What Happens to Full-Time Traders When a Bull Market Ends?

When a bull market ends, a full-time trader loses more than a favorable price trend. Long-biased setups face failed breakouts, sharper reversals, overnight gaps and less predictable follow-through, while rent, taxes, data subscriptions, commissions, spreads and platform fees continue. Leverage can turn an ordinary losing streak into margin pressure or forced liquidation.

Some traders can remain profitable in a bear market, but no evidence supports treating that outcome as typical. Research finds that persistent, after-fee profitability is rare, many entrants leave quickly, and surviving longer does not automatically improve risk-adjusted performance. A trader’s outcome depends on whether the strategy still has an edge after costs, whether losses remain within capital limits and whether personal cash reserves can withstand unstable income.

The first change is a loss of the bull-market tailwind

During a sustained advance, long positions can benefit from broad market drift. A trade may work even when its timing is imperfect because pullbacks find buyers and breakouts receive follow-through. That environment can make a trader’s results look more repeatable than the underlying process really is.

When the advance ends, direction is less forgiving. A breakout can reverse through its entry price, correlations can change, and a gap can move past a planned stop before it can be executed. A strategy that depended on momentum continuing overnight may experience a very different distribution of wins and losses. The change can arrive as a gradual deterioration or as a crash, but the practical problem is the same: historical assumptions about movement, liquidity and execution may no longer hold.

This does not mean every long trade fails or that every bear market offers no opportunity. It means the trader must establish, with new observations, whether the previous edge remains present. A temporary drawdown and a changed regime look similar in a small sample, so decisions based on a handful of trades can be as dangerous as refusing to adapt at all.

What the evidence says about day-trading profitability

The available studies do not provide a single worldwide survival rate for full-time traders after a bull market. They cover different countries, instruments, periods, definitions of “day trader” and fee assumptions. Their consistent message is that making a living from short-term trading is selective even before a regime change.

Evidence Reported result Important qualification
Barber, Lee, Liu and Odean, 2014 Fewer than 1% of day traders could predictably and reliably earn positive abnormal returns net of fees. The study examined Taiwanese day traders and measured performance after fees.
Same 2014 study The top 500 ranked traders earned 37.9 basis points per day after fees in the following year; the bottom-ranked group lost 28.9 basis points per day. These are ranked-group averages, not a forecast for an individual trader.
Financial Analysts Journal study record, 2003 At least 64% of day traders lost money, and about twice as many lost as made money. Profitability was positively related to Nasdaq movements in the period studied.
Learning by Aspiring Professional Traders, 2016 Many aspiring futures traders exited rapidly. Among survivors, the research found no evidence that risk-adjusted performance improved over time.
Ma, Fraser-Mackenzie, Sung, Kansara and Johnson, 2022 About 25% of spread traders achieved positive average returns per trade. This is a spread-trading sample, not a universal estimate for all full-time traders.

The figures explain why a bull market can create false confidence. If profitability is already uncommon and linked to the market’s direction, the end of that direction removes a source of returns at the same time that trading friction becomes more important.

How a trader’s finances change after the turn

Income becomes irregular

A full-time trader has converted an uncertain stream of returns into a household budget. In a strong trend, monthly withdrawals may appear dependable. After the turn, a sequence of small losses, flat weeks and occasional gains can make the same withdrawal rate unsustainable. The immediate response may be to reduce withdrawals, draw on a separate cash reserve or obtain other income while the strategy is evaluated. Taking money from a trading account during a drawdown also reduces the capital available for recovery.

Costs consume a larger share of gross returns

The Securities and Exchange Commission warned that day traders “invariably generate hefty commissions and often pay fees for computer and other electronic services.” It also said they “need to make significant profits simply to cover the costs of their trades.” Those costs include commissions, bid-ask spreads, market-data subscriptions, platform charges and, for some positions, stock-borrow or other financing charges.

When a bull market supplies large gross moves, friction can be a small percentage of the result. When opportunities become smaller or less frequent, the same bill can turn a strategy that looks profitable before expenses into a loss after expenses. A valid review therefore uses net results, including every recurring and per-trade charge, rather than a chart showing gross entries and exits.

Leverage turns a drawdown into a capital event

Margin magnifies both gains and losses. A normal series of losing trades can consume the buffer supporting a leveraged position, trigger a margin call or force liquidation at an unfavorable time. The SEC’s examination work identified margin, lending disclosure, short selling, capital and supervision as recurring concerns for broker-dealers serving active traders.

Forced liquidation is different from choosing to stop. It can occur while a trader still believes a setup will recover, and it may leave too little capital to continue. Maximum position size, permitted leverage and the point at which trading is paused are therefore survival rules, not merely performance preferences.

Execution gets harder precisely when speed matters

Bear markets often combine rapid reversals with gaps and changing liquidity. A stop order can execute materially away from its intended level, and a spread can widen when the trader most needs to exit. Short selling introduces borrow availability and financing considerations; holding positions overnight adds gap exposure. These are process risks that may be hidden during a calm, steadily rising market.

Can you still make a living day trading in a bear market?

Yes, it is possible for a particular trader and strategy, but the evidence does not make it a dependable occupation. A bear market can produce large moves in both directions, and some methods are designed to trade declines, volatility or relative performance rather than rely on a rising index. Possibility is not probability: the trader must demonstrate positive results after all costs, with realistic execution and enough out-of-sample observations to distinguish an edge from luck.

A trader who cannot show that evidence should treat withdrawals as a risk to capital, not as a salary. A separate source of living expenses can prevent the need to increase leverage or force trades to meet a monthly target. The relevant question is not whether an index is up or down, but whether the trader’s process remains profitable and survivable under the current conditions.

  1. Dependence on market direction. Identify how much of the historical result came from long exposure during a rising index. If nearly every profitable period required the market to advance, a regime change is a material hypothesis to test.
  2. Leverage and maximum drawdown. Recalculate losses using actual margin terms and realistic gap execution. Set a predefined account-level loss limit and a point at which new risk is reduced or stopped.
  3. Liquidity and execution costs. Record commissions, spreads, data and platform fees, borrow charges and slippage. Test whether the net result remains positive after the costs paid in live trading, not the theoretical costs in a chart.
  4. Overnight versus intraday exposure. Separate results by holding period. A strategy may work during regular-session liquidity but fail when a gap bypasses its exit plan.
  5. Diversification across instruments and setups. Determine whether several instruments provide genuinely different sources of return or simply repeat the same market risk. Remove setups whose behavior has deteriorated instead of adding trades to compensate.
  6. Cash runway. Calculate household and business expenses independently from the trading account. The runway must cover periods when withdrawals are reduced or suspended.
  7. Out-of-sample net performance. Reserve data that was not used to design or tune the rules. A positive backtest is not enough if the result disappears under different dates, fees, position sizes or execution assumptions.

Use a sufficiently large sample and predefined review dates. A short losing streak can occur in a sound system; an expanding drawdown, repeated rule violations or a net edge that vanishes under realistic costs is stronger evidence that the process needs to be reduced, redesigned or abandoned.

Which adaptations actually change the risk?

Adaptation is strategy-specific. There is no universal instruction to “go short” or simply increase volatility exposure. The useful comparison is how a process behaves on each risk axis.

Process question If the answer is unfavorable after the bull market What must be demonstrated before scaling again
Does the method require a rising market? Long-only entries may produce repeated failed breakouts and clustered losses. Positive net results in the new regime or a tested rule that limits exposure when direction is unfavorable.
How much leverage is used? Ordinary losses can create margin pressure and forced liquidation. A drawdown that remains within capital limits under gap and slippage assumptions.
Are instruments liquid enough? Wider spreads and poor fills can erase a small statistical edge. Live or out-of-sample net results after observed execution costs.
Is risk held overnight? Gaps can bypass stops and make loss size unpredictable. Separate evidence for overnight exposure and a funded plan for gap risk.
Are setups genuinely diversified? Several positions can lose together when correlations change. Evidence that the positions do not all depend on the same market factor.
Are withdrawals fixed? Income demands can force trades during a drawdown. A cash reserve and a withdrawal policy that can be reduced without increasing risk.

Why some traders leave

Exit is a common outcome and is not proof that a person lacked intelligence or discipline. Capital may fall below a workable level, health or family obligations may change, or the trader may decide that unstable income is unacceptable. A bear market can make those constraints visible quickly because the account no longer supplies regular withdrawals.

The futures-trader survival research found rapid exit by many aspiring professionals. It also found no evidence that risk-adjusted performance improved over time among those who remained. Therefore, continued participation should not be treated as proof of improving skill. A trader can survive by taking less risk, by having outside income or simply by accepting a long period of low returns.

What a strategy backtest can and cannot prove

A 2016–2023 opening-range-breakout backtest covering two bear markets reported outperformance versus passive QQQ under specified leverage assumptions. That result is useful as a reminder that a bear market does not make every systematic approach untradeable. It is not evidence that full-time trading is a dependable occupation.

The result is historical and model-dependent. Different opening definitions, instruments, fees, leverage, position-sizing rules and execution quality can produce different outcomes. A person considering the method would need to reproduce the assumptions, test periods not used in development and verify that the account can tolerate the modeled drawdowns before risking income capital.

A practical survival checklist

  • Keep trading capital separate from money needed for rent, taxes and routine bills.
  • Record every cost and evaluate the strategy on net, not gross, returns.
  • Predefine maximum position size, leverage and account drawdown limits.
  • Track results separately for long, short, overnight and intraday trades.
  • Measure slippage and gap outcomes instead of assuming stops fill at their displayed price.
  • Pause or reduce risk when the written limit is reached; do not increase size to recover a loss.
  • Review a large, predefined sample at scheduled intervals rather than changing rules after one trade.
  • Require out-of-sample evidence before adding a new instrument, setup or leverage level.
  • Maintain a realistic cash runway and a plan for reduced or zero withdrawals.
  • Accept exit as a valid risk decision when the capital, health or household cost is no longer acceptable.

The honest answer

When a bull market ends, full-time traders do not all lose everything, but the environment removes a tailwind, exposes weak processes and raises the cost of being wrong. The strongest protection is not a prediction about the next market direction. It is a process that survives leverage, execution friction, unstable income and a documented test showing that the edge remains positive after fees.
