Moving a VMware virtual machine (VM) to Hyper-V or another hypervisor normally preserves the guest operating system, applications and data, but it does not preserve the VM’s entire virtual hardware environment. The virtual disks are converted to the destination format, and the destination hypervisor presents different firmware, storage controllers, network adapters, drivers and management services.
Plan the move as a conversion followed by a validation and cutover exercise—not as a byte-for-byte relocation. Most failures occur after the first boot, when drivers, NIC identity, boot mode, security agents, backups, clusters or application dependencies no longer match the old VMware configuration.

What actually changes when a VMware VM moves?
The workload’s logical contents can remain intact: the operating system installation, application binaries, databases and files are copied into a new virtual-machine container. The container itself is rebuilt for the target platform. A VMware VMDK may become a Hyper-V VHDX, while virtual firmware, disk controllers, NICs, MAC addresses, CPU features and integration services are recreated.

How an online VMware-to-Hyper-V migration works
An online conversion can keep the source VM running while most data is copied. It still requires a short outage for a consistent final state. Microsoft’s extension supports vCenter 6.x, 7.x and 8.x and can process up to 10 VMs in a batch, subject to destination capacity and dependency planning. The Windows Admin Center gateway must be version 2410, build 2.4.12.10 or later, and the workflow requires VDDK 8.0.3.
1. Inventory and prechecks
Start with an application-owner-approved inventory, not just a list exported from vCenter. Record the guest OS and version, BIOS or UEFI mode, Secure Boot status, every virtual disk and controller, snapshots, static addresses, VLANs, DNS records, certificates, service accounts, scheduled jobs and external dependencies.
- Map upstream and downstream services, database connections, cluster membership, load balancers and licensing servers.
- Record backup schedules, retention, replication, monitoring, endpoint security and vulnerability-scanning agents.
- Confirm that no active VMware snapshot remains. Consolidate or remove snapshots according to your backup and change-control procedures.
- Check destination disk space, memory, CPU capacity and network bandwidth, including space for temporary conversion files.
- Confirm Change Block Tracking (CBT) support and install the required PowerCLI and Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) components for the chosen procedure.
- Capture a recoverable backup and test that it can restore the workload before touching the source.
Microsoft lists these checks in its VM migration procedure. A precheck that passes only at the infrastructure level is not proof that the application is portable.
2. Initial synchronization while the VM runs
The converter creates a source snapshot or equivalent point-in-time view and copies the virtual disks to the destination. The production VM can continue serving users while this baseline transfer runs. Copy time depends on disk size, storage throughput, network bandwidth and the workload’s write rate; no universal duration applies.
During this period, avoid unplanned changes such as disk expansion, controller changes, operating-system upgrades or application migrations. A change that alters disk layout or identity can invalidate the conversion plan.

3. Final delta copy and cutover
CBT tracks blocks changed after the initial copy. At the approved maintenance window, stop application services and power off the VMware VM. The converter copies the remaining changed blocks, imports the destination VM and applies the planned CPU, memory and network settings. This reduces outage time, but it does not eliminate it: writes must stop long enough to produce a consistent final disk image.
Downtime is driven by the final delta size, disk-change rate, network throughput, application quiescence and target capacity. Treat any published “near-zero downtime” wording as a design goal rather than a guarantee.

Boot the converted VM in an isolated or controlled network first. Confirm the expected firmware mode and boot disk. Windows may discover new storage and network devices; Linux may fail to boot if the target’s storage or network drivers were not present before migration.
Microsoft states: “For Linux guests, you must install Hyper-V drivers before starting migration. The Hyper-V drivers are essential to ensure successful post-migration boot.” Install and enable the target platform’s integration components according to its support documentation before the cutover whenever the guest requires them.
- Check the boot manager, EFI system partition, storage-controller driver and filesystem mounts.
- Confirm that all disks appear in the original order and that drive letters or mount points are unchanged.
- Install target integration services, paravirtual drivers or guest agents, then reboot if required.
- Remove obsolete VMware agents, virtual hardware drivers and scheduled tasks only after you have confirmed that rollback is still possible.
- Review system logs for driver, time-source, storage-reset and device-enumeration errors.
5. Network and application validation
A converted VM can boot successfully yet remain unavailable because the new NIC does not match the old interface. Verify the interface name, MAC address, VLAN, virtual switch, IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers, routes and firewall profile. Windows can retain a static address on a hidden former adapter while assigning DHCP to the newly detected adapter; Linux udev or predictable-interface rules can similarly produce a different name.

Test DNS registration and resolution in both directions, routing to every dependency, certificate-based authentication, load-balancer health checks and outbound firewall policies. Validate time synchronization against the approved source; a changed virtual clock source can break Kerberos, databases and license checks.
Run an application-owner checklist that covers database consistency, queues, file shares, scheduled tasks, service startup order, APIs, clustered roles and user transactions. The Microsoft extension supports dependency-aware batches and static-IP preservation in its documented scenarios, but those features are not automatically available in every converter or destination hypervisor.
VMware Tools, drivers and management integrations
VMware Tools contains guest utilities and drivers designed for vSphere. Broadcom’s November 2025 VMware vSphere Standard Specific Program Documentation states: “Customer may not use VMware Tools with any other hypervisor.” Remove or replace VMware Tools and related agents in accordance with the target platform’s support guidance and the terms that apply to your software.
On Windows, Microsoft’s extension includes cleanup that removes VMware Tools after migration. Do not delete tools blindly on a production VM: first confirm that backup quiescing, monitoring, endpoint protection, time synchronization and automation do not depend on a VMware service. Replace each function with a supported target-hypervisor agent or an independent product, then test it.

- VMware snapshots and snapshot-based backup workflows.
- Paravirtual SCSI and VMware-specific virtual NIC drivers.
- Guest heartbeat, quiescing and vCenter automation hooks.
- NIC names, MAC-address assumptions and scripts that query VMware device identifiers.
Keep the old VM powered off but intact until the target workload has passed its acceptance tests. That preserves a practical rollback path without running two copies of a stateful service at once.
What happens to static IPs, backups and security controls?
Static IP addresses
The address itself can be reused, but the destination NIC may have a different MAC address, interface name or driver. Before cutover, document reservations and access-control lists. After boot, remove stale adapters where appropriate, assign the approved address to the active interface, and test ARP, DNS, routing and firewall rules.
Backups and replication
A backup job that identifies VMs by vCenter object ID, folder path, UUID or datastore may not recognize the imported VM. Register the new VM with the backup system, select the correct disks, run a fresh full or synthetic-full backup when policy requires it, and perform a test restore. Recreate replication and disaster-recovery protection on the target; do not assume VMware snapshots or replication metadata carry over.
Security and monitoring
Endpoint agents can treat the converted guest as a new device because hardware identifiers changed. Check activation, certificates, host-based firewall profiles, vulnerability-scanner enrollment, SIEM forwarding and monitoring policies. Reissue or re-enroll agents when the vendor requires it, and verify that alert ownership and escalation paths still point to the correct service.
Boot firmware, Secure Boot and hardware compatibility
UEFI and BIOS are not interchangeable in every guest. A VM installed in UEFI mode may not boot if imported as legacy BIOS, and Secure Boot may reject a driver that is unsigned or not trusted by the destination’s firmware. Record the source mode and reproduce it deliberately. If Secure Boot keys or templates differ, document the change and test signed drivers before production cutover.
Storage-controller changes are another common failure point. A guest that only has a VMware paravirtual SCSI driver may show an inaccessible boot device when attached to a different controller. Install the destination driver in advance where possible, or use the target’s documented recovery process to inject it offline.
Licensing and support after leaving vSphere
VMware entitlements do not automatically transfer to Hyper-V or another hypervisor. The destination has separate licensing, support, hardware and guest-OS requirements. Broadcom’s VMware vSphere Standard Specific Program Documentation says the software is subscription software licensed per core, with a minimum requirement of 16 cores per processor. That term applies to the documented program; your transaction documents and subscription agreement control.
The same documentation describes a Migration License through embedded evaluation mode for the maximum period allowed by that feature. Do not treat that wording as a blanket right to continue production use. Ask the vendor or reseller for written confirmation about subscription reduction, reassignment, coexistence, support coverage and any migration-license period.

Choosing and sizing the destination hypervisor
Compare platforms against the workload, not just the ability to import a disk. Evaluate the following axes before selecting a batch or migration date:
- Guest coverage: operating-system release, kernel or driver level, BIOS/UEFI, Secure Boot and supported integration services.
- Storage conversion: VMDK support, snapshots, thin provisioning, multi-disk ordering, controller types, encryption and expected throughput.
- Network behavior: VLANs, virtual switches, static-IP retention, MAC changes, NIC naming and security policies.
- Operations: management APIs, monitoring, backup, replication, patching, automation and disaster recovery.
- Application fit: clustering, latency, hardware dongles, database support, licensing activation and vendor support statements.
- Migration mechanics: hot, warm or cold conversion; final-cutover duration; rollback; batch size; and available CPU, memory, storage and network capacity.
- Commercials: VMware exit terms, target-hypervisor licenses, support contracts and conversion-tool costs.
Run a pilot with a representative noncritical VM and at least one workload that exercises the storage, network and backup paths you will use in production. A successful pilot proves the procedure for that guest and configuration; it does not certify every VM in the estate.
Rollback and decommissioning checklist
- Obtain application-owner approval for the maintenance window and acceptance criteria.
- Take and verify a restorable backup; record the source VM’s power state, disks, firmware, IP configuration and dependencies.
- Complete the initial copy and confirm that the destination VM has the expected disk count and capacity.
- Stop application services, power off the source and complete the final delta synchronization.
- Import and boot the destination in an isolated or controlled network.
- Install target drivers and integration services, remove unsupported VMware components, and correct firmware or boot settings.
- Validate storage, networking, DNS, time, security, monitoring, backups, replication and application transactions.
- Keep the source VM powered off but recoverable, with its disks and backups protected from automatic cleanup.
- Record the new VM name, UUID, host placement, IP/MAC details, backup policy and operational owner.
- After formal sign-off, retire the VMware inventory and storage according to retention, licensing and change-control requirements.
If the destination fails validation, do not repeatedly boot both copies of a stateful workload. Power down the destination, preserve its logs, restore service on the source if required by the rollback plan, and investigate the specific driver, identity, network or application fault before another attempt.
Common failure symptoms and fixes

How to decide whether the migration is safe
A migration is ready when the target VM boots with the intended firmware and drivers, every disk and interface is accounted for, application owners have completed functional tests, backups and monitoring are operational, and a tested rollback remains available. The conversion itself is only the middle step. Compatibility evidence, dependency-aware sequencing, a controlled outage and written acceptance criteria determine whether users experience a routine transition or an emergency recovery.
