That disappearance can reorganize the food web in two ways: fewer great whites remove a top predator, while the remaining animals also change their behavior because the perceived danger has gone. In South Africa’s False Bay, the documented result was a localized trophic cascade: white sharks vanished, Cape fur seals and sevengill sharks became more common, and some of the fishes and smaller sharks those predators eat declined.
This is not a rule that every ocean ecosystem will respond identically. The strongest evidence comes from observational studies in particular places, especially False Bay, with a separate California example showing a similar displacement of white sharks. The effects depend on which predators remain, how long the sharks are absent, and what environmental changes occur at the same time.

The South African sequence: from orca arrival to food-web change
South African National Parks (SANParks) linked visits by two shark-eating orcas, known as Port and Starboard, with the emigration of great white sharks from the Gansbaai aggregation. The site was eventually left without its usual white sharks for 2.5 years, according to a 2024 SANParks research summary. Bronze whaler sharks occupied part of the predator role that white sharks had previously filled.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The disappearance was not necessarily caused by fear alone. Five white-shark carcasses with their livers removed were found in 2017. SANParks identifies Port and Starboard as the likely predators and describes filmed attacks in which orcas held sharks semi-inverted and concentrated on the energy-rich liver. The behavior may exploit tonic immobility, a temporary state in which a shark becomes unusually still when turned upside down, but that explanation remains a possibility rather than a demonstrated mechanism for every attack.

At Seal Island in False Bay, a separate study compared conditions before and after the local decline in white sharks. It found changes at several levels of the ecosystem rather than only a change in shark counts.
Cape fur seals lost a major source of danger
When great whites were regularly present, Cape fur seals had to treat the water around Seal Island as a high-risk hunting environment. After the white-shark decline, the False Bay study reported lower seal stress and an increase in the distance at which seals rafted from the island. Rafting farther offshore would have exposed seals to attacks when white sharks were present, so the change is consistent with a release from predation risk.
This is a risk effect: the animals changed behavior and apparent physiological stress because the threat was reduced. It does not require every seal to be killed or spared. More time in open water can also change where seals forage and how much pressure they place on schooling fish.

Sevengill sharks expanded into a vacated predator niche
Boat surveys conducted before the white-shark loss did not record sevengill sharks at Seal Island. In the post-decline surveys analyzed by Hammerschlag, Herskowitz, Fallows and Couto (2025), sevengills averaged 0.96 ± 0.03 sightings per hour. Their appearance illustrates mesopredator release: a mid-level predator can become more abundant or visible when a larger apex predator no longer eats it, competes with it, or keeps it away from a favored area.

Sevengill sharks do not simply duplicate the ecological role of great whites. Their body size, hunting methods and prey preferences differ. Once they occupy the site, however, they can increase predation on smaller benthic sharks and other prey that were previously subject to less pressure.
Lower trophic levels changed as well
The same 2025 analysis found increases in seals and sevengill sharks coinciding with declines in small fishes eaten by seals and smaller sharks eaten by sevengills. The pattern is consistent with a cascade: removing or displacing one apex predator changes the abundance and behavior of other predators, which then alters their prey.
A cascade does not mean that every decline was caused by orcas. It means that the observed sequence is ecologically plausible and matches the way predator effects can propagate through a food web. False Bay covers nearly 1,000 square kilometers, and Seal Island may support as many as 60,000 Cape fur seals, so changes in predator behavior can operate over a large, productive system.
How an orca-driven cascade works
The process combines direct killing, movement decisions and indirect effects. The sequence below separates those mechanisms so they are not mistaken for one single cause.

- Orcas create lethal or perceived risk. A great white that is attacked can die; one that encounters the orcas may leave before being attacked. Repeated visits can make an aggregation site too dangerous to use.
- White sharks stop visiting or emigrate. The immediate ecological change is a local loss of the top predator. A regional decline in white sharks may have additional causes, so absence from one site should not automatically be treated as proof of total population loss.
- Prey relax their antipredator behavior. Seals can spend more time away from shore, alter rafting positions and forage under conditions they previously avoided. Reduced stress can change energy use and movement even before population numbers change.
- Other predators expand or become detectable. Sevengill sharks can use habitat from which white sharks formerly excluded them or consumed them. Bronze whalers filled part of the vacant predator role in the Gansbaai account.
- New predator pressure reaches lower levels. More seals can consume more schooling fish, while more sevengills can consume more smaller benthic sharks. Those prey changes can then affect competitors and the organisms that depend on them.
The Frontiers study authors emphasize that short-term shifts are likely to be driven substantially by altered antipredator behavior, not only by animals being removed through predation. That distinction matters: a food web can change quickly when animals move, hide less or forage in different places, even if births and deaths have not yet changed population size.
Consumptive effects versus risk effects
Consumptive effects: animals are removed
Consumptive effects occur when an orca kills a great white, or when a resulting increase in another predator leads to more prey being eaten. The liver-focused carcasses in 2017 are direct evidence that at least some white sharks were consumed in the South African events, although the total number of attacks is unknown.
Consumption can have a large effect when the victim is an apex predator. Losing several white sharks may remove not just their individual feeding but also their control over seals, sevengills and other competitors.
Risk effects: animals change what they do
Risk effects occur without a confirmed kill. A shark may avoid a site, and a seal may alter its distance from an island, route to feeding grounds or time in the water. These decisions can redistribute predation pressure across the ecosystem. A seal that forages in a new area may encounter different fish schools; a sevengill that enters a former white-shark refuge may encounter prey that had not previously faced much pressure.

Because behavior can change within days or weeks, risk effects often appear before population trends are clear. They are also harder to attribute: weather, prey distribution, fishing activity and visibility can alter where animals are observed at the same time.
What the South African and California cases show
| Comparison point | False Bay and Gansbaai, South Africa | Southeast Farallon Island, California |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Orca visits were associated with white-shark emigration; five carcasses with missing livers were found in 2017, with Port and Starboard identified as likely predators. | Electronic tagging and long-term observations showed killer-whale visits displacing white sharks. |
| Duration of shark absence | The Gansbaai aggregation was abandoned for 2.5 years, according to SANParks (2024). | A specific absence duration is not stated in the available account. |
| Prey behavior and physiology | Cape fur seals showed reduced stress and rafted farther from Seal Island after white sharks disappeared. | White-shark displacement redistributed their foraging pressure on northern elephant seals. |
| Replacement or released predators | Bronze whalers filled part of the vacated role at Gansbaai; sevengill sharks averaged 0.96 ± 0.03 sightings per hour after the decline at Seal Island. | The available account focuses on redistributed white-shark pressure rather than a quantified replacement mesopredator. |
| Lower food-web signal | Small fishes eaten by seals and smaller benthic sharks eaten by sevengills declined as those predators increased. | Possible cascading effects were identified, but the account does not provide a comparable lower-trophic measurement. |
| Strength of inference | Observational before-and-after comparison with only two BRUVS sampling periods and potential environmental confounders. | Tagging and long-term observation support displacement and redistribution, while the extent of a cascade remains less certain. |
The California example is important because it shows that the mechanism is not unique to South Africa: killer-whale visits can move white sharks and change where their pressure on prey is applied. It does not prove that the same seal, fish and mesopredator responses will occur in every region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the effect is local rather than universal
A trophic cascade depends on the community that remains after the top predator leaves. In False Bay, there were abundant Cape fur seals, a population of sevengill sharks capable of using the area, and prey species vulnerable to increased consumption. Another ecosystem might lack a replacement predator, have different prey, or experience environmental conditions that overwhelm the predator signal.

Scale also matters. An aggregation can be abandoned while white sharks remain elsewhere in the region. A local absence therefore says less about the global white-shark population than it does about how animals use a particular habitat. Similarly, an increase in sevengill sightings can indicate genuine expansion, greater activity in the survey area, or improved detectability; the measurement alone does not distinguish those possibilities.
Best Value
Duration changes the expected outcome. A brief orca visit may cause temporary avoidance with little population effect. Repeated visits over years can alter habitat use, predator composition and prey behavior enough to produce sustained food-web changes. The 2.5-year abandonment reported for Gansbaai is long enough for researchers to look for those broader effects, but it still does not establish that every observed trend came from orca activity.
What researchers can and cannot conclude from the False Bay study
What the evidence supports
- White sharks disappeared from the studied aggregation after shark-eating orcas became associated with the area.
- Some white sharks were probably killed, based on liver-less carcasses and observed orca behavior.
- Cape fur seals showed lower stress and changed rafting behavior after the white-shark decline.
- Sevengill sharks appeared in post-decline surveys at a measurable rate.
- Changes in seals and sevengills coincided with declines in parts of their prey base.
What remains uncertain
- The exact reason for the regional or local white-shark decline is not established; orca predation may contribute without being the sole cause.
- The study is observational, so it cannot eliminate all effects from oceanographic conditions, prey movements, fishing or other environmental drivers.
- Only two BRUVS sampling periods limit the strength of before-and-after comparisons.
- Survey detection is imperfect. More sightings can reflect more animals, more time in the area or a higher chance of detection.
- Coincident changes in seals, sevengills and small prey demonstrate a pattern, not a complete causal accounting of every species response.
These limitations do not make the cascade claim meaningless. They define its proper scope: False Bay provides a well-documented local example of apex-predator displacement followed by behavioral and food-web changes, not a universal forecast for all marine ecosystems.
How to interpret common questions
Do seals increase when great white sharks disappear?
In False Bay, Cape fur seals increased in the post-decline observations and showed lower stress, but the evidence described here does not establish a single population-growth rate or prove that fewer shark kills alone caused the increase. Reduced predation risk and altered movement are the clearest documented responses.
What species replace great white sharks in South Africa?
At Gansbaai, SANParks reported bronze whaler sharks occupying the vacated predator role. At Seal Island, sevengill sharks appeared in post-decline surveys at 0.96 ± 0.03 sightings per hour. These are site-specific replacements or releases, not evidence that one species universally replaces white sharks.
Did the orcas change the whole marine food web?
They changed multiple links in the False Bay food web: white sharks disappeared, seals changed behavior and abundance, sevengills became more common, and some prey declined. Calling this a whole-food-web change is reasonable for that local system, but the size and direction of effects elsewhere remain context-dependent.
Bottom line
Orcas can trigger more than a shark-versus-orca encounter. By killing or frightening great white sharks away, they remove a top predator and release behavioral constraints on seals and other sharks. In False Bay, that combination coincided with a localized trophic cascade reaching small fishes and smaller benthic sharks. The result demonstrates how a novel apex predator can restructure an ecosystem, while the study’s observational limits caution against treating the South African pattern as a universal law of the ocean.
