Compressing and resizing are different operations. Lossy compression can discard image information to make a file smaller, while changing pixel dimensions through resampling removes pixels or invents estimates for new ones. Either operation can leave a photo looking unchanged, visibly worse, or occasionally better suited to its destination, depending on the image, format, settings, and viewing size.
Compression and resizing change different things
People often use “resize” to mean any change to an image’s size, but two separate changes are involved:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- File compression changes how image data is encoded for storage or transfer. The pixel dimensions can remain exactly the same.
- Resampling changes the number of pixels in the image. It recalculates the image on a new pixel grid.
- Display or print scaling changes how existing pixels are shown or distributed over a physical area without necessarily changing the pixels themselves.
A photo can therefore be compressed without being resized, resized without being compressed, or subjected to both operations in one export. Checking the pixel dimensions and the file size separately tells you which change actually occurred.
What lossy compression does to a photo
JPEG trades information for a smaller file
JPEG is a lossy format commonly used for photographs. Its encoder analyzes visual information and stores a more compact representation. In doing so, it can discard details that are expected to be less noticeable. A modest reduction may be difficult to see at normal viewing size, but aggressive compression can remove fine texture, soften edges, and produce block-shaped or ringing artifacts.

The visible threshold is not fixed. A picture of a clear sky may tolerate a particular setting better than a portrait with hair, skin texture, and sharp contrast. Foliage, text over a photo, repeated patterns, and strong edges can expose compression damage sooner. The same numeric setting can also produce different results in different encoders or applications.
Lossless compression preserves pixels
Lossless compression reduces storage size while allowing the original pixel values to be reconstructed. PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency, so it is often a better fit when exact pixel preservation or an alpha channel matters. PNG is not automatically smaller than JPEG: photographic images can require considerably more space in a lossless format, while graphics with flat colors or repeated patterns may compress efficiently.
Repeated JPEG exports can compound damage
Opening and saving a JPEG again with another lossy export can discard additional information. That does not mean every save in every format causes the same loss; the effect depends on the format and the operation. Keep an untouched original and perform edits from that copy. Export a final version once, at dimensions and a format suited to its destination, whenever practical.
What resizing does to pixel data
Downsampling removes pixels
When you reduce pixel dimensions, the software combines or discards information to create fewer pixels. This is called downsampling. A smaller image can look clean and sharp because it no longer has to carry detail that the destination cannot display, but very small dimensions can erase texture, thin lines, or fine facial detail permanently.

Upsampling estimates pixels
When you enlarge pixel dimensions, the software must create values for pixels that were not present in the source. This is upsampling or enlargement. Interpolation can make an image appear smoother at a larger display size, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured or that was previously removed. Excessive enlargement may look soft, plastic-like, or show halos and other interpolation artifacts.
Adobe’s Photoshop documentation states: “When you resample, it can reduce the quality of the image.” Adobe recommends starting with dimensions appropriate for the intended output and avoiding unnecessary repeated resampling. If several edits are needed, work from the original and resample as few times as the workflow allows.
Preserve proportions unless distortion is intentional
Changing width and height independently stretches faces, circles, and architectural lines. Keep the aspect ratio locked when resizing, then crop separately if the destination requires a different shape. A crop removes part of the image; a non-proportional resize changes the geometry of everything that remains.

Changing print size is not the same as resampling
An image may contain the same pixels but be assigned a different physical print size. For example, a fixed pixel count can be printed small and dense or large and less dense. Changing the size or resolution metadata without enabling resampling changes the density at which existing pixels are placed; it does not create, remove, or sharpen pixels.

Print calculations are straightforward: physical width in inches equals pixel width divided by pixels per inch (ppi), and the same relationship applies to height. A 3,000-pixel-wide image assigned 300 ppi is mapped to 10 inches wide; assigning 150 ppi maps those same pixels to 20 inches. The second setting does not make the file contain more detail. It spreads the existing pixels over a larger area.
Adobe describes 300 ppi as a typical print-resolution setting, not a universal requirement. The appropriate density depends on the physical size, viewing distance, printer, paper, and the detail in the image. A large wall print viewed from farther away may not need the same ppi as a small print examined closely.
Screen output and print output require different decisions
For screens, start with pixel dimensions
Displays and web services ultimately show a certain number of pixels. Prepare an image to the dimensions the layout or service needs rather than relying on a high ppi metadata value. A 4,000-pixel photo displayed in a 900-pixel slot may consume more bandwidth than necessary; reducing the pixel dimensions can improve loading while preserving the appearance at that displayed size.
Check the exported file at the size it will actually occupy on a screen. A thumbnail can hide artifacts that become obvious when a user opens the full image, while inspecting a file at extreme zoom can make harmless interpolation look worse than it is in normal use.

For print, match pixels to the physical target
Specify the intended paper or product size first, then determine whether the source has enough pixels for a suitable ppi. If it does, change the print dimensions without resampling to alter the mapping. If it does not, downsampling will not help; upsampling may be necessary for the output, but it will estimate missing detail rather than restore it.
How format choice changes the quality–size trade-off
| Choice | What changes | Typical strength | Main risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG with lossy compression | Some image information is discarded during encoding | Small files for photographic images | Detail loss, block artifacts, or ringing at aggressive settings; results vary by encoder and image |
| PNG with lossless compression | Encoding is compacted without changing recoverable pixel values | Exact pixel preservation and transparency | Photographs can be much larger than equivalent JPEG files |
| Downsampling | Pixel dimensions and available detail are reduced | Faster delivery and dimensions matched to a destination | Fine detail removed permanently |
| Upsampling | New pixels are estimated from existing ones | Meeting a larger output dimension when no larger source exists | Softness or interpolation artifacts; no genuine new detail |
| Changing print size without resampling | Pixel density and physical mapping change | Setting a print size while retaining all source pixels | Does not increase pixel count or create detail |
Choose based on the destination and the image type, not on a format’s reputation alone. A transparent logo and a camera photograph have different requirements. If transparency or exact pixel values matter, a lossless format may be preferable; if a photographic image must be delivered efficiently and slight loss is acceptable, JPEG may be appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a quality number is not universal
Applications expose different controls under labels such as “quality,” “compression,” or “最大 quality.” The number is an encoder-specific instruction, not a cross-software standard. Pillow’s version 12.3.0 documentation describes a JPEG quality range of 0–95 and advises avoiding values above 95 because they create very large files with hardly any image-quality gain. That guidance applies to Pillow’s documented encoder controls; it should not be applied automatically to every editor, service, or camera.

Two exports both labeled “80” can differ because the encoders, chroma handling, color conversion, subsampling choices, and image content differ. A high number can still produce visible artifacts on a difficult image, and a lower number may look acceptable on a simple one. Compare the actual exported files instead of treating a slider position as a guaranteed quality level.

A reliable workflow for compressing or resizing
- Keep the original. Save an untouched, full-resolution copy. Make working copies for edits and exports.
- Identify the destination. Record the required screen dimensions, maximum upload size, or physical print dimensions before changing the image.
- Choose pixel dimensions. For screen use, match the needed display dimensions. For print, relate the available pixels to the target physical size and a sensible ppi.
- Preserve the aspect ratio. Lock proportional scaling and crop separately when a different shape is required.
- Resample once when practical. Start from the original at dimensions suited to the final use rather than repeatedly enlarging and reducing the same derivative.
- Select a format. Use a lossless format when transparency or exact pixels are important; use a lossy photographic format when its smaller size is worth the information trade-off.
- Adjust compression conservatively. Do not assume a particular slider value works for every image. Export a few candidates if the decision matters.
- Inspect the actual export. View it at the intended screen size or print scale. Check faces, text, fine edges, gradients, skies, and patterned areas for softness, blocks, halos, or banding.
- Verify the result. Confirm the pixel dimensions, file size, color mode, transparency, and destination limits before uploading or sending it to print.
Common symptoms and what they mean
The file is smaller but looks blocky
This usually indicates aggressive lossy compression. Return to the original, raise the encoder’s quality setting or choose a less aggressive option, and compare the resulting file size with the visible improvement. If the destination allows it, a lossless format may avoid the artifacts, although the file may be larger.
The resized image looks blurry
Downsampling may have removed detail, or upsampling may have spread limited source detail over too many pixels. Re-export from the original at the destination dimensions. Enlarging an already reduced copy cannot restore information.
The print is unexpectedly large or small
Check the print-size or ppi metadata and the application’s resampling checkbox. Changing density without resampling changes the physical mapping; changing pixel dimensions is a separate operation. Make sure the print dialog is not applying another scale.
Edges have halos or ringing
Strong sharpening before or during a lossy export can emphasize edges and make compression artifacts more visible. Work from the original, resize to the final dimensions, then apply restrained output sharpening if the software provides it, and inspect at normal viewing size.
A transparent image has a colored or solid background
The chosen format or export settings may not preserve transparency. Use a format that supports the required alpha channel and verify the result against both light and dark backgrounds before delivery.
What cannot be predicted from a setting alone
No single compression value, ppi number, or resize percentage guarantees an identical visual result for every photo. The outcome depends on the original capture, image content, encoder, color and subsampling settings, pixel dimensions, destination, and viewing conditions. A specific recommendation requires comparing the actual source and exported versions at their intended use size.
The safest principle is to preserve the original, decide the destination first, change pixel dimensions only when needed, and judge the exported file rather than a slider label. Compression controls file size and may discard information; resampling controls pixel count and may remove or estimate information. Print-size metadata alone changes neither.
