The outcome depends on the publisher’s terms, the kind of purchase, where you bought it, the shutdown circumstances, and consumer law where you live. A platform’s ordinary refund policy and a claim based on a service closing are related but separate questions.
What happens to purchased items and unused currency?
Many publishers describe virtual items as limited rights to use content through a game or account—not permanent ownership. If the game or account closes, those rights may end and items, currency, or other entitlements may become inaccessible. A publisher’s terms may also reserve the right to change or remove virtual items.

For example, Supercell’s terms describe virtual items as a limited, personal, revocable right and reserve the ability to modify or eliminate them. Its store policy says unused virtual items are not compensated when an account closes, except where applicable law requires otherwise. That is Supercell’s contractual position, not a rule that automatically applies to every game. Supercell Terms of Service and Store Refund and Cancellation Policy.
Whether an item was consumed, delivered but unused, or part of an unspent currency balance can matter. So can whether the purchase was a cosmetic, a consumable, a season pass, a subscription, or the game itself. Check the shutdown notice for the final playable date, whether purchases have stopped, whether balances can still be spent, and whether the publisher has offered a refund, credit, or transfer.

Does a game shutdown mean you get a refund?
No automatic refund follows from a shutdown. A storefront’s cancellation rules may address whether a transaction can be reversed—for example, whether digital content has already been delivered—without deciding every claim about a service ending. Conversely, a publisher’s no-refund wording may not settle the question if mandatory consumer law applies.
Storefront refund rules
For the United States, PlayStation’s cancellation policy generally says delivered in-game consumables cannot be refunded unless the content is faulty, while recognizing that local law may provide additional rights. Terms tied to an account or service
PlayStation’s U.S. terms say service-dependent virtual items and currency balances will not be retained or accessible after account termination, and provide no refund except as required by law or the agreement. This is an example of platform terms, not a universal outcome for every publisher or game. PlayStation Network Terms of Service (U.S.).

Consumer-law exceptions
Local consumer law can qualify contract terms. In a European Commission analysis dated 16 June 2026, the Commission said discontinuing digital content or a service sooner than a consumer could reasonably expect may constitute non-conformity. Under certain conditions, a proportionate refund may cover terminated ancillary purchases and currency that remains unspent. This is a conditional EU analysis, not a blanket promise of compensation to every player. The Commission’s discussion of the EU Digital Content Directive notes that it has applied since 1 January 2022; at the time of the analysis, the Commission said there were no Court of Justice of the European Union rulings providing a binding interpretation of its application, and planned to report on its review by the end of 2026. What can change the outcome?

How to check your options
- Gather the evidence. Save receipts, storefront transaction IDs, the shutdown announcement, and the terms that applied when you bought the item.
- Identify the seller and purchase channel. Check whether the charge went through the publisher, a console storefront, a mobile app store, or another seller. Start with the seller’s stated refund or complaint route.
- Read the closure details. Note the last-play date, whether purchases were disabled, whether you can still spend balances, and whether a refund, credit, or transfer was announced.
- Ask in writing. Contact the publisher and, where appropriate, the storefront. Ask specifically about unused currency, recently purchased items, subscriptions, and any transition offer. Keep copies of the response.
- Check local consumer protections. If the terms deny compensation, do not assume that wording overrides mandatory local law. For a specific dispute, consult the consumer-protection authority or qualified adviser in your jurisdiction.
Why the Fortnite refund program is not a general shutdown remedy
The FTC’s Fortnite refund program dealt with unwanted or unauthorized charges and related account restrictions, not compensation because a live-service game shut down. The FTC reported that 969,173 payments totaling more than $126 million were sent to eligible U.S. claimants in June 2025; the claims deadline has passed and no new claims are being accepted under that process. It is an example of a refund program for a defined billing-practices case, not a general precedent for recovering shutdown-related purchases. FTC Fortnite refunds.
