The installed files may remain on your console or PC, but downloading the game is not the same as owning a permanent license. To keep playing that specific title, buy it separately; Xbox’s library page tells members to “buy now and save up to 20% with your member discount,” while the PC Game Pass page limits that offer to select games.
Your save is a separate matter. A catalog removal changes the game license, not automatically the existence of your progress. Whether you can resume later depends on the game’s save system, your account, the edition you purchase, and whether you change platform.

What changes when a Game Pass title leaves
Game Pass access is conditional. Xbox says subscribers can use games in the library until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the library. Once the title is removed, the subscription entitlement for that game ends even if you downloaded it earlier. The same basic rule applies when your own subscription expires: the catalog copy is not a permanent purchase.
Xbox does not say that leaving games are automatically deleted from a console or PC. Do not assume that the files will vanish, and do not assume that keeping the files preserves your right to launch them. The important change is the license to play through Game Pass. Xbox’s current library page directs members who want to continue playing a departing title to purchase it.

Catalog status is not identical everywhere. Xbox notes that availability can vary by region, plan, and platform, and the list changes over time. A date shown for one account or device may not be a universal departure date.

Can you still play a Game Pass game after it leaves?
Buy the game before or after removal
Buying the title is the direct way to continue without relying on its catalog inclusion. You can buy it while it is still listed or after it has left, provided the relevant store listing is available in your region and for your platform. The purchase must match what you plan to use: a console release, a PC release, or a particular edition may be treated separately by the game publisher and platform.
Buying a game does not mean every version is interchangeable. If you played a console edition through Game Pass and later buy a PC edition, check that title’s account, cross-save, and cross-progression support rather than assuming the two releases share progress.

Canceling your subscription is a different event with the same result for that game
If you cancel or allow Game Pass to expire while the title remains in the catalog, your subscription access ends when the paid period ends. If the title leaves first, access ends because the catalog entitlement is removed. In both cases, continuing to play requires another valid license, such as a separate purchase; the timing and any available offer can differ.
Does Game Pass give a discount before a game leaves?
Sometimes. Xbox’s Browse Xbox Game Pass Games page currently advertises: “To keep playing, buy now and save up to 20% with your member discount.” “Up to” is a maximum, not a promise that every departing game receives 20% off.
The PC Game Pass page qualifies discounts as applying to select games. Eligibility, the percentage, the edition covered, and the end date can therefore vary by title and region. Open the game’s current store listing while signed in and check the displayed price before treating the discount as part of your decision.

A discount can disappear when the title leaves, and the pages do not establish one universal grace period. If you already know you want to keep the game, compare the member price with the current store price before the displayed departure date rather than waiting for the last day.

Do you lose your save when a game leaves Game Pass?
Not automatically, and not universally guaranteed either. A save file records progress; the Game Pass entitlement controls whether the service lets you launch the game. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation describes account association and save roaming for supported Xbox game scenarios, but it does not promise cloud saves for every title or compatibility across every platform, edition, or separate release.
The safest assumption is that your progress can be reused only when the game supports the relevant save path and you return with the account and version the game expects. A catalog departure by itself is not evidence that your characters or campaign have been erased.

Before the game leaves
- Use the account that owns the progress. Sign in with the same Microsoft/Xbox account you used when playing. A different account may have no access to the original save.
- Allow the game to finish saving while connected. Play or open the title while it is still included, exit normally, and give any visible synchronization process time to complete. The exact save behavior is game-specific.
- Record the edition and platform. Note whether you used a console or PC release and whether the game was a standard, deluxe, or other edition. That information matters if you later purchase a different listing.
- Check the game’s own support documentation. Look for statements about cloud saves, cross-save, cross-progression, and transfers between editions. Do not infer support from another game in the same franchise.
What happens when you buy it later
If you purchase the same supported release and sign in with the account that contains the save, you may be able to continue where you stopped. Bethesda gives a concrete example for The Elder Scrolls Online: its support guidance says players can pick up where they left off after a Game Pass subscription lapses or ESO is removed, provided they purchase the game. That is evidence for ESO’s supported setup, not a guarantee for every Game Pass title.
Progress is less certain when you switch from console to PC, change editions, use a different account, or buy a separate remaster or sequel. The store purchase restores the license; it does not by itself convert an incompatible save.

Use Xbox’s live catalog rather than an old article or screenshot. The Game Pass games page includes a Leaving soon collection. Availability and displayed dates can change by region, plan, and platform, so check while signed in and select the version you actually play.
- Open the Xbox Game Pass games page.
- Go to the Leaving soon collection.
- Find the game and open its store or detail page.
- Confirm the platform, edition, displayed departure information, and any member price.
- If you want to keep playing, purchase before removal when the listing and discount meet your requirements.
Do not copy a static “leaving this month” list into your own planning. A title can be available on one plan or platform and absent on another, and catalog pages are updated as licensing arrangements change.
A practical decision guide
Buy now when all three conditions apply
- You expect to keep playing after the displayed departure date.
- The store listing confirms the platform and edition you need.
- The current member price is acceptable, including any title-specific discount.
Wait and verify when any condition is uncertain
- You are moving between console and PC.
- Your progress depends on a different edition, remaster, or publisher account.
- You cannot find clear save or cross-progression information for the title.
- The game is listed differently in your region or plan.
Waiting can mean losing a displayed member discount or having to buy at a later price. Buying early can avoid that timing risk, but it still makes sense to verify that you are purchasing the correct release rather than assuming every listing reads the same save.
What about DLC and add-ons?
The general Game Pass pages establish the base-game access rule and the separate-purchase path, but they do not provide a universal rule for downloadable content after a base game leaves. Add-on licenses, bundles, subscriptions, and publisher accounts can differ. Check the specific game’s official store and support terms before buying an expansion or assuming an add-on will work with a newly purchased base game.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a download with ownership: local files do not turn a subscription entitlement into a permanent license.
- Assuming every game has identical cloud-save behavior: Microsoft documents supported save-roaming scenarios, not universal transfer across all releases.
- Reading “up to 20%” as a guaranteed price: Xbox qualifies the offer for select games, so inspect the individual listing.
- Using a stale departure list: check the live Leaving soon collection for your region, plan, and platform.
- Buying the wrong version: confirm platform, edition, and account requirements before checkout.
- Assuming DLC follows automatically: verify add-on compatibility for that particular game.
Bottom line for your next Game Pass decision
A game leaving the library ends the subscription’s right to launch that title; it does not by itself prove that your local files or saved progress have been deleted. Purchase the correct release if you want uninterrupted access, treat the advertised discount as title-dependent, and verify save compatibility before changing platform or edition. For current timing, rely on Xbox’s live Leaving soon list and the store page shown for your account.
