Electronic Arts’ acquisition by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake and Affinity Partners closed on August 4, 2026. The closing announcement did not cancel players’ games, require a mass EA Account migration or announce a shutdown of EA’s online services. For players, the practical answer is more limited: existing EA licence terms, account links and game-specific service rules still govern access, while future decisions about individual titles remain possible.
Your saves and achievements remain tied to the EA Account that holds them. EA’s privacy policy permits information transfers in a merger or sale when legally allowed, with consent where law or contract requires it. None of those policies should be read as a guarantee that every game or server will remain available indefinitely.

What changed when EA was acquired?
EA announced that the transaction with PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners successfully closed on August 4, 2026. The agreement had been announced on September 29, 2025, and stockholders approved it at a special meeting on December 22, 2025. At closing, stockholders were to receive $210 in cash per share. EA common stock ceased trading and was to be delisted from NASDAQ.
That is a change in corporate ownership. It is not, by itself, a change to the EA Account attached to your games. The closing announcement did not announce account migration, cancellation of licences, deletion of player libraries or a blanket retirement of EA online services.

EA Chairman and CEO Andrew Wilson described the transaction as “entering this next chapter from a position of strength with partners who share our vision and ambition.” He also said the owners would “invest boldly, accelerate innovation, and build the next generation of games and experiences.” Those are statements about the company’s direction, not promises that every account, title or server will remain unchanged.
EA reported approximately $7.5 billion in GAAP net revenue for fiscal year 2026. That company-level figure provides financial context for the acquisition but does not determine what happens to an individual player’s games or data.
Will you lose your EA games?
There is no announced, acquisition-wide loss of EA games. However, EA’s User Agreement describes EA Services as licensed, not sold. It grants a personal, limited, non-transferable, revocable and non-exclusive licence for non-commercial use, subject to the agreement and applicable rules.

That wording explains why buying a game does not create an unconditional promise that the publisher will operate every feature forever. The licence framework is the existing contractual basis for EA services; it should not be treated as a legal conclusion about every country’s consumer-protection law, every platform purchase or every physical disc.

What the licence means in practice
- Your access normally continues through the EA Account and platform arrangement associated with the game.
- The licence is personal and generally cannot be transferred to another person or account.
- EA can enforce the User Agreement, including rules concerning misuse, fraud, bans and other violations.
- Online components can have separate game- and platform-specific requirements.
The acquisition does not alter those points automatically. A future owner could change policies, pricing, development priorities or service availability, but a specific change would need to be communicated through the relevant terms, product notice or platform process.
Will your EA Account, saves and progress transfer?
EA Help states that cloud data, including saves and achievements, is linked to an EA Account. If a game is moved between accounts, the receiving account may be able to play it while the saves, achievements and other cloud data remain connected to the original account.
That distinction matters because a corporate acquisition is not the same as an account transfer. The closing announcement gives players no instruction to create a new account, merge accounts or move a platform link. Your existing account remains the reference point for the data EA identifies as account-linked.

EA says account merges are not always possible and that players cannot move games or platform accounts themselves. Support-assisted transfers have restrictions, including circumstances involving bans and age ratings. Unlinking a platform account can also affect access to games, entitlements or progress associated with that link.

Do not merge accounts merely because EA has new owners. If you have a genuine duplicate-account problem, first read the current EA Help instructions for the particular account and game, then contact EA Support. Ask specifically what will happen to saves, achievements, downloadable content, subscriptions and platform links before authorizing a change.
Can the new owners access your personal information?
EA’s Privacy and Cookie Policy says it may transfer collected information to a relevant third party during a reorganization, divestiture, merger, sale or bankruptcy. The policy also says EA will obtain consent when required by law or contract.
This is a permission and process description, not proof of exactly which records were transferred in this transaction. It does not establish that every item of player data moved to a particular owner, nor does it mean consent is always required or never required. The applicable law, contract and the type of information determine the obligation.

EA’s privacy materials also describe information it may receive from linked platform accounts. Sharing can support account linking, cross-play and, in some games, cross-platform progress or purchases. A platform operator’s own privacy notice may govern information it collects or shares.

Ordinary operation of a linked platform feature should not be confused with a new acquisition-specific data transfer. If you want to reduce linked-account sharing, review the EA privacy controls and the relevant platform’s account and privacy settings before disconnecting anything; removing a link can have game-access or progress consequences.
Will EA shut down your game’s servers?
No service closure was announced in EA’s August 4, 2026 acquisition release. EA’s legal disclosures nevertheless state that it may retire online features after 30 days’ notice posted on its service-updates page. Requirements and notices can differ by game and platform.
The general notice rule is not evidence that a particular title is being shut down. A decision about one game could depend on player numbers, licensing, infrastructure, security, platform requirements or business priorities. To verify an actual change, check the title’s EA service-update entry, the game’s in-product notice and the platform-specific disclosure that applies to your copy.
What a server retirement could affect
- Online matchmaking, competitive modes and cooperative play.
- Cloud-connected features, leaderboards or event systems.
- Authentication required to launch an online-only title.
- Cross-play, cross-progression or cross-platform purchases that depend on the retired service.
Offline modes, local saves and installed content can behave differently from online features. The only reliable answer for a specific game is the notice issued for that game and platform.

Are cross-play, cross-progression and purchases changing?
EA says some games support cross-platform progress or purchases and that information sharing with platform operators can support linked services. Those capabilities are not universal. One title may carry progress between supported platforms while another may keep progression, purchases or entitlements separate.
Do not assume that a new corporate owner creates cross-progression, combines console and PC libraries or makes a purchase portable. Check the game’s account-linking screen, current support article and platform disclosure for the exact title. Pay attention to whether the feature covers:
- Cross-play, meaning playing with users on another platform.
- Cross-progression, meaning carrying saves or progress between platforms.
- Cross-platform purchases, meaning carrying purchased currency or content between platforms.
- Entitlement ownership, meaning which storefront or platform account authorizes the game.
What should you do with your EA Account now?
- Keep using the account that owns your data. Sign in to the EA Account currently associated with your game and verify that your connected platform accounts, email address and security methods are correct.
- Record important account details. Keep the EA ID, platform IDs, purchase receipts and any recovery information in a secure place. This helps Support verify ownership if a login or entitlement problem occurs.
- Do not make an unnecessary account change. The acquisition announcement does not require a new account, merge or unlink. Avoid experimental changes that could separate a platform entitlement from its saves.
- Check the title-specific support page. Look for current requirements, known issues, cross-platform rules and account-transfer restrictions for the game you actually play.
- Monitor service notices if the game is online-dependent. Use EA’s service-updates information and the game’s own notices rather than relying on general social-media claims about the acquisition.
- Contact EA Support before a transfer. Explain which account holds the saves and achievements, which platform is linked and what you want to change. Request confirmation of what will and will not move.
- Review privacy choices separately. Read EA’s current privacy policy and the platform operator’s notice if your concern is personal information rather than game access.
How to assess the impact on a particular EA game
Because EA’s account, platform and online arrangements differ by title, evaluate a specific game using these questions:

What the acquisition does—and does not—tell you
The acquisition confirms who owns EA. It does not by itself answer whether a particular game will receive updates, become available on another platform, change its monetization, lose an online mode or continue operating for a particular period.
Those outcomes are separate business and product decisions. The current User Agreement establishes a licensed-access model; EA Help explains that saves and achievements are account-linked; the privacy policy describes legally qualified data-transfer circumstances; and the legal disclosures describe a notice process for retiring online features. None of those documents promises permanent availability for every product.
For now, the safest interpretation is straightforward: keep your existing EA Account, avoid unnecessary unlinking or merging, preserve recovery information and evaluate any future change through the notice for the specific game and platform. A corporate ownership change becomes a player-impacting change only when EA or a platform communicates a concrete alteration to access, data handling or service operation.
