What Happens to Oil Prices and Shipping if Tensions Around Iran Escalate?

If an escalation disrupts tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices and shipping costs would likely rise—but the size and duration of the effects would depend on how many barrels were delayed and how long the disruption lasted. The strait carries a large share of global oil flows, while alternative Gulf export routes can replace only part of that volume. Even without a lasting loss of supply, vessel risk, insurance costs and ships unable to leave the Gulf can tighten tanker availability and push freight rates higher.

Why the Strait of Hormuz matters to oil markets

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the wider ocean shipping network. Oil moving through it includes crude and petroleum products bound for global markets, so a disruption can affect both the availability of oil and the movement of tankers.

The scale depends on the period and measure used. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that flows averaged 20 million barrels per day in 2024—about 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption—in a June 2025 analysis. EIA also reported an average of 20.9 million barrels per day in the first half of 2025, equal to about one-quarter of global maritime-traded oil. The International Energy Agency (IEA) put 2025 Hormuz oil flows at 20 million barrels per day, around 25% of seaborne oil trade, in a factsheet last updated in February 2026. These figures use different periods and denominators; they show the strait’s importance, not a guaranteed amount that would disappear in any future crisis.

Alternative routes provide only a partial substitute

The IEA estimated in February 2026 that available capacity to export crude from the Gulf by alternative routes was 3.5 to 5.5 million barrels per day, compared with nearly 20 million barrels per day of oil exports through Hormuz in 2025. Some oil can be rerouted, but that capacity does not replace normal strait flows. The actual amount redirected in a crisis would depend on which routes and facilities were available and how quickly shippers could use them.

How escalation could affect oil prices

Crude prices respond to expected future supply as well as oil already missing from the market. If traders think a disruption could last, they may bid up oil before the full physical shortfall is clear. Prices can also fall or give back gains when traffic resumes, more supply becomes available, or demand weakens. Inventories, alternative supply and the type of oil or product affected all influence the response.

There is no reliable fixed price increase for a given number of barrels disrupted. A short-lived delay that is quickly cleared is different from an extended interruption that reduces exports for weeks or longer; even similar physical disruptions can occur under different inventory, demand and market conditions. The evidence does not support a precise price target for a hypothetical future escalation.

What the 2026 market episode shows—and what it does not

In its July 15, 2026 account of second-quarter markets, EIA reported that Brent front-month futures ranged from $72 per barrel on June 26 to $118 per barrel on April 29. It attributed high volatility in part to uncertainty about reopening. EIA also reported that the average daily Brent price swing in April and May 2026 was $4 per barrel, compared with $1 per barrel in the same months of 2025. Those are observations from that episode, not forecasts or a template for the size of a future price move.

Why tanker freight and insurance can rise separately from crude

Oil prices and tanker shipping costs are related, but they are not the same market. A security threat can make voyages through or near a risk area more dangerous, raise war-risk insurance costs and lead owners to avoid or delay trips. Those changes can raise the cost of moving a cargo even if the underlying crude-price move is smaller or short-lived.

A further pressure comes from vessel availability. In its March 26, 2026 analysis, EIA said loaded ships confined in the Persian Gulf reduced the effective supply of tankers available elsewhere. EIA reported that Middle East-to-Asia very large crude carrier (VLCC) rates reached their highest level since at least November 2005, when the cited series began. Physical danger, higher insurance costs and fewer available ships can therefore reinforce one another.

Freight rates are not a direct proxy for the price of crude. The rate for a tanker voyage reflects vessel supply, route, timing, cargo and risk. Insurance is another cost, and an actual quote depends on the voyage and coverage; the cited EIA account does not establish a current insurance price.

How a brief disruption differs from a prolonged one

Factor Brief disruption, followed by rapid traffic resumption Prolonged disruption that materially reduces Gulf exports
Oil supply Delays could be cleared as vessels resume transit. The amount of oil ultimately lost or delayed is not established in advance. A sustained reduction in exports would leave more barrels unavailable for longer; the impact depends on the volume affected and the time needed to restore flows.
Bypass routes Some exports may be redirected, subject to route availability and the IEA’s estimated 3.5–5.5 million barrels per day of available alternative crude-export capacity. Alternative routes remain only a partial substitute for the nearly 20 million barrels per day of 2025 oil exports through Hormuz, according to the IEA.
Tankers and insurance Risk premiums, delays and vessel positioning could raise costs temporarily; the scale is not established for a future event. Ships kept in the Gulf for longer could reduce availability elsewhere, while sustained risk could keep insurance and freight costs elevated. No future rate or premium is established.
Market response Prices may react to the threat and then ease as traffic resumes, depending on expectations, inventories, supply and demand. A lasting physical shortfall could sustain upward pressure, but inventories, alternative supply and demand reduction could moderate it. There is no fixed price outcome.

Why demand and reopening can limit the impact

Higher prices and reduced availability can prompt consumers and businesses to cut use, while governments may take measures to curb demand. In its June 9, 2026 outlook, EIA said those forces were curbing demand, particularly in Asia, and could limit price increases. That same outlook projected a 1.1 million barrels per day decline in global oil demand in 2026 compared with 2025. It was a forecast published in June, not a final result for 2026.

Reopening can change expectations as well as physical flows. In a July 7, 2026 forecast, EIA said increased traffic following the June 18 memorandum of understanding (MOU) would support a return of production and trade flows toward pre-conflict levels. That was a dated forecast tied to the developments known at the time; it should not be read as a current forecast for a future escalation.

What the effects could mean beyond oil markets

A rise in crude benchmarks does not translate one-for-one or immediately into the price at a fuel pump. Retail fuel prices also depend on refining, distribution, taxes, local supply and the timing of price changes. Likewise, higher tanker rates affect the cost of moving cargoes, but they do not by themselves establish the eventual retail price of any product.

For businesses that use fuel or rely on shipping, the relevant exposure depends on contracts, fuel purchasing, route, delivery timing and how quickly freight or fuel surcharges can change. The market indicators to distinguish are the crude benchmark, the tanker freight rate and the insurance cost—not a single headline figure that stands in for all three.
