Official documentation does not describe an automatic deletion, conversion into points, or collection-wide reset at launch. Copies remain in your in-game collection unless you deliberately use a documented feature such as flair, eligible trading, or sharing.
What does change is the way the new expansion is organized. It receives its own expansion code, pack points stay tied to the expansion that produced them, and favorited booster packs are reset when a new booster pack is added. Those account and preference changes are separate from ownership of cards you already collected.

What changes when a new expansion launches
The new set gets a separate expansion identity
Pokémon TCG Pocket identifies expansions with separate codes. The Gameplay FAQ gives examples such as A1, A1a, and A2. A newly released set therefore enters the game as its own expansion rather than being merged invisibly into the previous set.
This matters when you look at pack points, choose which expansion applies to a card, or check whether a card is eligible for a particular action. The expansion code is an organizational label; it is not a signal that cards from an older set will be removed.

Pack points remain locked to the expansion that earned them
Pack points are not a universal currency shared by every set. Points earned by opening packs from one expansion can be exchanged only for cards appearing in that same expansion, according to Pokémon Support’s Gameplay FAQ and pack-points guidance.
For example, points earned from A1 packs remain usable for eligible A1 cards. When a later expansion such as A2 arrives, those A1 points do not become A2 points and cannot be used to buy cards that appear only in A2. You need to earn the new expansion’s points through packs from that expansion.
Favorite booster packs are reset
The Gameplay FAQ says that favorited booster packs are automatically reset when a new booster pack is added. This is a preference reset: it changes which packs are marked as favorites. It does not say that owned cards, duplicate counts, or previously earned pack points are erased.

If a card is registered in more than one expansion, the game provides an expansion selector for trade and share actions. That selector lets you identify the expansion context for the transaction instead of assuming that every copy has only one possible set designation.
What does not happen to your duplicate cards
No documented automatic deletion
Official collection, trading, and gameplay guidance does not state that duplicate cards are deleted when a new set launches. Existing copies remain listed in your collection unless you take an action that changes the count, such as trading away a card or sharing it.

No documented automatic conversion into pack points
A new set is not described as triggering a sweep that turns extra copies into pack points. Pack points come from opening booster packs and are associated with the expansion that generated them. The documentation does not establish a launch-time exchange in which old duplicates are converted into a new balance.
No collection-wide reset
The reset mentioned in the FAQ concerns favorited booster packs. It should not be interpreted as a reset of My Cards. Your owned cards, including extras from older expansions, stay available for the game’s documented uses.
The official sources also do not promise a universal automatic conversion or compensation rule for every future expansion. A later event or patch could introduce a special mechanic, so the news notice attached to each release is the final authority for that release.
How duplicate cards can be useful
Spend extra copies on flair
The Pokémon Company guide, A Guide to Collecting Cards and Using Wonder Picks, says that players with many copies of a card can use them to obtain flair. Flair is a cosmetic enhancement, so this option trades surplus copies for a visual collectible rather than for a new card or a universal currency.
Before spending copies, decide how many you want to retain. A duplicate used for flair is no longer available as a spare for a deck, trade, or share action. The value is therefore personal: flair may be worthwhile for a card you collect heavily, while retaining copies may be more useful for a card you expect to transfer or play.

Trade eligible copies
Trading can reduce the number shown for a card in My Cards, but eligibility rules apply. The official Trading FAQ describes requirements such as matching rarity. Cards that already have flair must also be traded under the corresponding flair conditions.
These rules mean that having two copies is not by itself enough to guarantee a trade. Check the card’s rarity, whether flair is attached, and the expansion context shown by the in-game selector when a card is registered in more than one expansion.
Share cards through the game’s sharing feature
Sharing is another documented action that can reduce the count displayed in My Cards. It is distinct from trading: the recipient and the applicable sharing rules determine whether a particular card can be shared. Treat a shared copy as transferred out of your collection when deciding how many spares to keep.
Flair remains after the last copy is given away
The Trading FAQ states that flair does not disappear when you give away your last copy of a card. However, you cannot view that flair while you own no copy of the card. It becomes viewable again after you obtain another copy.
This is an important distinction when planning transfers. Giving away the last copy can remove the card from your current collection display, but it does not erase the flair record described by the FAQ.

Choosing what to do with duplicates
Use four questions to evaluate an extra copy: its retention value for decks and future trades, its cosmetic value as flair, the transfer rules that apply, and the lock-in of any related pack points.
| Option | Retention value | Cosmetic value | Transfer considerations | Resource lock-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the copy | Preserves a spare for decks, later trades, or future sharing | No immediate flair benefit | No eligibility check is needed until you transfer it | Does not change pack-point balances |
| Obtain flair | Consumes the copies required by the flair action | Turns surplus copies into a cosmetic item | The spent copies cannot be traded or shared afterward | Does not move points between expansions |
| Trade | Replaces the copy with whatever you receive under the trade rules | Flair conditions must correspond when applicable | Rarity and expansion selection can determine eligibility | Pack points are unaffected |
| Share | Removes the shared copy from your count | No automatic flair conversion is documented | Use the game’s sharing eligibility and expansion selection | Pack points are unaffected |
Keep copies when flexibility matters
Retain extras if you still need the card for a deck, want a spare for a future trade, or are uncertain about upcoming transfer rules. A new expansion does not create a deadline that forces you to spend older duplicates.
Choose flair when the copy is genuinely surplus
Flair is the clearest documented use for a large stack of identical cards. It is most sensible when you have already set aside the copies needed for play and possible transfers and care more about the cosmetic result than another tradeable card.
Trade or share only after checking eligibility
Before confirming a transfer, inspect rarity and flair status. If the game offers an expansion selector because the card appears in multiple expansions, choose the applicable expansion rather than assuming the oldest or newest listing is used automatically.
How pack points work across old and new sets
Points are earned and spent within one expansion
Pack points track the expansion whose packs produced them. Their spending pool is therefore set-specific: points from one expansion can purchase cards appearing in that expansion, not cards introduced exclusively by another expansion.
Best Value
What to do when a new set appears
- Identify the expansion code. Confirm whether the pack belongs to the new code, such as A2, rather than an earlier code such as A1.
- Check the points screen for that expansion. Treat the displayed balance as belonging to the selected expansion, not as a game-wide balance.
- Decide whether to spend older points. Use older points on cards from their original expansion if you want them; saving them does not make them valid for cards exclusive to the new set.
- Earn new-set points through new-set packs. Points associated with the new expansion come from opening packs from that expansion.
What to check on launch day
The documented mechanics give you a reliable baseline, while the in-game release notice can disclose event-specific changes. Use this checklist when a new booster pack or expansion is added:
- Open the game’s news or announcement panel and read the notice attached to the release.
- Confirm the expansion code shown for the new booster pack.
- Review My Cards to make sure older cards and their duplicate counts are still present.
- Check your favorite-booster selections, because adding a booster can reset those favorites.
- Open the pack-points view for each relevant expansion and verify which cards that balance can buy.
- For a card listed in multiple expansions, use the expansion selector before starting a trade or share action.
- Review rarity and flair requirements before attempting a trade.
If your duplicate count changes after you deliberately trade, share, or spend copies on flair, that is the result of that action rather than evidence of a set-launch deletion. If an announcement describes a special event conversion, follow that notice’s terms; the general FAQs do not promise such a conversion for every release.
The practical answer to common launch questions
“Do my old duplicate cards disappear?”
Not under the behavior described by the official documentation. They remain in your collection until you use a feature that transfers or spends them.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“Are old duplicates converted into points?”
No automatic duplicate-to-point conversion is documented. Pack points remain tied to the expansion whose packs generated them.
“Can I use old pack points on the new expansion?”
No. Points from an expansion can be exchanged only for cards appearing in that same expansion.
“Should I save extras for trading or flair?”
Keep enough copies for decks and possible transfers, then consider flair for genuinely surplus copies. Trading requires the applicable rarity and flair conditions, while sharing follows its own eligibility rules.
“What if I give away my last copy after unlocking flair?”
The flair remains, but it cannot be viewed until you obtain another copy of that card.
