Hellblade II is already released, but the future of Ninja Theory and its next game, Senua, is uncertain. On September 22, 2026, Xbox said two agreements to transfer the studio to new ownership had fallen through. It would begin consulting employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options. Xbox had not announced a completed closure or said that Senua was canceled.
Is Ninja Theory shutting down?
Not yet, based on Xbox’s latest formal statement. In an Xbox Wire update dated September 22, 2026, Xbox said two separate agreements to transfer Ninja Theory had fallen through. It said it would “begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.”

What has been reported about staff
On October 5, PC Gamer reported that multiple employees had posted the prior week that they had been let go or were at risk of losing their jobs. The report noted that UK consultation precedes actual layoffs, and that affected employees are not certain to be dismissed until the process concludes. These accounts do not establish a final staff count or prove that the studio has closed.

Hellblade II is already out
The proposed closure does not change the fact that Hellblade II was released in 2024. Xbox later announced a PlayStation 5 Standard Edition for August 12, 2025, at $49.99; the announcement did not specify whether it was a physical disc. That release is separate from the uncertain future of the studio and its next project.
Senua is a planned follow-up, not a confirmed release
Xbox introduced Senua in June 2026 as a new action-adventure set in the Hellblade universe, following the events of the first two games. It is a separate title, not a game announced as Hellblade III. Xbox’s June 7 announcement listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, and PlayStation 5, with inclusion in Game Pass, and gave 2027 as the planned release year.

That schedule is not a guarantee. Xbox’s September statement did not say what would happen to the game during or after the employee consultation, and it did not announce a cancellation. The available announcements leave the project’s status after the proposed-closure process unresolved.
What has been said about the new game?
In a June 7, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews described Senua as an action-adventure with more combat depth, puzzle-solving, exploration, and a larger interconnected world. The interview characterizes its map as roughly twice the size of Hellblade II’s, while describing the game as one map and a linear story with more freedom to explore. Those are developer descriptions of the planned game, not independent findings about a finished release.
