When a game leaves Xbox Game Pass, it is no longer included for play through the subscription. To keep playing, you generally need to buy it separately; Xbox says a member discount of up to 20% may apply, but that is not guaranteed for every game or market. Check the game’s current listing for your plan, region and platform before deciding.
What changes when a game leaves Game Pass?
Game Pass is a catalog subscription, not permanent ownership of every listed game. Once a title leaves the catalog, your subscription no longer provides access to play it. Xbox’s Game Pass catalog directs members who want to continue playing to buy the game, and advertises a member discount of up to 20% where applicable.

The catalog’s “Leaving soon” collection describes its listed titles as games exiting within the next two weeks. Treat that window as time-sensitive: check the live listing rather than relying on an old announcement or screenshot. Xbox also notes that catalog titles, features and availability vary over time and by region, Game Pass plan and platform.
How to keep playing a departing game
- Check the departure notice. Open the Xbox Game Pass games catalog and find the title under “Leaving soon.” Confirm the date and that the listing matches the platform you play on.
- Check the purchase option while signed in. Review the game’s store listing with the account you use for Game Pass. Confirm the price and whether a member discount is offered; “up to 20%” is a maximum, not a universal offer.
- Confirm the edition and platform. Before buying, make sure the store version covers the platform and edition you use. Do not assume a purchase on another platform or through a different retailer grants the same access.
- Buy before access ends if you want uninterrupted access. Xbox presents purchasing the game as the way to keep playing after it leaves the subscription. Verify the purchase completes on the relevant store account.
Will your save file still work?
Xbox’s catalog and departure announcements do not establish a universal rule for whether saves remain available or usable after a title leaves Game Pass. Do not assume a save will be deleted, or that it is guaranteed to work after you buy the game. Save handling can require confirmation for the specific title, platform and store version; check the game’s support information or publisher guidance if preserving progress is important.

What to verify for a specific game
- The last date the game is included with your subscription.
- The platform and edition you currently play.
- The current purchase price and whether the member discount appears for your account.
- Whether the game remains available for purchase on the same platform after leaving the catalog.
- Whether your save and purchase entitlement carry over for that exact title and platform.
A historical example illustrates why dates matter: Xbox Wire’s February 3, 2026 announcement listed Madden NFL 24 for Cloud, Console and PC as leaving on February 15, 2026, and said members could save up to 20% on a purchase. That was a past notice, not a current departure schedule. The live catalog is the place to verify what is leaving now.
