Short answer: T-Mobile’s promotional phone credits generally stop when the associated service is canceled. The unpaid portion of the phone’s equipment-installment plan (EIP) does not disappear; depending on whether you cancel one line or the whole account, T-Mobile may continue billing the installments or place the remaining device balance on your final bill.
The exact result is promotion-specific. Before you port a number, cancel a line, or close the account, find the offer terms and ask T-Mobile to confirm both the remaining credits and the EIP balance for your device.

Credits and the phone balance are two separate obligations
A T-Mobile phone promotion usually combines two transactions: an EIP that charges for the device over time and recurring bill credits that offset some or all of those installments. The credit is conditional promotional pricing, not a reduction of the phone’s underlying principal.
For example, if a monthly installment is partly covered by a recurring credit, the unpaid principal still exists even though your current bill may show little or no net device charge. Stopping future credits therefore does not cancel what remains on the EIP. T-Mobile’s promotional-offer FAQ states that service is generally required for promotional pricing and that, after service cancellation, monthly bill credits stop and the full device balance may be due: T-Mobile Promotional Offers — Exclusive Deals and Discounts.

There is no universal payoff amount or credit period. The device, promotion, enrollment date, trade-in requirements, number of credits already received, and remaining EIP principal all matter. What changes when you take each action?
The most important distinction is whether you remove one line, close the entire account, pay the EIP while retaining service, or port your number to another carrier.

Canceling a single line
If you remove one phone line but leave other lines active on the account, T-Mobile’s support page says the device payments associated with the canceled line continue monthly. That means a line cancellation does not automatically make every remaining installment due at once under the general guidance.

However, the promotional credit is tied to eligibility for the line and offer. Credits on the canceled line may stop, leaving you responsible for the regular installment amount that remains. Check whether the promotion also required a particular rate plan, trade-in, or minimum period of active service; those conditions can affect the result.
Canceling the entire account
When you close all service, T-Mobile says any remaining device balances become due on the final bill. Future promotional credits cannot be applied after the service that qualified for them has been canceled under the general rule. The final invoice can therefore be substantially higher than a normal monthly bill because it may include the unpaid EIP principal in addition to service charges through the applicable billing period.
Why the distinction matters
People often hear “canceling means you must pay off the phone” and apply that statement to every situation. T-Mobile’s own guidance is narrower: a whole-account cancellation accelerates remaining device balances, while a canceled line on an otherwise active account can leave installments continuing monthly. The promotion’s eligibility language still controls whether credits survive either event.
What T-Mobile’s promotion terms can require
Do not rely solely on the name of a promotion or on what appeared in an advertisement. Locate the full offer terms for your enrollment. T-Mobile says EIP and credit consequences vary by promotion, and its offer pages contain offer-specific eligibility rules.

Find the promotion identity
- Sign in to your T-Mobile account and open the device, billing, or promotion details associated with the phone.
- Record the promotion ID or offer name, enrollment date, device, and line receiving the credits.
- Retrieve the original confirmation email, receipt, or offer disclosure if the account page does not show the complete terms.
Check the conditions that remain
Read for requirements such as an active qualifying line, a specific rate plan, good-standing status, trade-in completion, or a defined number of monthly credits. T-Mobile’s offer examples state that eligibility can depend on keeping an active line in good standing. A missed payment, plan change, or line cancellation can therefore matter independently of the phone’s installment balance.
Separate received credits from future credits
Ask for two numbers: the credits already applied and the number still scheduled. The first is historical billing; the second is conditional and can be lost if eligibility ends. Also obtain the current EIP principal, not merely the next monthly installment, so you can compare the cost of leaving with the value of staying for the remaining credit period.
Porting your number to another carrier
Porting is a common way to leave T-Mobile, but it can trigger the same consequences as a cancellation. T-Mobile’s cancellation guidance says service is billed through the end of the billing cycle when a number is ported out. If that port removes the last active line, the account is effectively being closed and the remaining device balances are addressed on the final bill under the account-cancellation rule.

Before you authorize the port, ask T-Mobile to identify whether the line’s EIP will continue, accelerate, or require another treatment and what happens to each pending credit. The official material does not say that T-Mobile credits transfer to the new carrier, so do not include those credits in your switching budget unless T-Mobile confirms a specific outcome for your offer.

Keep the port confirmation and the last bill. If the number ports near the end of a cycle, the final invoice may still contain service charges through the cycle’s end, even though the number is already active elsewhere.

Early EIP payoff is different from canceling service. You can pay the device’s remaining principal and continue using the qualifying T-Mobile line. T-Mobile’s promotional FAQ says an early payoff may allow promised recurring credits to continue as account-level credits through the rest of the credit period, subject to the offer and applicable conditions.
That statement is not a promise that credits continue after a line or account cancellation. It also should not be generalized to every promotion. Confirm in writing or in your account records that your particular offer allows credits after payoff, how they will appear, and what event would end them.

A pre-cancellation checklist
Complete these checks before submitting a cancellation request or porting a number:
- Identify the offer. Save the promotion ID, full terms, device IMEI or installment record, and the line attached to the offer.
- Get the EIP balance. Ask for the current remaining principal and whether it is payable immediately or continues monthly if only one line is removed.
- Count pending credits. Note the amount and number of future credits, plus any deadline or minimum-service condition.
- Confirm account scope. Tell T-Mobile whether you are canceling one line, porting one number, or closing every line.
- Ask about plan eligibility. Verify that your current rate plan and account status satisfy the offer through the date of the requested change.
- Request a written or recorded explanation. Ask support to state what will happen to credits and the device balance for that exact promotion.
- Plan for cycle-end billing. If you port, ask how service through the end of the billing cycle will appear on the final invoice.
- Save evidence. Keep chat transcripts, confirmation numbers, screenshots of the offer, and the final bill until all credits and charges are resolved.
T-Mobile itself recommends checking the offer terms and contacting it before canceling. That step is especially important when the promotional disclosure is old, the account has changed plans, or more than one line is involved.
Reading the final bill
Review the final statement line by line rather than looking only at the total. Depending on what you canceled, it may show service charges through the applicable billing period, the last recurring credit that qualified before cancellation, regular EIP installments, or the remaining device principal due after whole-account cancellation.

A credit that was scheduled for a future month is not necessarily an error if the qualifying service ended first; a device balance that appears after a single-line cancellation deserves comparison with T-Mobile’s statement that installments tied to that line continue monthly when other account lines remain.
If a charge or missing credit conflicts with the promotion terms, contact T-Mobile promptly with the promotion ID and your saved documentation. Ask the representative to explain the billing code, the date eligibility ended, and whether the issue is a delayed credit, a plan-eligibility change, or an EIP balance that was correctly billed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the phone becomes free. Promotional credits reduce monthly charges; they do not erase unpaid principal when future credits stop.
- Assuming every cancellation accelerates the EIP. Whole-account cancellation and single-line cancellation have different treatment in T-Mobile’s support guidance.
- Treating early payoff as cancellation. An EIP payoff while service remains active may be compatible with continuing account-level credits under some offers.
- Using a generic promotion example. Credit amounts and installment periods on an offer page do not establish your personal balance.
- Porting first and asking later. Once a number is ported, the billing and eligibility event may already have occurred; confirm beforehand.
- Expecting credits to move to another carrier. T-Mobile’s cited guidance does not establish that credits transfer.
Bottom line for your decision
If you leave T-Mobile before a device-credit promotion ends, budget for the loss of future credits and for whatever EIP treatment applies to your action. Keeping other lines active can mean installments continue rather than becoming immediately due, while closing the entire account brings remaining device balances onto the final bill. Paying off the EIP without canceling service is a separate path that may preserve account-level credits under the specific offer. Confirm the promotion terms and exact figures with T-Mobile before you port or cancel.
