The practical result would depend on what changed: hardware compatibility, a title’s store listing, online servers, required authentication, or the terms of a PlayStation Plus entitlement. Sony’s current US pages do not announce that original PlayStation VR support is ending.
The biggest immediate limitation is hardware. Original PS VR and PS VR2 are separate platforms; Sony says there is no compatibility between them. Some original PS VR games can still be used with an original headset on PS5 through a PlayStation Camera adapter, while a PS VR2 upgrade is a separate, title-specific offer.

There is no confirmed PS VR shutdown in Sony’s current US guidance
Sony’s official US support and terms pages reviewed on October 13, 2026, do not announce an end date for original PlayStation VR support. They do, however, describe rights and compatibility rules that matter if support is reduced later. Treat “support ends” as a conditional scenario rather than a confirmed event.

- Sony stops manufacturing or selling a headset or adapter.
- A game stops receiving patches or is removed from the PlayStation Store.
- A publisher disables online servers or account authentication.
- A console no longer receives software needed by a particular title.
- A new headset, such as PS VR2, does not support the older library.
Those events have different effects. None automatically means that every purchase is erased, and none guarantees that every purchased title remains playable forever.
Keeping a purchase is different from being able to play it
A digital purchase is associated with your PlayStation account, but access to the software can still depend on licensing checks, downloads, updates, hardware, and servers. Sony’s US PlayStation Terms of Service, section 13, says: “For any Content that uses online servers, we make no commitment to continue to make those servers available.” That is a general term, not a PS VR shutdown announcement. It means you should not treat an account listing as a promise that every online feature will operate indefinitely.
For a title with a genuine offline mode, the likely practical outcome can be better than for a game whose menus, matchmaking, or progression require a server. Only the publisher’s current documentation for that specific game can establish which functions remain available. A server closure can therefore disable a mode while leaving an installed, offline portion usable; another game may fail to launch or authenticate without its service. The general terms do not decide that question for every title.
Downloads after a store or support change
If a game remains attached to your account, a delisting does not necessarily remove the entitlement. It can nevertheless become harder to use if the download is no longer offered, a console is replaced, or the title requires a server that has been retired. Keep a compatible console, record the exact edition and add-ons you own, and check the publisher’s notices before assuming a future re-download will work.

Patches, DLC and new versions are covered separately
Sony’s Software EULA states that its software terms also cover patches, updates, DLC, upgrades, and new versions. It describes virtual content, including in-game items and currency, as licensed rather than owned: “Virtual Content is licensed, not owned;” Access to such content can end in specified circumstances. That language should not be expanded into a claim that all purchased base games or DLC are automatically erased when VR hardware support changes. The terms of the individual product and its online service still matter.
Original PS VR and PS VR2 are not interchangeable
Sony’s compatibility page is explicit: “There is no compatibility between PlayStation®VR and PS VR2:” Original PS VR cannot play PS VR2 games, and PS VR2 cannot play original PS VR content. Buying a PS VR2 headset is therefore not a universal replacement for an original PS VR library.

“PS VR support” can therefore refer to the headset, a game’s VR mode, a camera or adapter, a publisher’s updates, or online services. Ask which of those is changing before deciding what you will lose.

Can you still use original PS VR on a PS5?
Sony says an original PS VR headset and games can be used on PS5 with a PlayStation Camera adapter. This keeps a route open for some older-library use, but it does not make the content compatible with PS VR2. Compatibility remains title-specific, so check the game’s own requirements.

- Identify the version you own. Confirm that the game is an original PS VR title, not a PS VR2-only release, and note whether your copy is digital or on disc.
- Confirm your console setup. You need a PS5 and the supported PlayStation Camera adapter, plus the original PS VR headset and its required accessories. Adapter availability can change, so verify current stock and regional eligibility.
- Check the game’s requirements. Look at the game’s PlayStation Store page, publisher support page, or in-game notices for camera, motion-controller, installation and network requirements.
- Install or re-download from the owning account. Sign in to the account that received the entitlement and check your game library. A title supplied by a subscription follows different rules from one purchased outright.
- Test offline and online functions separately. Launch the game without network access if it advertises offline play, then test multiplayer or account-dependent modes while the servers are available.
The adapter solves a hardware connection problem only. It cannot restore a game whose servers have closed, bypass a license check, or turn an original PS VR title into a PS VR2 game.
What a PS VR2 upgrade actually means
Some publishers offer a PS VR2 edition or upgrade, but there is no universal cross-buy rule. Sony’s upgrade guidance says: “Depending on the game, this upgrade may occur at no additional cost, may require a purchase, and may be available for a limited time.”
To check a particular title, open its game hub on PS5 and look for a PS VR2 upgrade offer. Record the price, eligibility conditions, region, and expiration date before accepting it. The offer may apply only to a digital license, only to a particular disc edition, or only to selected owners.
Disc-based upgrade conditions
A disc upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The disc must remain inserted whenever you play the upgraded digital PS VR2 version, because it acts as the license proof. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot satisfy that disc requirement.

Digital and subscription conditions
Digital upgrades are tied to the eligible account and edition. Sony also says games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible unless a particular title says otherwise. Do not assume that owning DLC, a trial, or a subscription copy qualifies you for the base-game upgrade.
DLC transfer is not automatic
An upgrade offer can cover the game software without covering every add-on. Check whether each DLC pack has a PS VR2 version, transfers to the new edition, or must be purchased again. Save files and trophies can also follow title-specific rules; the upgrade page and publisher documentation are the authoritative sources.

The PlayStation Plus catalog exception
Sony’s PlayStation Plus games guidance says catalog titles can have removal dates. If a catalog game leaves the service or your membership expires, you lose access to that base game and its associated DLC or add-ons. If you later resubscribe or buy the base game, separately purchased DLC/add-ons can be used again under Sony’s stated rules. This is different from owning the base game outright: a Plus catalog entitlement is access supplied by the subscription, not a permanent purchase.
Before a catalog removal date, check whether you actually bought the game or merely claimed access through Plus. Buying an add-on does not, by itself, turn the catalog copy of the base game into an owned license.

Online servers and authentication can be the real end point
A headset can remain functional while a game’s online service disappears. Multiplayer, cloud progression, leaderboards, account sign-in, license validation, or downloadable events may require a publisher’s servers. Sony’s general terms warn that server availability is not guaranteed, but they do not identify which offline functions a particular game will retain.
- Read the game’s current server-status or sunset notice.
- Check whether first launch, saved-game loading, or DLC validation requires an internet connection.
- Distinguish a temporary outage from a permanent closure.
- Download updates and add-ons while the title is still supported, when the platform allows it.
- Keep local saves, but do not assume a local save can bypass a required account check.
If a game’s online mode is the reason you bought the DLC, a server closure can make that add-on practically unusable even though the account still records the purchase.
How to decide between keeping original PS VR and moving to PS VR2

Choose based on the games you actually play, not on the assumption that a newer headset includes the older catalog. Keep the original equipment if a favorite title has no PS VR2 version and relies on it.
A practical protection checklist
- Write down each game, edition, region, disc or digital status, and every DLC pack.
- Mark whether the base game is owned outright, supplied by PlayStation Plus, or accessed through another subscription.
- Check the title’s game hub for a PS VR2 upgrade, its price, eligibility and expiration date.
- Confirm that an original PS VR game works with the PS5 and PlayStation Camera adapter combination.
- Read publisher notices for server closures and mandatory online authentication.
- Install available patches and add-ons while the title remains downloadable.
- Keep access to the purchasing account and its recovery methods; do not rely on a shared account you may lose.
- For disc upgrades, retain the disc and use a PS5 with a disc drive.
- Record which DLC was purchased separately from a PlayStation Plus catalog game.
- Check your region’s consumer law and local PlayStation terms, which can differ from Sony’s US pages.
What the current evidence does—and does not—establish
It establishes that original PS VR and PS VR2 are incompatible, that original PS VR use on PS5 is supported with a PlayStation Camera adapter for applicable games, and that PS VR2 upgrades vary by title. It also establishes that PlayStation Plus catalog access can end and that Sony does not promise indefinite availability of online servers.
It does not establish an announced PS VR shutdown date, automatic deletion of purchased games, universal DLC transfer, or a guaranteed offline mode for any unnamed game. For a definitive answer, identify the exact title and edition, then check its publisher’s current support notice and the account entitlement shown on your console.
