The store may keep trading and accept it, possibly with conditions; an administrator or buyer may refuse it; or the business may stop trading, leaving you to pursue a creditor claim that may recover little or nothing. The practical result depends on the country, the exact insolvency process, the administrator’s instructions and whether the original payer can use a payment-card remedy.
The outcome is conditional, not automatic
A gift card or store-credit note is a prepayment claim against the retailer. You have paid (or received value representing a payment) before the retailer supplied goods or services. Administration does not turn that balance into cash, replacement credit or a guaranteed right to shop.

There are four questions that determine what happens in a particular case:
- Is the retailer still trading under the administrator?
- Has the administrator announced that existing cards, vouchers or credit notes will be accepted?
- Has a purchaser acquired the business and agreed to assume those liabilities?
- If redemption fails, does the person who paid have a chargeback or other card-provider remedy?
“Administration,” “receivership” and “liquidation” are different legal processes, and terminology varies by country. A retailer can be in administration while stores and a website remain open, or it can stop trading quickly. A sale of the business, a change of owner and a completed liquidation are not interchangeable events. Read the named retailer’s current case announcement rather than relying on its ordinary gift-card policy.

Five possible paths for your balance
| What happens to the business | What may happen to the card or credit | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Trading continues under an administrator | The administrator may honour balances while the stores or website operate. | Check the announcement for an end date, participating locations and any special conditions before attempting redemption. |
| Trading continues with restrictions | Acceptance may require additional spending, exclude certain products or apply only to selected channels. | Follow the stated conditions; do not assume the normal terms still apply. |
| A buyer takes over some or all of the business | The purchaser may choose which liabilities to assume. Existing balances may be accepted, limited or excluded. | Look for the buyer’s published terms and retain evidence of the original balance. |
| Trading stops | The card is generally a claim in the insolvency rather than a way to obtain goods. | Ask the administrator or insolvency practitioner how to submit a proof of debt or creditor claim. |
| The payer used a card or another protected payment method | The bank or card issuer may have a chargeback or statutory-card process, subject to eligibility and deadlines. | The original payer should contact the issuer promptly and ask which remedy applies. |
These paths can overlap. For example, a buyer might keep stores open but reject old vouchers, while a bank claim remains available to the person who paid. None of the routes guarantees a full recovery.
What to do, step by step
- Confirm the legal event. Find the retailer’s official notice and identify the appointed administrator, receiver, liquidator or insolvency practitioner. In Australia, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) points consumers to notices published through the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). In the UK, Companies House records can show that a company has entered administration or liquidation. Use the official case information, not an unverified social-media post.
- Read the administrator’s or buyer’s instructions. Look specifically for whether stores and online ordering remain open, whether gift cards and store credit are accepted, which dates or locations are covered, whether a minimum extra purchase is required, and whether there is a deadline for making a claim.
- Use the balance only under those instructions. Do not tell staff to apply the retailer’s former policy if the administrator has issued different terms. A card that worked last week may be suspended, limited to full-price goods or excluded from a particular channel.
- If redemption is refused or trading has stopped, request the creditor process. Ask where to obtain the proof-of-debt form, what evidence is required and the deadline for filing. In Australia, the ACCC says consumers are usually unsecured creditors. In the UK, the Insolvency Service directs creditors in an administration to the appointed insolvency practitioner.
- Contact the original payer’s bank or card issuer immediately. Explain that the retailer has entered insolvency and that prepaid value remains unused. Ask about chargeback, statutory card protection or another applicable process, and record the issuer’s time limit. The person who merely received a gift card may not be the person entitled to make the payment claim.
- Preserve your evidence. Keep the physical card or voucher, screenshots of the balance, the receipt or order confirmation, account statements showing payment, emails, delivery records and copies of every administrator notice. These documents help both a creditor claim and a payment-provider inquiry.
Why a creditor claim may pay little or nothing
A creditor registration records what the retailer owes; it does not create money in the estate. The insolvency practitioner first deals with the company’s assets and the costs of the insolvency, followed by claims that rank ahead of ordinary unsecured debts. If insufficient assets remain, an unsecured gift-card claim can produce only a small dividend or no dividend. The timing is also uncertain: asset realisation and distributions can take a long time.
Australia’s ACCC describes consumers with remaining gift-card, voucher or credit-note value as usually unsecured creditors when a business is insolvent. New Zealand Consumer Protection says money back from an out-of-business retailer is unlikely. UK government guidance similarly warns that a last-resort unsecured dividend may be negligible. These are general descriptions, not a prediction for a specific retailer.

Payment-card remedies: act quickly, but do not assume success
Chargeback is a process operated under the rules of a card scheme and issuer; it is not an automatic insolvency refund. ASIC warns Australian consumers that conditions and time limits apply. New Zealand guidance recommends that the original payer ask the bank promptly when a retailer has gone into receivership or out of business. UK guidance says a credit-card company might help with an undelivered purchase in some circumstances.
When you call, have the transaction date, amount, merchant name, proof that the retailer entered insolvency, and evidence that goods or services were not supplied. Ask whether the issuer needs a written claim, a particular dispute reason or proof that you first contacted the merchant. A successful card refund and an insolvency dividend are not two recoveries for the same payment: UK guidance cautions that if the card company refunds the money, you cannot claim that same amount again through the insolvency process.
Eligibility depends on the payment method, jurisdiction, card terms and timing. A debit-card payment, bank transfer, cash purchase or gift received from someone else can follow a different route. The issuer, not the retailer’s former customer-service team, can confirm the available remedy.

Australia: administrator instructions and unsecured status
The ACCC says a holder with value remaining on a gift card, voucher or credit note may be owed money by an insolvent business. If an administrator continues trading, some transactions may be honoured, but conditions can apply. If trading stops, the consumer should register with the administrator for a chance of recovery. A purchaser of the failed business can decide which outstanding liabilities to take on, so a sale does not by itself preserve old balances.
ASIC’s consumer guidance also notes that an administrator may continue trading and honour credit notes, lay-bys, deposits or gift cards, potentially subject to conditions. It advises consumers to contact the card issuer straight away about possible chargeback rights because deadlines and terms apply. Follow the particular administrator’s announcement for the retailer concerned; national guidance cannot tell you whether that business has elected to accept your card.
New Zealand: receivership, claims and the 2026 expiry reform
New Zealand Consumer Protection says unused vouchers are unlikely to produce money back if a retailer goes out of business. Where a company is in receivership, the holder can contact the liquidators to make a claim. If the original purchase was made by credit card, the guidance recommends asking the bank promptly about chargeback.

The Commerce Commission’s gift-card expiry requirements apply to covered cards sold from 16 March 2026. In general, a covered card must have at least a three-year expiry period, subject to the legislation’s exceptions and definitions. That rule concerns the ordinary period during which a card is redeemable; it is not insolvency insurance. It does not require an insolvent retailer to have funds available, nor does it automatically require an administrator or receiver to accept the card after the business fails.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.United Kingdom: voluntary honouring and insolvency priority
UK government material responding to the Law Commission states that administrators or purchasers are not obliged to honour gift vouchers. They may choose to do so, and voluntary honouring is described as reasonably common in some situations where preserving a continuing business helps retain value. The decision can therefore change during a sale or restructuring.
If the company is in administration, the Insolvency Service directs creditors to the insolvency practitioner. Recovery depends on assets left after insolvency costs and claims with higher priority, and dealing with assets may take a long time. For an undelivered purchase paid by credit card, the card company might help; if it refunds the full amount, the same sum cannot also be claimed from the insolvency estate.

Common mistakes that reduce your options
- Assuming “administration” means the shop is permanently closed. Some retailers continue trading, so check the official announcement before abandoning a usable balance.
- Assuming an open shop must accept every old card. The administrator or buyer can impose conditions or decline the liability.
- Waiting for the insolvency to finish before contacting the bank. Card remedies often have issuer or scheme deadlines that run independently of the insolvency timetable.
- Claiming as the wrong person. The purchaser who paid normally has the payment-provider relationship; a recipient may need that person’s cooperation.
- Throwing away the card or receipt. A creditor or issuer may need transaction and balance evidence.
- Treating a new expiry rule as a guarantee of payment. Expiry legislation and insolvency rights address different problems.
- Submitting duplicate recoveries. Tell the insolvency practitioner if a card issuer has refunded the same transaction.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the country and the exact procedure: administration, receivership, liquidation or another process.
- Find the appointed practitioner and the official case announcement.
- Confirm whether the retailer is trading and whether your specific card or credit type is accepted.
- Record every restriction, claim deadline and contact channel.
- Preserve proof of purchase, payment and remaining balance.
- Ask the original payer’s bank or card issuer about chargeback or other protection without waiting for the creditor process to end.
- File a creditor claim if instructed, while understanding that registration is only a chance of recovery.
What you can realistically expect
The best outcome is continued trading with the balance accepted on clearly stated terms. A middle outcome is partial or conditional use, perhaps requiring additional spending or limiting where the card works. The worst outcome is a stopped business, an unsecured claim and no meaningful distribution. A payment-provider remedy can change the result for an eligible transaction, but it remains subject to the issuer’s rules and deadlines.
Because insolvency decisions are case-specific, the administrator’s current notice and your local regulator’s guidance are more authoritative than the retailer’s old terms, a general internet comment or advice from another country. Treat every balance as time-sensitive: verify the status, preserve evidence and pursue the available channels in parallel.
