Changing the Windows sign-in and changing an Edge profile are separate actions. A new Windows user account normally has its own Windows application-data location, so local Edge data from another Windows account should not be assumed to move automatically. Edge may use your Windows identity to make browser sign-in easier, but that convenience does not delete, rename or migrate an Edge profile.
Your result depends on whether you changed a password or PIN, switched to another Windows user, changed the account inside Edge, added a work account, or removed a profile. If the same account was signed in to Edge and the required sync categories were enabled, supported data can be downloaded into a profile on the new account. Unsynced local data needs to be preserved before you remove the old profile or Windows account.

First identify which sign-in change you made
People often describe several different operations as “changing the Windows sign-in.” They have different consequences for Edge:
| What changed | What normally happens in Edge | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| You changed the Windows password, PIN, Windows Hello method or sign-in option for the same user account. | The Windows user-data location is still the same. Edge profiles and their local data normally remain available. | Confusing a sign-in-method change with a new Windows account can lead you to remove a profile unnecessarily. |
| You signed in to a different Windows user account. | The new account should be treated as a separate local Edge environment. Microsoft documents Edge data under the current Windows user’s local application-data location. | Local-only favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings or open tabs may not be present unless they were synced or separately preserved. |
| You added or removed a work or school account in Windows. | Windows identity information can affect Edge’s sign-in experience, but it is not the same as deleting an Edge profile. | An organization may require a particular work profile or enforce compliance settings. |
| You changed the account signed in to an existing Edge profile. | The profile remains an Edge profile, but the data available through sync depends on the account and the individual sync controls. | Signing in with a different account does not make the first account’s cloud data appear in the second one. |
| You removed an Edge profile or cleared browsing data. | Removing a profile permanently deletes that profile’s local browsing data from the device. A deletion made while sync is active can also affect other devices. | Unsynced information may be unrecoverable, and synced deletions can propagate. |
Edge profiles are managed inside the browser. Microsoft’s profile guidance explains that you can create, switch and remove profiles independently of the Windows account: Sign in and create multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge.

How Windows and Edge store identity and data
Windows identity can help Edge sign in
Edge can detect identity information supplied by the operating system and use it to simplify browser sign-in. That behavior is an authentication convenience, not a promise that every Windows account change will be mirrored as an Edge-profile change. The available controls and automatic sign-in behavior can also be affected by policies on managed computers. Microsoft documents these identity behaviors in Microsoft Edge identity support and configuration.
Local data belongs to the Windows user context
Microsoft documents the Edge user-data directory under the current Windows user’s local application-data path; the location is based on the Windows environment rather than being one universal folder shared by every user. The variables and locations are described in Create Microsoft Edge user data directory variables. From that documented arrangement, it is reasonable to treat a different Windows account as having a separate local Edge data location. Microsoft does not guarantee that creating or switching Windows accounts will automatically copy unsynced browser data between those locations.
This distinction explains why a new Windows account can open Edge and show no familiar favorites even though the old account still has them. The old data may still be intact under the old Windows account, but it is not automatically visible to the new account.

What Edge sync can carry to another account
Sync is conditional, not an automatic backup of every file in an Edge profile. To retrieve cloud-synced data, sign in to Edge with the same account that supplied the data and enable the relevant categories. Microsoft lists supported categories such as favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill and payment information in Sign in to sync Microsoft Edge across devices.

Each category is controlled separately. For example, a user may have synchronized favorites and passwords but left history or extensions disabled. In that case, a new profile can restore the first two categories while correctly showing no history or extensions. Seeing the same account name is therefore not enough; inspect the individual sync controls.
- Same account required: signing in to a different Microsoft account does not expose the first account’s synchronized data.
- Category controls matter: only enabled, supported categories are expected to appear.
- Sync is not a guarantee for unsynced local state: data that never reached sync remains tied to the original local profile.
- Cloud presence does not prevent deletion: deleting synced data while synchronization is active can remove it from other signed-in devices.
Checklist before changing Windows accounts or removing anything
If the old Windows account is still accessible, perform these checks before signing out for the last time or deleting the account:
- List the Edge profiles. Open Edge, select the profile icon near the address bar, and review every profile. Do not assume the profile name is the same as the Windows account name.
- Inspect the signed-in account. In Edge, open Settings and more (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Profiles. Record which account is shown for each profile.
- Review sync categories. Select the profile’s sync settings and check favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill and payment information individually. A disabled switch means that category is local to the profile unless you preserve it another way.
- Allow synchronization to finish. Keep the old profile signed in while you verify that the enabled categories are available on another device or in a test profile. Do not treat merely opening a new profile as proof that all local data was backed up.
- Preserve local-only information. Export or otherwise copy important favorites and record any information that is not synchronized. Keep the old Windows account available until the new account has been checked.
- Check for organization rules. On a work or school computer, read any policy or compliance message before changing accounts. Administrators can require a particular work profile or restrict sign-in behavior.
Moving to a new Windows user account
This is the case most likely to be misunderstood. A new Windows user should be treated as a new local Edge environment, with sync as the supported way to repopulate data.

- Open the profile picker. Select the profile icon and see whether Edge offers an existing profile, a profile creation option or a sign-in prompt. The presence of a profile with a familiar name does not prove that the old local data was copied.
- Create or select the intended Edge profile. Keep personal and work identities in their appropriate profiles rather than combining them accidentally.
- Sign in with the same Edge account used on the old Windows account. If you use a different account, the old account’s synchronized data will not be retrieved.
- Open the profile’s sync settings and enable the categories you actually want. Confirm that favorites, passwords, extensions, history, settings, open tabs, autofill and payment information appear only where expected.
- Compare against the old profile. Look for recent favorites, a representative password, installed extensions and important settings. Missing items may have been disabled in sync or may have existed only locally.
- Keep the old account until verification is complete. If something is missing, return to the old Windows account and preserve it before deleting the old profile or account.
Microsoft documents the local path and sync behavior, but does not promise automatic migration of unsynchronized data between Windows accounts. Do not delete the old account merely because the new Edge window opens successfully.

When the Windows account stays the same
Changing a password, PIN or Windows Hello method for the same user account normally leaves the Windows user-data location unchanged. Edge profiles should still be available in the profile picker, along with their local data. If a profile appears missing, first verify that you are signed in to the same Windows user and that Edge is showing the correct profile list.
Adding a work or school identity under Windows settings is also not equivalent to switching Windows users. Edge may offer to sign in with that identity or create a work profile, but you can continue to use a personal profile separately unless an organization policy says otherwise. Avoid removing a personal profile simply because a work sign-in prompt appeared.
Changing the account inside Edge
Changing the account associated with Edge is a browser operation, even when Windows uses the same email address. In Settings and more > Settings > Profiles, identify the profile you are editing before signing out or adding another account.
- Note the current profile name, account and sync categories.
- Preserve data that is not synchronized before changing the account.
- Use the profile controls to sign out, add a profile or sign in with the intended account, depending on the option Edge presents.
- Review sync switches after the new sign-in; do not assume the previous profile’s choices apply to the new account.
- Verify the resulting data before removing the old profile.
Keeping two accounts in separate Edge profiles is often safer than replacing one account in place, because each profile retains a clear identity and its own settings.

Removing an Edge profile is a destructive action
Microsoft’s privacy documentation states: "Removing the profile from Microsoft Edge settings permanently deletes browsing data for the specific profile stored on the device, such as browsing history, favorites, form fill data, and passwords." Read the full explanation in User data and privacy in Microsoft Edge.
That warning concerns local data stored for the profile on the device. Information that was synchronized may still be available after you sign in again with the same account, but you should not assume every item was synchronized or that recovery is possible. Preserve local-only data first.
Clearing history is a separate operation with its own sync implications. Microsoft warns that deleting data while signed in and synchronizing can remove it from all synced devices; its deletion guidance is in View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge. Before selecting a time range or data category, determine whether you intend a device-only cleanup or a synchronized deletion.

Work and school accounts need an extra check
Organizations can require a managed Edge work profile, enforce sign-in restrictions or block access until the device meets compliance requirements. If Edge displays a compliance error, follow your organization’s instructions instead of repeatedly removing and recreating profiles. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance is available at Troubleshooting compliance error messages for a work or school account.
Best Value
A work profile can coexist with a personal profile, but the organization may control what data is synchronized, where it can be used and whether extensions or payment information are allowed. Keep personal browsing data in the personal profile and do not move organizational data into an unmanaged account without permission.
Troubleshooting common outcomes
The new Windows account opens an empty Edge
Confirm that you are in the intended Windows user, then open the profile picker and sign in with the same Edge account used previously. Check every sync category. If the old account is still available, compare the old profile and preserve anything missing before making further changes.
Favorites appear but passwords or history do not
This usually means the categories were not all enabled, the data belonged to another Edge account or the missing items were local-only. Return to the old profile, inspect its sync switches and preserve local data. Do not infer that one synchronized category proves that all categories were backed up.
An old profile disappeared after account switching
Check the profile picker and the Windows account first. A different Windows user can have a different local data location, so the old profile may still be present under the original account. If the profile was removed from Edge settings, local browsing data may have been permanently deleted.
Data disappeared on several devices
Stop clearing data and inspect the account currently signed in to each device. A deletion performed while sync was enabled can propagate. Sign in with the correct account and review sync settings before making another change.
Edge repeatedly asks for a work or school sign-in
Read the exact policy or compliance message and contact the organization’s administrator if required. Creating additional personal profiles will not bypass a policy applied to a managed work profile.
A safe decision rule
Keep the original Windows account and Edge profile until the replacement has been verified. Treat local data, Edge profile membership and cloud synchronization as three separate layers: a Windows sign-in change can alter the first layer’s context, an Edge profile change controls the second, and sync governs only the supported categories that were enabled for the relevant account. Checking all three before deleting anything is the difference between a controlled move and accidental data loss.
