What happens to online-only games when their servers shut down?

When an online-only game’s required servers shut down, the result can range from losing specific online features to being unable to launch, authenticate, download, install or play the game at all. The outcome depends on what the servers do, whether the publisher offers an offline or community-hosted replacement, and the law and contract that apply to your purchase. A shutdown alone does not create an automatic refund right.

What “online-only” really means

Online-only is a practical dependency, not a label reserved for multiplayer games. A title that looks like a solo campaign may still contact a publisher-controlled service to verify a licence, load a profile, run anti-cheat checks, save progress, deliver missions or calculate game state. If that required service disappears, local files on a console or computer may no longer be enough.

Authentication-only dependency

Some games perform most computation on the player’s device but require a sign-in or licence check at launch. A shutdown of the authentication service can therefore block the entire game, even when no other player was involved.

Server-run gameplay

In a cloud-rendered or server-authoritative design, the publisher’s machines run the simulation, store the world or relay every action. Closing those servers removes the core game rather than merely an optional mode.

Mixed designs

Many titles combine local and online parts. The campaign might remain usable while matchmaking, rankings, downloadable content, cloud saves or progression systems disappear. Conversely, a game can appear to have an offline mode that still fails because launch authentication is mandatory.

Possible outcomes after a shutdown

What the game requires Likely result when the service ends What determines the exact result
Optional online features only Single-player or local modes may continue; matchmaking, events, leaderboards or cloud functions stop. Whether the remaining modes can launch without an account or server check.
Authentication at launch The game may refuse to start even though its content is installed. Whether the publisher patches out the check or leaves an alternate licence path.
Server-authoritative gameplay Core play becomes unavailable; local files cannot recreate the service by themselves. Whether a replacement server, peer-to-peer mode or offline conversion is released.
Online distribution required Owners may lose the ability to download or reinstall the title after a licence is revoked or a store listing is removed. The seller’s licence records, platform policy and whether an existing download remains supported.

These are patterns, not guarantees. A partial feature loss and total inaccessibility are different events, so check the publisher’s shutdown notice and title-specific testing rather than assuming every game follows the same path.

The Crew: a documented total-access example

The Crew illustrates the most severe outcome. The game was sold until December 2023, according to a 2024 written question in the European Parliament. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s March 2025 digital-platform-services inquiry report says the publisher revoked digital licences in April 2024. After that revocation, users could no longer download, install or play the game. The report says the publisher cited server-infrastructure and licensing constraints.

This case should not be generalized to every shutdown. It demonstrates that delisting, licence revocation and server dependence can combine to remove access even for people who had previously downloaded the game. Another title might leave an installed campaign playable, or might receive a patch that removes the online requirement.

Shutdown, delisting and licence revocation are different

Delisting

Delisting removes a title from new sales. It does not, by itself, prove that existing owners lose the ability to download or play it. The platform may continue to provide redownloads and servers for an announced period.

Server shutdown

A server shutdown ends one or more services. If those services are optional, only connected features may disappear. If they handle authentication or the game simulation, the effect can be total.

Licence revocation

Revoking a digital licence can remove the account’s entitlement to download or launch the software. The The Crew report is an example in which revocation was followed by loss of download, installation and play.

Read the notice for the specific title: it should state the final date, affected platforms, remaining offline modes, treatment of downloadable content and whether a refund process exists.

What happens technically when the service is turned off

  1. Endpoint removal: launchers, consoles or game clients begin receiving connection errors because the authentication, matchmaking or content endpoint no longer responds.
  2. Credential and licence checks fail: a client that requires a current token cannot establish that the account is entitled to start the game.
  3. Remote state disappears: profiles, inventories, saves, economies or event schedules stored on the publisher’s systems become inaccessible.
  4. Security dependencies break: anti-cheat or integrity services may reject the client when their verification servers are gone.
  5. Distribution can end separately: if a store entitlement is revoked, reinstalling may fail even if some files remain on a drive.

Owning a physical disc, a console or a computer does not restore a publisher’s unavailable authentication or gameplay service. Hardware can preserve local data, but it cannot recreate a remote account system or server-operated world without an authorised replacement.

Can a publisher keep the game playable?

The European Commission’s 2026 assessment of discontinued video games identifies several possible transition paths. They are technically and legally contingent options, not a universal duty.

Offline conversion

A patch can move saves, progression and game logic onto the player’s device and remove mandatory sign-in. This is easiest when the client already contains the necessary content and does not depend on confidential server logic. It may still require changes to anti-cheat, downloadable content and platform certification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Self-hosted servers

The publisher can provide server software so players or communities run their own instances. Hosting costs, moderation, security updates and operating-system support then shift away from the original infrastructure. A self-hosted option may preserve multiplayer without preserving official matchmaking or account economies.

Peer-to-peer connections

Peer-to-peer networking can let players connect directly rather than through a central game server. It does not automatically solve authentication, cheating, matchmaking, discovery or network-address privacy, and some game designs cannot be converted cleanly.

Source-code and asset release

Releasing code and assets could allow a community to maintain a title, but copyright, licences for third-party technology, trademarks, personal data, trade secrets and anti-cheat know-how can prevent or limit release. The Commission lists these intellectual-property and confidentiality issues among the relevant constraints.

What the law says about continued access

The European Commission’s June 2026 assessment states: “EU consumer protection legislation does not set specific requirements for the duration of the supply of digital content and services, including online video games, nor does it require traders to ensure that consumers can continue using digital content and services once their commercial supply has ended.” In practical terms, EU law does not promise that every online game will remain playable indefinitely after commercial support ends.

That statement is general EU context, not a decision about an individual purchase and not a rule for every country. Contract terms, the seller, the platform, the purchase date, the way the service was advertised and the reason for the shutdown can all matter.

Conformity and reasonable expectations

The same Commission assessment explains that EU rules can provide remedies when digital content or services fail to conform to the contract or to what consumers could reasonably expect. In some circumstances, a proportionate price reduction or refund may be available. Eligibility depends on the facts; a shutdown does not make every buyer automatically entitled to all money back.

Store policies are not universal law

A digital PC-store policy published by Ubisoft says its terms do not override statutory refund rights and gives a standard condition of 14 days from purchase with no more than two hours played for eligible purchases through that store. This is a policy example, not a shutdown-specific promise and not a rule for other retailers, platforms or regions. Always identify the seller that processed the transaction and read that seller’s current policy.

How to assess your own situation

  1. Identify the dependency. Check whether the game needs a server for launch authentication, saving, core simulation, anti-cheat or only optional features.
  2. Read the official notice. Record the announced shutdown date, affected platforms, download and reinstall rules, and any promised patch or compensation.
  3. Separate access problems. Test an already-installed copy offline, then test a fresh installation if the platform permits it. A failure to matchmake is not proof that the whole game is unusable; a launch-authentication error is stronger evidence of total loss.
  4. Gather transaction details. Keep the receipt, seller name, platform, purchase date, edition, downloadable-content purchases and relevant account messages.
  5. Check the applicable jurisdiction. Consumer rights differ by country and can depend on whether the seller or publisher supplied the digital service.
  6. Ask for the specific remedy. Contact the seller first, describe the exact loss of functionality and request the remedy available under its policy or applicable law. Keep the response in writing.

Preserving a game before support ends

  • Install updates while they are still distributed, and keep a lawful local backup of game files where the platform permits it.
  • Export saves or screenshots of account information if the game provides an official export function.
  • Read the end-of-service notice for an offline patch, server software or community-support instructions.
  • Do not bypass authentication, copy protected code or redistribute assets in ways that violate the licence or local law. Contract terms can restrict copying, adaptation and reverse engineering, subject to permissions in the licence and applicable law.
  • Save proof of purchase and correspondence if you may need to pursue a consumer complaint.

These steps can preserve evidence and locally available data; they cannot guarantee future playability when the game fundamentally depends on a remote service.

What policy may change next

In June 2026, the European Commission announced engagement with the video-game industry and consumer representatives following a European citizens’ initiative concerning disabled games. The announcement describes dialogue and existing consumer-law safeguards. It does not establish a new universal EU requirement that publishers make every discontinued game playable. Because policy can change, readers should check the Commission’s latest position for the date and country that apply to them.

A practical decision framework

Question If the answer is yes If the answer is no
Does launch require a publisher authentication service? Expect a possible complete lockout unless an offline patch or alternate licence check is supplied. Proceed to test whether core gameplay itself contacts a server.
Does core gameplay run on the publisher’s servers? Local files alone will not reproduce the game; look for an authorised replacement service. Offline modes may survive, subject to saves and other checks.
Has the publisher announced offline conversion, self-hosting or peer-to-peer support? Follow the announced migration steps and note their deadlines and platform limits. Do not assume the community can legally or technically restore the service.
Was the game bought recently from a particular seller? Check that seller’s refund window and statutory-rights information, then document the shutdown’s effect. Older purchases may require a conformity or reasonable-expectations argument, which is fact-specific.

The bottom line for players

An online-only game does not automatically vanish the moment a server is announced for retirement, but it can become partly or completely unusable. The decisive facts are the server’s role, the publisher’s end-of-life plan and the licence and consumer rules tied to your transaction. Treat each shutdown as a title-specific event: distinguish delisting from service closure, verify whether offline play actually works, preserve your records, and pursue any refund or other remedy through the relevant seller and jurisdiction rather than assuming a universal entitlement.
