Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLocked tokens usually stay locked when a custody provider relationship ends. Closing the account ends (or winds down) the provider’s service; it does not override an issuer lock-up schedule, staking or unbonding period, token-contract restriction, lender control agreement, sanctions hold, or court order. You may be able to move the assets to a new custodian, but only after identifying every restriction, agreeing an eligible destination, completing the required notices, and allowing any protocol or legal delay.
The practical rule is simple: treat custody termination and token unlock as two separate events. The signed agreements and the token network’s rules determine what happens next.

Why ending custody does not automatically unlock tokens
A custody provider controls an account, wallet infrastructure, and operational services. A lock-up schedule or staking rule controls whether the asset may be transferred. Those are different layers of control, and one can end while the other remains active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Provider agreement: sets account closure, withdrawal, notice, fee, and recordkeeping procedures.
- Issuer lock-up schedule: prevents transfers until specified dates or conditions, often for employees, investors, grants, or other restricted holders.
- Token contract or protocol: can reject transfers or impose a vesting, timelock, or other on-chain condition.
- Staking terms: may keep assets immobilized through an unbonding or withdrawal period after a custody agreement ends.
- Lender or control agreement: can require a particular controller, destination, or consent before assets move.
- Law and official orders: sanctions, subpoenas, court orders, government directives, or other mandatory restrictions can delay or prevent a transfer.
Changing custodians therefore is not a way to bypass an issuer or protocol restriction. The new custodian must be able to hold the token, and the restriction must remain enforceable during the transition.

What the contracts may require
There is no single industry-wide deadline or release procedure. Filed agreements show several different approaches. They are examples of drafting, not universal rules for every customer or token.
| Situation | Example contractual treatment | What it means for a transition |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer lock-up schedule ends or the schedule agreement terminates | An Anchorage form requires the client and token issuer to agree on a destination account or wallet and give written notice at least three business days before the termination date. If notice is missing, transfers remain restricted until notice is received or the scheduled unlock occurs. | Ending the custody relationship does not cancel the issuer’s restrictions. A destination and advance notice are part of the release process. |
| General custody account closure | One filed agreement requires withdrawal within 90 days, subject to legal exceptions, and describes custody continuing until transfer or up to 180 days after closure or termination in the specified circumstances. A public BitGo agreement likewise says assets should be withdrawn within 90 days unless law prohibits. | A 90-day or 180-day period is a contract-specific process window, not proof that a token is unlocked or transferable. |
| Assets already staked | Aegis Trust’s filed staking terms continue for assets already staked for as long as those assets remain locked, even though the general terms otherwise end with the custody agreement. | Staking and network unbonding rules must be reviewed separately from the custody termination date. |
| Network fees and transfer directions | The Anchorage terms assign network fees to the client and allow a transfer direction with an insufficient fee to be canceled. | Keep the required fee available and confirm who is responsible for funding and resubmitting a failed transfer. |
| Legal or compliance restriction | Examples allow restrictions where applicable law, sanctions, subpoenas, court orders, or government orders apply. BitGo describes commercially reasonable efforts to allow withdrawal after written request, subject to legal limits. | A contractual withdrawal right can be delayed or constrained by an external order; it is not an unconditional guarantee. |
Can you transfer locked tokens to a new custodian?
Possibly, but only if the transfer is permitted by the lock, the protocol, the relevant agreements, and applicable law. A new custodian cannot make an asset transferable merely by accepting it. In some arrangements the destination must be approved by both the client and the issuer, and the new provider may need to agree to preserve the same restrictions.
When a transfer is usually workable
- The issuer or protocol permits a transfer to an approved account before the unlock date.
- The client and issuer have selected a destination that can custody the token and enforce the remaining restrictions.
- The provider received the required written instruction in the required format and before the contractual deadline.
- The destination address has been screened, whitelisted, or otherwise accepted where the arrangement requires it.
- Staking has been withdrawn or the network’s unbonding period has completed.
- No legal, sanctions, lender, or control-party hold blocks the move.
When the transfer may be refused or delayed
- The destination notice was late, incomplete, or not mutually approved.
- The token remains under an issuer lock-up or on-chain timelock.
- The asset is still staked and the network has not completed unbonding.
- The new custodian does not support the token, the restriction, or the required control structure.
- Network fees are missing or the transfer instruction specifies an insufficient fee.
- A law-enforcement, sanctions, court, subpoena, or government order applies.
What the Anchorage lock-up example says
One filed Anchorage Lock-Up Schedule Agreement illustrates how a provider can handle a relationship that ends while assets remain restricted. It states:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“No later than three (3) business days prior to the termination date, Client and Token Issuer shall provide written notice to Anchorage at [email protected] of an account or wallet address(es) mutually agreed upon by Client and Token Issuer to which Restricted Assets subject to the Lock-Up Schedule as of the termination date shall be transferred, and Client agrees to work with Token Issuer in good faith to do so.”

Under that example, failure to provide the address does not release the tokens. Anchorage restricts transfers until it receives the required notice or the assets become eligible under the schedule. The clause also shows why the client, issuer, and custodian need to coordinate: an address chosen by the client alone may not satisfy the agreement.
The Anchorage account terms also describe the custodian holding the private keys. The client does not have a right to receive those keys simply because the relationship is ending. The operational outcome is a controlled transfer or continued custody under the contract, not a handover of key material.
How staking changes the timeline
Staked assets are not the same as idle assets held in custody. A staking addendum may survive termination for positions that are already delegated or otherwise locked. The Aegis Trust example keeps its staking terms in force for as long as those assets remain locked.
Check the network’s unbonding process
Each network defines its own withdrawal, cooldown, or unbonding behavior. A custody provider may have to submit an unstake request first, wait for the protocol’s period to finish, and then transfer the resulting balance. The custody termination date does not shorten that protocol period.

Separate principal, rewards, and pending requests
Ask for a position-level statement showing what is actively staked, what is pending unbonding, what rewards are claimable, and what is already liquid. These categories may follow different instructions and dates. Do not assume that a displayed account balance is immediately transferable.
Read the exit clauses before giving notice
Gather the executed custody agreement and every document that can affect movement of the token. At minimum, locate:
- The account-termination and withdrawal sections.
- Any lock-up schedule, issuer support agreement, vesting schedule, or transfer restriction.
- Staking terms, network-specific addenda, and unbonding provisions.
- Lender, pledge, control, or security agreements.
- Fee schedules, address-whitelisting rules, and instruction-format requirements.
- Applicable law, sanctions, subpoena, and suspension clauses.
Look for words such as “termination date,” “closure,” “withdrawal period,” “restricted assets,” “eligible destination,” “staked,” and “legal or regulatory hold.” A headline promise to withdraw within 90 days may be qualified by an exception that allows custody to continue when law or an order prevents delivery.

Transition checklist: a controlled, documented move
- Confirm the effective date. Obtain written confirmation of the termination or closure date from the current custodian. Distinguish notice date, last-instruction date, and actual service end date.
- Inventory each restriction. Map every token and lot to its issuer schedule, unlock date, staking status, lender control, and applicable protocol rule. Do not treat a single account balance as one unrestricted asset.
- Identify the authorized instructing parties. The Anchorage form recognizes client directions and, in defined contexts, directions from specified service providers, control parties, and token issuers. Your agreement may allocate authority differently.
- Select and validate the destination. Confirm that the new custodian supports the exact token and network, can preserve the lock, and accepts any issuer or control-party requirements. Verify the address character by character through an approved channel.
- Obtain issuer approval where required. If the schedule requires mutual agreement, have both the client and issuer approve the destination in writing. A client-only instruction may be rejected.
- Meet the notice deadline. In the Anchorage example, written notice is due no later than three business days before the termination date and is sent to the address specified in the agreement. Other contracts may require different timing or a different channel.
- Resolve staking and unbonding. Decide whether to leave the position under the existing arrangement until it unlocks, start an unstake request, or transfer only the liquid portion. Record the protocol request and expected completion condition.
- Fund fees and test operational readiness. Confirm the network fee asset, the payer, any minimum balance, and what happens if a fee is insufficient. Keep enough fee currency available before issuing the final instruction.
- Screen for legal holds. Ask whether sanctions screening, subpoenas, court orders, government orders, or other compliance restrictions affect the account. Request the legal basis and release condition in writing when a hold is asserted.
- Execute and reconcile. Obtain the transaction hash or equivalent transfer record, verify receipt at the destination, and reconcile the remaining locked and liquid balances against the custodian’s statement.
- Preserve the file. Keep the signed agreements, amendments, schedules, destination approvals, notices, account statements, staking records, transaction identifiers, and fee records. These documents establish what was authorized and when.
Common failure modes and fixes
The custodian says the account is closed but the tokens did not move
Account closure may stop ordinary services without making restricted assets transferable. Check whether the destination notice was delivered, whether the issuer approved it, and whether the lock-up date has arrived. Ask for the exact clause or operational reason for the restriction rather than assuming a technical error.

The destination address was rejected
Common causes include an unsupported network, an address that is not whitelisted, missing issuer or control-party approval, or a destination that cannot preserve the restriction. Reconfirm the token standard, network, ownership, and approval chain before submitting a replacement address.
A transfer was canceled for fees
Review the fee schedule and the instruction record. The Anchorage example places network fees on the client and allows cancellation where the specified fee is insufficient. Replenish the fee asset, obtain a fresh estimate, and follow the provider’s resubmission process.
Staked assets remain unavailable after termination
Review the staking addendum and the protocol’s unbonding state. A position can remain governed by staking terms after the general custody agreement ends. Request a position report that identifies the unbonding request, current status, and event that makes the balance transferable.

A legal or sanctions hold blocks withdrawal
Do not attempt to route around the hold through another wallet or custodian. Obtain written confirmation of the restriction, the authority imposing it, and the documents or event required for release. A provider may be able to use commercially reasonable efforts, but it cannot promise a transfer that law forbids.

Questions to put in writing
Send the custodian, issuer, and incoming provider a single coordinated request that asks for:
- The exact termination date and the last date for instructions.
- The remaining balance subject to each lock-up schedule and each unlock date.
- The liquid, staked, unbonding, and pending-reward balances.
- The approved destination account or wallet and the parties who must approve it.
- The required notice wording, delivery method, and deadline.
- All network, custody, conversion, and administrative fees and the required fee currency.
- Any legal, sanctions, subpoena, court, government, lender, or control-party restriction.
- The records that will be delivered after transfer and the retention period for account history.
Written answers reduce the risk that a verbal assurance is later contradicted by a schedule or addendum.
What you should not assume
- A custody provider’s termination notice is not an unlock notice.
- A 90-day withdrawal period is not an industry standard and does not prove transferability.
- A 180-day continuation clause applies only in the circumstances stated in the particular agreement.
- A new custodian can bypass issuer, protocol, staking, lender, or legal restrictions.
- The client can obtain the old custodian’s private keys as part of the exit.
- An address supplied by the client alone is sufficient where issuer or control-party approval is required.
- Assets shown in one account balance are all in the same legal or technical status.
Bottom line for a custody-provider transition
Locked tokens do not automatically unlock when custody ends. The provider relationship may terminate while issuer lock-ups, protocol timelocks, staking unbonding, lender controls, or legal holds continue. Review the signed documents, identify the authorized parties, agree and validate the destination, satisfy notice deadlines, fund fees, resolve staking status, and obtain written confirmation of every remaining restriction. Only then should the transfer be scheduled. The cited agreements demonstrate possible procedures, but your outcome is controlled by your own contracts, the token’s current rules, and applicable law.
