback can have longer, separate retention periods. Commercial retention details |
| Claude Enterprise | Administrators can set custom retention for chats and projects. | The default is indefinite retention; custom periods have a 30-day minimum. Enterprise retention controls |
| Consumer Claude accounts | Chats and coding sessions follow consumer deletion and model-improvement settings. | Training, safety review, feedback, and deletion conditions differ from commercial accounts. Consumer deletion policy |
| Computer Use | Claude processes screenshots, user inputs, and outputs to interpret and operate a computer interface. | Screenshots are deleted from Anthropic’s backend within 30 days by default, subject to exceptions or different terms. Computer Use data description |
What happens to prompts and outputs sent through the API?
Under Anthropic’s stated commercial policy, a standard API request is not kept indefinitely: the input and generated output are deleted from Anthropic backend systems within 30 days. The clock starts from receipt of the input or generation of the output, as applicable. This is an automatic backend-deletion practice, not a promise that no transient processing, logs, or records exist anywhere in your own automation stack.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The 30-day rule has explicit exceptions. A customer may have a different contractual arrangement, such as an approved ZDR agreement. Anthropic may retain material longer when necessary to enforce its Usage Policy, and legal obligations can require retention. If a prompt is investigated as a policy violation, the commercial retention article says inputs and outputs may be retained for up to two years, while related trust-and-safety classification scores may be retained for up to seven years. Feedback data is handled separately and may be retained for five years under that policy.

Therefore, “the API deletes data after 30 days” is an incomplete statement. The accurate version is: standard API inputs and outputs are normally deleted within 30 days, unless a contract, safety-enforcement need, or law requires a different period.
How saved commercial chats differ from API calls
Commercial products that let people save and resume conversations retain chats and coding sessions to provide that continuity. Deleting a conversation removes it from the visible chat history immediately. Anthropic says backend deletion follows within 30 days, subject to legal, safety, and policy exceptions.
That behavior is different from sending an isolated API request. An automation that uses a workspace conversation, project knowledge base, or coding session may create a durable record even when the underlying model call resembles an API prompt. Check whether the workflow is creating saved conversations, uploading files, or updating a project rather than making a stateless request.

Enterprise retention controls and the expiry clock
Claude Enterprise administrators can configure custom retention periods for chats and projects. Anthropic states that retention is indefinite by default unless an administrator sets a custom period, and the minimum custom period is 30 days.
Chats
For a chat, the retention period begins with the date of the last message. Sending a new message therefore updates the activity point and can extend the life of the record under the configured policy.
Projects
For a project, the clock begins with the last project update. Anthropic includes chat creation and knowledge-base changes as project updates, so adding reference material or creating a new chat can reset the expiry point.

Deletion timing
Anthropic says expired data is permanently deleted at midnight UTC on the scheduled day. Teams operating across time zones should use UTC when documenting deletion expectations. An administrator should also record the configured period and whether the policy applies to both chats and projects.

Some enterprise API customers can receive an approved ZDR arrangement. Under that arrangement, Anthropic says API inputs and outputs are not stored except when needed to comply with law or combat misuse. UserSafety classifier results are still retained for Usage Policy enforcement.
ZDR is scoped, not universal. Anthropic says it applies to the Anthropic API and Anthropic products that use a customer’s commercial organization API key, including Claude Code. It does not automatically apply to Claude for Work, Claude Max, Workbench in Console, beta products, or other products unless the agreement explicitly includes them.

Features that can override or bypass ZDR expectations
- Explicit prompt caching: cached prompt material can require storage even when the underlying arrangement is ZDR.
- Certain batch API calls: batch processing may have separate storage behavior.
- Files API: uploaded files are retained until the customer deletes them, so they should not be treated as automatically covered by a no-storage assumption.
- Third-party websites: information processed during web search or otherwise shared outside Anthropic can be retained under the third party’s terms.
Before enabling an automation, list every endpoint and feature it uses, then verify that the ZDR agreement covers that exact path. “The organization has ZDR” is not enough by itself.
Computer Use can expose everything visible on the screen
Computer Use is a beta capability for commercial customers using the Anthropic API, built and enabled by a developer. When prompted, Claude processes screenshots of the computer display to interpret and interact with the interface, along with the user’s inputs and the model’s outputs. Anthropic says it does not collect additional computer-interface data beyond what it describes.
Screenshots can contain more than the text you intended to automate: email previews, browser tabs, customer records, notifications, passwords in fields, internal dashboards, or personal photos. Treat each captured frame as a potentially sensitive data class. Anthropic’s stated default is to delete screenshots from its backend within 30 days, subject to different terms and Usage Policy enforcement needs.
Best Value
Reduce screen exposure before running an action
- Open only the application and record needed for the task.
- Close unrelated tabs, chat windows, notifications, and password managers.
- Use test accounts and synthetic records where possible.
- Mask or remove personal data before a screenshot can be captured.
- Prefer direct API integrations for structured data when a screen is not required.
Is prompt data used to train models?
For commercial products, Anthropic says inputs and outputs are not used to train models by default. The stated exceptions include submitting feedback or bug reports and explicitly opting in to use of data for improvement. An organization’s contract and internal policy can impose stricter requirements, so administrators should document the setting that applies to their account.
Consumer accounts have different controls. Anthropic says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when the user enables the relevant setting, when conversations are flagged for safety review, or when the user otherwise explicitly opts in. Consumer deletion removes a conversation from visible history immediately, with backend deletion within 30 days subject to policy, legal, and safety exceptions. Do not transfer the commercial “not used for training by default” statement to a consumer account.
Feedback is also distinct from ordinary prompts. Submitting a thumbs-up, bug report, or other feedback can place associated content under a separate retention and improvement process.
Trace the complete data path, not just Anthropic’s policy
An automated task often has four or more recipients: Anthropic, the automation runner, connected tools or websites, and the final destination where a result is stored or sent. Anthropic’s policies cannot establish how an independent task runner, browser extension, MCP server, connector, search provider, or destination service logs, trains on, or deletes data.
Questions to answer for every hop
- Does the service store prompts, outputs, screenshots, files, or tool arguments?
- What is the default retention period, and can an administrator shorten it?
- Are records used for model training, quality review, fraud prevention, or debugging?
- Who can access the data—service staff, workspace owners, contractors, or connected applications?
- Can you delete individual runs and uploaded files, or only close the account?
- Does data leave your region, and which legal entity controls it?
For Claude for Work, Anthropic says the organization’s Primary Owner manages the account and associated data and can request exports containing conversations, uploaded files, and usage patterns. The organization’s agreement with Anthropic and its internal policies govern access and feature availability. Employees should not assume that deleting a local automation log deletes the organization’s copy.
A privacy-first setup for automated Claude tasks
- Classify the task. Mark whether prompts include personal data, confidential business information, regulated records, credentials, source code, or screen content.
- Select the narrowest Claude surface. Use a stateless API call when saved conversation history is unnecessary; use Enterprise controls when a team needs managed retention.
- Confirm the contract and account type. Record whether the account is commercial, consumer, Enterprise, or covered by an approved ZDR agreement.
- Set retention deliberately. Configure the shortest Enterprise period that meets operational needs, and document the UTC deletion schedule. Remember that the minimum custom period is 30 days.
- Audit feature exceptions. Check prompt caching, batch calls, Files API uploads, Computer Use screenshots, web search, and any beta feature separately.
- Minimize the prompt. Remove names, identifiers, secrets, unnecessary history, and unrelated attachments. Use placeholders inside the workflow and restore real values only in a controlled system.
- Secure the runner and destination. Restrict logs, redact prompt and output bodies, encrypt transfers and storage, and limit who can retrieve run histories.
- Test deletion. Delete a sample conversation or file, verify disappearance from the user interface, and confirm backend or downstream deletion according to each provider’s documented process.
- Write an incident path. Decide who disables the automation, revokes tokens, investigates screenshots and logs, and notifies affected people if sensitive data is exposed.
Common privacy mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Assuming every Claude request is deleted in 30 days | Saved chats, Enterprise projects, safety investigations, and legal holds follow different rules. | Identify the product and applicable exception before promising a deadline. |
| Treating ZDR as a blanket switch | ZDR may not cover Work, Workbench, beta features, Files API, caching, or third-party sites. | Map the exact feature and data path to the written agreement. |
| Running Computer Use on a normal desktop | Screenshots can capture unrelated confidential or personal information. | Use a clean, restricted, synthetic-data environment. |
| Sending secrets in prompts | Secrets can appear in prompts, outputs, screenshots, logs, or destination systems. | Use short-lived credentials, redaction, and secret-management tools outside the model context. |
| Deleting only the chat | Files, automation logs, caches, exports, and destination records may remain. | Execute deletion across every recipient and retain evidence of completion. |
Decision checklist before production
- Which Claude product and account type will receive the data?
- Is the workflow stateless, or does it create saved chats, projects, files, or caches?
- What is the documented retention period for prompts, outputs, screenshots, and uploaded files?
- Could Usage Policy enforcement, safety review, feedback, or law extend retention?
- Is the organization covered by an approved ZDR agreement, and does it cover every feature used?
- Are commercial training defaults, consumer settings, and opt-in choices recorded?
- Which automation vendors, websites, connectors, and destinations receive copies?
- Can an administrator export, delete, and audit the data?
- Have you removed unnecessary personal data and tested the workflow with synthetic records?
Bottom line for operators
Automating Claude does not create one privacy outcome. Standard commercial API traffic is normally deleted from Anthropic’s backend within 30 days, but saved conversations, Enterprise retention settings, safety exceptions, files, screenshots, consumer controls, and third-party services can change what remains and for how long. Build a data-flow inventory, choose the correct account and retention mode, minimize what the model can see, and verify every recipient’s deletion and training terms before sending production data.
