When a mobile game shuts down, you may lose access to server-stored progress and virtual items, but the outcome for purchases and personal data depends on the publisher’s notice, the transaction channel, and consumer law where you bought the game. A game can be removed from app stores first and remain playable for existing installations; the later server-closure date is usually what ends online play and access to cloud-saved progress.
There is no industry-wide promise that unused currency will be refunded or that an account can be exported. Some publishers create a formal, time-limited refund process; others deny refunds except where local law requires them. Data requests, refund claims, and account deletion can have different deadlines, so read the shutdown instructions before uninstalling the app or deleting your account.

Three dates determine what you can still do
Shutdown announcements often contain several different events. Treating “delisted” and “service terminated” as the same date is one of the most common causes of missed refunds and lost evidence.

For example, LINE:GUNDAM WARS announced separate dates for stopping new downloads, ending service, opening refund applications, closing the application period, and ending support. Existing players could continue until the service-closure date. The sequence in another game may be different, so use the dates in that game’s own notice rather than a general shutdown schedule.

What happens to purchases and virtual currency?
Buying an item does not guarantee permanent access
Most mobile-game purchases grant a license to use digital content while the service operates, not ownership of a transferrable object. The game’s terms can reserve the right to revoke or discontinue virtual items. Supercell’s terms, for instance, state that the company is not required to provide a refund for unused virtual items when an account closes, while also preserving statutory consumer rights. That clause describes Supercell’s contract, not a universal rule for every publisher or country.
Shutdown plans commonly distinguish paid currency from promotional currency and unused balances from currency already spent. A notice may also limit eligibility to a particular currency, region, account type, or purchase period. If the announcement does not expressly promise a refund, do not assume that the displayed balance has a cash value.

Publisher refunds and app-store refunds are different routes
A shutdown notice may provide its own form or support channel. That process can require the account holder to prove ownership, submit a balance recorded at a particular time, or accept a publisher-defined valuation. An Apple or Google Play refund request may be a separate process tied to the original store transaction. Submitting one does not automatically substitute for the other.

Google Play’s developer documentation explains that buyers can request refunds and that developers manage orders and refunds in Play Console, subject to the developer’s policy and applicable law. Apple’s developer guidance directs developers to Apple’s refund-request flow. Those platform procedures do not decide whether a shutdown-specific unused-currency claim qualifies. Follow the channel named in the game’s notice, then use the store’s process when the notice or transaction history directs you there.
What evidence to preserve
- Store receipts, order numbers, transaction dates, and the account email used for the purchase.
- A screenshot or written record of the paid-currency balance if the notice says the closing-time balance will be used.
- Your player ID, user name, server or region, and any account-recovery code shown in the app.
- The complete shutdown notice, refund terms, submitted form, and confirmation number.
Do not spend currency merely to avoid losing it if the notice says only unused paid currency qualifies. Conversely, do not assume a refund is available for a balance that the notice excludes.
What happens to progress?
Progress is game state: levels, characters, inventory, achievements, and other activity saved for your account. In an online game, that state is often stored on the publisher’s servers rather than solely on your phone. When those servers close, the app may stop authenticating, matchmaking, loading inventory, or opening your saved game.
Electronic Arts stated this plainly in its The Sims Mobile shutdown notice: “Because game progress is stored on our servers, saved data will no longer be available.” A locally installed app therefore is not a backup of cloud progress. Delisting can prevent a fresh download, but server closure is the event that can make the saved state inaccessible.

Some games may offer an offline mode or a final export, but neither is automatic. Look for explicit instructions about export files, screenshots, account migration, or a successor game. A transfer offered in one title, such as the case-specific Clash Mini arrangement, should not be treated as a general industry practice.
Player data is not the same as game progress
Personal data can include account identifiers, email addresses, support messages, device information, and purchase records. Progress is the playable state attached to the account. A publisher may delete one, retain another for legal or accounting reasons, or handle each through a different request form.
Data requests and deletion deadlines
Niantic’s Peridot sunset notice gave players a deadline to contact support for account data. Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS notice said account information would be deleted after end-of-service procedures. Those statements illustrate two separate questions: whether you can request a copy before a deadline and when the publisher will erase information afterward.

Why deletion can affect a refund
A refund claim may need the account record to verify ownership, identify paid currency, or match transactions. Rayark’s Soul of Eden notice warned that deleting personal data before a refund was completed could prevent processing because required information would be missing. Read refund and deletion instructions together; requesting deletion first can be incompatible with a pending claim.

- Find the official notice. Use the publisher’s in-game announcement, support page, or verified account. Record the purchase cutoff, delisting date, service-closure date, refund window, data-request deadline, and support end date.
- Identify your account. Copy the player ID, account name, linked login, region, and any recovery code. If the notice requires the original account holder, make sure the login still works.
- Check the balance and transaction history. Follow the notice’s path to the paid-currency screen. Record paid and promotional balances separately, and save store receipts and order IDs.
- Keep the installation intact until instructions are clear. Do not uninstall, switch devices, unlink the account, or delete data if the notice says the app or account is needed for verification. The FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS notice specifically cautioned against deleting the app or switching and reinstalling before its refund process ended.
- Submit the correct claim. Use the publisher’s shutdown form when one is provided. If the transaction route requires Apple or Google Play, submit that request as directed; do not assume a generic store request replaces a separate publisher application.
- Request data before the deadline. Ask for account information through the stated support or privacy channel and save the confirmation. A data request is separate from a refund request unless the notice explicitly combines them.
- Save proof of submission. Keep copies of the notice, screenshots, forms, emails, and support replies in a location you can access after the app closes.
- Check local law. If the publisher’s position conflicts with your expected rights, consult the consumer-protection authority or legal guidance for the country and purchase region. Entitlements depend on jurisdiction, transaction facts, and the applicable terms.
How to read a shutdown notice
Search the notice for precise terms rather than relying on the headline. “Paid currency” may exclude free bonuses. “Unused” may mean the balance at a specified closing time, not every amount ever purchased. “Refund” may require an application, identity verification, a minimum amount, or a particular payment route. “Account deletion” may refer to personal information while leaving legally required transaction records in place.
Confirm whether dates use local time, UTC, or a publisher headquarters’ time zone. A form that closes at midnight in one region can close hours earlier or later for you. Also check whether the notice applies globally or names particular countries, app-store editions, or payment methods.
If the game is already delisted
An existing installation may continue to open during a transition period, but this is not guaranteed. Avoid signing out or replacing the installation until you have captured your account ID and checked the notice. If the app no longer launches, gather store receipts and contact the support channel named in the announcement; provide the original account details rather than creating a new account that cannot be matched to the purchases.
If servers have already closed, local screenshots and receipts may be the only remaining record of your balance and transactions. They cannot restore server-side progress, but they can support a claim if the publisher keeps a post-closure process open or if local law provides a remedy.
The practical answer
You may lose access to online play and server-held progress when a mobile game’s servers close. You may or may not receive money for unused currency: the result depends on the shutdown plan, the currency type, your account and region, the application deadline, the store transaction, and local law. Personal-data access and deletion follow their own procedures and may not track the fate of your game progress.
Act before the earliest deadline: preserve identifiers and receipts, read the official notice, submit any publisher refund or data request through the specified channel, and avoid deleting the app or account until verification requirements are satisfied.
