The eventual amount available depends on investment performance, contributions, charges, and when and how you take the money. A defined benefit (DB) pension works differently: it promises benefits under scheme rules, although its transfer value can still change.
The practical impact depends on your time horizon. A fall on a statement is not automatically a permanent loss, but selling investments at lower prices to fund withdrawals leaves fewer units invested for any later rise—and a recovery is never guaranteed.

Defined contribution: an invested pot
A DC pension builds an individual pot from contributions and investment returns. The money is invested in funds or other assets, so the pot’s value moves as those underlying investments move. A statement valuation is the value at a particular date, not a promise of what you will receive at retirement.

Charges, the amount and timing of contributions, and investment performance all affect the outcome. A fall in the prices of the assets held by your fund can therefore produce a lower current valuation even when you have made no change to the account.
Defined benefit: benefits set by scheme rules
A DB scheme promises benefits according to its rules, commonly using factors such as salary and length of service. The scheme is responsible for funding those promised benefits. That is not the same as owning an investment pot whose daily value is your retirement income.
Investment losses in a DB scheme should not be treated as a one-for-one reduction in the pension income stated under the rules. However, if you ask to transfer out, the transfer value is calculated using financial assumptions and can rise or fall. MoneyHelper explains the distinction in its guide to falling pension-pot values: Why has my pension pot gone down in value?

How a market fall reaches a DC pension
Funds own assets whose prices move
Your pension provider normally invests contributions in one or more funds. Those funds may hold shares, bonds, property or other assets. Shares are typically higher risk and bonds typically lower risk, but neither category is guaranteed to rise or preserve your capital. If the assets’ market values fall, the fund’s unit price can fall and your pot’s displayed value can fall with it.
The fall may be broad, affecting many markets, or concentrated in a particular region, sector or asset type. The effect on your account depends on what your chosen fund holds. Two people with the same contribution history can see different changes if their funds have different allocations.
Your statement is a snapshot
A provider statement records a valuation at a specified date. Between statements, prices can move in either direction. A lower number than last year tells you what the pot was worth at the valuation date; it does not by itself establish the amount you will have when you retire.

Future contributions buy units at the prices available when they are invested. When prices are lower, a fixed contribution buys more units than it would at a higher price; when prices are higher, it buys fewer. That purchasing pattern is an automatic consequence of regular investing, not a guarantee that prices will recover.

Investment and administration charges reduce the value of a DC pot over time. Their effect is separate from market movement, although both appear in the account’s changing value. Compare the charges shown for your fund or plan with the services and investment approach you are receiving, and check whether any charges apply when changing funds or taking money.
Why the date you need the money matters
Still accumulating with years ahead
If you are not taking money and retirement is many years away, a fall leaves time for further market movements before you need the pot. Prices may rise, remain lower or fall further; no source can tell you when or whether a recovery will occur. A temporary-looking fall can become permanent for money that is withdrawn during the downturn, while money left invested remains exposed to future gains and losses.
Close to retirement
Someone planning to start taking benefits soon has less time to wait through a fall. A lower pot may affect the income that can be supported, the amount available as a lump sum, or the choices offered by the provider. This is why the fund’s intended retirement date and risk design matter when you assess a recent valuation.
Already withdrawing income
Withdrawals from an invested pension generally require the provider to sell units, unless cash already held is used. If a unit price falls, you need to sell more units to raise the same cash amount. For example, if a withdrawal requires 100 units at one price and the price later halves, the same withdrawal would require 200 units, before allowing for charges.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Those extra units are no longer invested. If prices later rise, fewer units participate in that rise. Repeated withdrawals during a downturn can therefore reduce the pot more severely than a fall alone, particularly early in retirement. This interaction between market returns and withdrawals is why a withdrawal plan cannot be judged from a single percentage fall.

MoneyHelper discusses ways of planning retirement income, including a mixture of selling investments, using investments that generate income and holding cash: How to invest pensions in retirement. These are choices to evaluate against your circumstances, not a universal allocation or a promise of a particular outcome.
What lifestyle and target-date funds do—and do not do
Some default, lifestyle or target-date funds automatically change their asset mix as a selected retirement date approaches. They may reduce exposure to assets expected to be more volatile and increase exposure to assets intended to be steadier or easier to use for near-term withdrawals.
Automatic risk changes are based on the retirement date and retirement method assumed by the fund. A fund designed for buying an annuity may not be designed for someone who expects to keep investments and draw an income. Check the fund factsheet or provider information for:
- the retirement date the strategy assumes;
- when and how its asset mix changes;
- whether it targets cash, an annuity purchase or continued investment;
- the charges and investment risks that remain after the change.
Automatic switching does not remove investment risk. It also cannot make a recovery certain or ensure that the selected retirement date matches your actual plans. MoneyHelper’s overview of fund choices explains the main options and considerations: Pension investment options: an overview.
Cash reduces market exposure but introduces inflation risk
Holding some money in cash can reduce the chance that a market fall immediately affects that portion and can help avoid selling investments at depressed prices to meet a planned withdrawal. Cash is not risk-free in real terms: if prices rise faster than the cash return, its purchasing power falls.
Lower-volatility assets can also have lower growth potential than higher-risk investments. The relevant comparison is not simply “safe versus risky”; consider how much volatility and loss you can tolerate, how long the money must last, the income you need and the charges on each option. Do not assume that moving everything to cash protects a long retirement from inflation.

A practical check after your pension value falls
- Confirm the arrangement. Establish whether the account is DC, DB, a personal pension, a workplace plan or another arrangement. Ask the provider or administrator if the documents use unfamiliar terms.
- Record what changed. Note the valuation date, the previous valuation, contributions paid, charges deducted and any withdrawals. A change caused by a contribution or transaction is different from a change caused by investment prices.
- Identify the current fund. For a DC plan, find the fund name, asset mix, risk description, charges and any default, lifestyle or target-date features. Do not infer the holdings from the fund’s name alone.
- Match the fund to the timetable. Write down when you expect to need the money and whether withdrawals will begin soon. The same short-term fall has a different practical meaning for a person adding contributions for decades and a person selling units next month.
- Review the withdrawal method. If you are taking income, identify which assets or units are sold, how often sales occur and whether the plan still covers essential spending under less favourable returns. A single “sustainable” percentage is not a guarantee.
- Check fees and transaction rules. Read the plan’s charges, switching costs, withdrawal fees and any restrictions. A change that looks attractive before costs may be less useful after them.
- Pause before an irreversible decision. Transferring, changing funds or taking a large withdrawal can have tax, benefit and investment consequences. Use appropriate guidance or regulated financial advice before making a consequential change. MoneyHelper cautions that panic-driven changes can be costly.
How to compare investment approaches
If you are comparing funds or approaches, use the same questions for each option rather than chasing the latest performance figure.
| Question | Why it matters | Evidence to check |
|---|---|---|
| How much can the value fluctuate? | Higher volatility can produce larger falls before money is needed | Risk description, asset allocation and the possibility of capital loss |
| What growth is possible? | Long retirements may require growth to keep pace with spending and inflation | Investment objective and reasonable range of outcomes; no growth figure is guaranteed |
| When is the money needed? | A shorter horizon gives less time to wait through a fall | Planned retirement date and dates for lump sums or income |
| How will withdrawals be funded? | Selling units during a fall can permanently reduce the units left invested | Cash reserve, income-producing assets, scheduled sales and flexibility to vary withdrawals |
| What does it cost? | Charges reduce the pot regardless of market direction | Fund, platform, administration, advice and transaction charges |
| Does automatic de-risking fit? | A strategy built for one retirement method may not suit another | Assumed date, target outcome and timing of asset-mix changes |
| What is the inflation exposure? | Cash and low-volatility assets may lose purchasing power | Expected spending increases and the return after inflation |
Common mistakes after a market fall
Confusing a valuation with a final loss
A lower DC valuation is real at that date, but it is not the final result unless the investments are sold at that value. Treating every statement as a guaranteed outcome can lead to decisions based on a snapshot.
Assuming recovery is guaranteed
Past recoveries do not prove that a particular fund, market or asset will recover, or indicate when it might do so. Any plan should allow for further falls and disappointing returns.
Ignoring the withdrawal sequence
Two retirees can have the same average return over a period yet different outcomes if one sells more units during early falls. Review the sequence of withdrawals and the assets used to fund them, not only the fund’s headline return.
Moving everything to cash without a plan
Cash can reduce short-term volatility, but inflation can erode buying power and the lower expected growth may make a long retirement harder to fund. A move should be assessed against the date money is needed and the income required.
Changing a DB pension as though it were a DC pot
A DB promise and a transfer value are different. Do not assume that a change in a quoted transfer value means the scheme has reduced the pension income promised under its rules. Transfers are significant decisions requiring appropriate regulated advice where required.

What the fall means in three typical situations
Long-term saver, no withdrawals
The immediate effect is a lower current DC valuation. Contributions continue to buy units at prevailing prices, and the eventual outcome depends on future returns, charges and contributions. There is no reliable timetable for a recovery.
Person approaching retirement
The shorter timetable makes the fall more consequential because there may be less opportunity to wait. Check whether the fund’s automatic risk changes match the retirement date and whether the planned use is a lump sum, annuity, drawdown or another option.
Person already drawing income
The key issue is how much must be sold to meet withdrawals and how many units remain afterward. Reassess the withdrawal plan, cash needs and investment mix; avoid assuming that one market movement determines the entire retirement.
When to seek help
General information cannot determine the right fund, withdrawal rate or transfer decision for an individual. Consider guidance or regulated financial advice before changing investments, transferring a DB pension, taking a large withdrawal, or making a decision that could affect tax or benefits. Have your scheme type, fund details, charges, retirement date and planned withdrawals ready so the discussion addresses the actual decision.
