A furniture retailer closing its doors does not automatically cancel every warranty or protection plan—but it does not guarantee that the store will keep honoring its own promises, either. The next step is to identify who actually made the coverage promise: the furniture maker, the retailer, or a separate service-contract company.
This is general U.S. consumer information. The result for a particular purchase can depend on its documents, state law, and any bankruptcy or liquidation process.

First, identify who is responsible for the coverage
Read the warranty certificate and any plan contract rather than relying on the store name on your receipt. Look for the named warrantor or provider, the claim contact, the coverage period, exclusions, and instructions for service. The company that sold the furniture—or a plan—may not be the company that promised to pay for repairs.

| Manufacturer’s written warranty | The manufacturer or other entity named as warrantor | The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that under the Magnuson-Moss framework, the party that actually makes a written warranty is responsible for it. A seller that merely distributes a product covered by another party’s written warranty is not responsible under the Act for that other party’s failure to perform. FTC guidance |
| Retailer’s own written promise | The retailer, or any successor or process identified in its closure or insolvency notices | Do not assume the manufacturer has taken on the retailer’s promise. Whether the claim can be pursued may depend on the written terms, state law, and the retailer’s insolvency process; there is no single remedy established for every closure. |
| Separately purchased protection plan or service contract | The company identified in the contract as provider, obligor, or administrator | A service contract is a separate agreement for product service, not simply the furniture’s included warranty. The FTC says the company making the service contract is responsible for ensuring its terms are disclosed. Check the contract for the claim process and any terms addressing provider closure or transfer. FTC guidance |
Implied warranties may also arise under state law, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Federal law limits when a seller that offers a written warranty or service contract may disclaim implied warranties, but the FTC’s general guide does not determine what an individual customer can recover after a store closes. Read the FTC’s explanation.

How to pursue a claim when the store is closed
- Gather your records. Keep the receipt, warranty certificate, protection-plan contract, product model or identification information, and photos of the issue. Save earlier service requests and replies, too.
- Contact the named company. Use the warranty or plan document’s claim instructions. Ask whether the company accepts claims directly, what evidence it needs, and whether it uses an authorized service provider.
- Ask the manufacturer if service normally ran through retailers. Ask whether it can take the claim directly or whether an authorized service company or successor handles it. Manufacturer procedures differ, so get the answer for your product and claim.
- Document a retailer’s own promise. If the store made the promise, keep its written statements and advertising as well as the purchase paperwork. Do not treat a manufacturer warranty as though it automatically adopts that separate promise.
- Request a written explanation if a claim is denied. Ask the company to identify the warranty or contract provision it relies on. A state consumer-protection office or lawyer may help assess a fact-specific dispute.
Retailer-based furniture service can vary by brand
For example, Magnussen Home describes itself as a wholesale manufacturer and supplier and says it relies on retailers to provide service after a sale. Its FAQ also provides a Magnussen Home Customer Care route. That is one company’s arrangement, not an industry-wide rule; if the store that sold your furniture is unavailable, contact the manufacturer and ask how it handles claims. Magnussen Home FAQ.

The store’s closure alone does not show whether a particular retailer-issued promise remains enforceable, whether a plan administrator has assumed claims, or whether a customer can recover through a bankruptcy or liquidation proceeding. Those questions require the actual warranty and plan documents, the applicable state law, and details of the closure. The FTC’s federal warranty guide explains general federal rules, not the outcome of an individual claim.
