A destination browser may import some extensions or let you install compatible versions from the Chrome Web Store, but compatibility is extension-by-extension. Even when the extension software arrives, its settings, saved data, account session, and permissions may not come with it.
The safe approach is to inventory the extensions you use, check each one in the destination browser’s store, import where supported, reinstall anything missing, review permissions, and test important workflows before deleting the old browser profile. Bookmarks, passwords, history, and other profile data require separate migration steps.

What “transferring an extension” actually means
An extension is a browser add-on package that runs inside a particular browser. Switching browsers can involve three different outcomes:

- Manual reinstallation: You find the extension in the destination browser’s official store, or in a compatible Chromium store, and install it yourself.
- No direct equivalent: The extension has no version for the destination browser, or its code is incompatible with that browser’s extension system.
Importing the package is not the same as copying its complete state. Vendor migration instructions describe moving or installing extension software; they do not promise that local preferences, extension databases, saved projects, cookies, tokens, or signed-in sessions will be reproduced. Be prepared to configure the add-on and sign in again.

Extension permissions also belong to the new installation. Review what the extension requests in the destination browser rather than assuming the old approval carries over.
What happens in each major destination browser?

These are support-documentation procedures, not a guarantee for every extension, browser release, operating system, or account. Store listings, extension APIs, permissions, and browser behavior can change, so check the exact listing when you move.
Moving from Chrome to Firefox
Firefox’s importer presents selectable data categories. If extensions are offered, select that category and let Firefox install the extensions for which it has similar versions. The result can be a different package maintained for Firefox rather than the original Chrome package. Compare the extension name and publisher carefully, then open each important add-on to verify its controls and output.
A Chrome-only extension will not become compatible simply because it was selected in an import dialog. If no comparable Firefox listing exists, look for the extension’s official Firefox edition or choose another tool that provides the same function.

Moving from Chrome to Edge
Edge can include extensions as part of its setup import. After setup, open Edge’s extension management area and compare what is present with your inventory. For an extension missing from Edge Add-ons, Microsoft documents using a Chromium-compatible store, including the Chrome Web Store, when Edge permits that installation.
Install missing items one at a time. Confirm the publisher, read the requested permissions, and check that the extension is enabled after installation. A package that installs successfully can still behave differently because websites, privacy settings, or browser policies differ between Chrome and Edge.
Moving from Chrome to Brave
Brave is built on Chromium and says it supports nearly all extensions compatible with Chromium. In the Chrome Web Store, open the intended listing, choose Add to Brave, and inspect the permissions prompt before confirming. Repeat the process for extensions that did not appear during any migration flow.

Brave’s guidance specifically separates Firefox add-ons from Chromium extensions: Firefox add-ons are not compatible with Brave. Someone moving from Firefox should search for a Chromium version or an alternative rather than attempting to copy the Firefox add-on files.

Will extension settings and logins move too?
Do not treat an extension’s presence in the new browser as proof that its state transferred. The extension may store preferences in browser-local storage, keep data in a browser profile, or rely on an account session that is represented by cookies or tokens. A fresh installation can therefore open with default settings even when the extension itself is available.
After installing an extension, check the items that affect your work:
- Account sign-in and subscription status.
- Custom rules, lists, shortcuts, or site-specific settings.
- Connected services and approved websites.
- Local files or projects the extension manages.
- Toolbar placement, enabled/disabled state, and per-site access.
The extension maker may provide its own export, sync, or account-recovery procedure. Use that documentation when available. Otherwise, record important settings in the old browser before switching and recreate them manually in the new installation.
Extensions are separate from bookmarks, passwords, and history
A browser’s extension importer does not automatically migrate every part of your profile. Treat these as separate workstreams:

- Bookmarks: Export or import them using the source and destination browser’s bookmark tools.
- Passwords: Use the destination browser’s supported password-import route or the password manager’s own export and import process.
- History and open tabs: Check whether the destination offers a specific import option; do not infer support from extension migration.
- Extensions: Import or reinstall each compatible add-on, then configure and test it.
Brave’s current support documentation gives a concrete limitation: its described method cannot import Chrome passwords because of the way Chrome encrypts password data. That limitation concerns password migration, not whether a Chromium extension can be installed. Verify the password route for your exact source, destination, and browser versions before removing the old profile.
A low-risk migration procedure
- Create an extension inventory. Write down each extension’s exact name, publisher, purpose, and whether you rely on saved settings or an account. Include extensions that are disabled but still contain useful data.
- Check the destination store first. Search the destination browser’s official extension store. For Chromium-based destinations that support it, check the Chrome Web Store as well. Match the publisher and listing details so you do not install an imitation.
- Record settings before changing browsers. Note custom rules, keyboard shortcuts, connected accounts, and any extension-specific export procedure. Take screenshots only when they do not expose passwords, recovery codes, or private data.
- Run the browser’s import flow. During Firefox or Edge setup, select the extension category when it is offered. Let the browser finish importing before judging which items are available.
- Compare the result with your inventory. Open the destination browser’s extension manager and mark each item as installed, missing, or replaced by an alternative. An icon appearing in the toolbar is not enough; open the extension’s settings page too.
- Install missing compatible extensions. Use the verified store listing. In Brave, the documented Chrome Web Store action is Add to Brave. In Edge, use the Edge Add-ons listing or the compatible Chromium-store route Microsoft documents when the extension is absent from Edge Add-ons.
- Review permissions at installation. Read requests for access to browsing activity, website content, tabs, downloads, or other data. Install only when those permissions match the extension’s purpose.
- Reconfigure and sign in. Restore settings, reconnect services, and authenticate again where required. Treat unexpected requests for credentials or recovery codes as a reason to pause and verify the listing.
- Test essential workflows. Use the websites, documents, or tasks for which you depend on the extension. Check both normal operation and edge cases, such as private windows, multiple profiles, downloads, or site-specific rules, if those matter to you.
- Keep the old browser temporarily. Do not uninstall it or erase its profile until bookmarks, passwords, extension settings, and critical workflows have been verified independently.
How to handle common failure cases
The extension does not appear in the destination store
First confirm the exact name and publisher. Then check whether the developer offers a destination-specific edition or documents a replacement. Firefox users may find that no similar Firefox version exists; Brave users cannot install Firefox add-ons directly. If there is no compatible edition, preserve the old browser until you have tested a substitute.
The importer reports success but the extension is missing
Open the destination browser’s extension manager and compare it with your inventory. Import routines can be selective, and Edge’s documentation specifically advises inspecting what arrived and installing missing items individually. Search the destination store rather than repeating the import indefinitely.

The extension installs but does not work
Check that it is enabled, that the destination browser allows it on the current site, and that you installed the intended publisher’s listing. Recreate custom rules and sign in again. If the extension depends on a browser capability that differs between Chromium and Firefox, look for a browser-specific version or a documented limitation from the extension maker.
The extension works but lost its settings
Assume the new installation started with a clean profile unless the extension’s own sync or export feature confirms otherwise. Restore settings from your notes or an official backup, then verify the result on a test site before relying on it for important work.
You are asked for permissions you do not recognize
Stop and read the permission explanation. Compare the request with the extension’s stated function and publisher. If the listing, publisher, or requested access does not match your records, do not install it; search again using the exact extension name and verify the source.
How to choose whether to switch now
Use these decision points before closing the old browser:

- Destination support: Does the browser provide an extension import flow, or will every add-on require manual installation?
- Exact availability: Is each essential extension listed for the destination, and is the publisher the same?
- Compatibility route: Can the destination use a compatible Chromium store, or does it require a browser-specific edition?
- State recovery: Can you export or recreate settings, and do you know how you will sign in again?
- Profile migration: Have you separately planned bookmarks, passwords, history, and open work?
- Verification time: Can you run real tasks in the new browser before deleting the old profile?
No official support source reviewed for this topic supplies a universal transfer-success percentage. Compatibility is determined by the destination browser, the extension’s available edition, its permissions and APIs, and the particular version you install. A short inventory and a staged test are more reliable than assuming that a browser switch will reproduce your old setup.
Bottom line
Some Chrome extensions can move through a browser’s importer, while others must be reinstalled or replaced. Firefox requires a similar Firefox version; Edge can import extensions and offers a compatible Chrome Web Store route for missing items; Brave supports nearly all Chromium extensions through its Add to Brave flow but not Firefox add-ons. In every case, verify permissions, expect to reconfigure or sign in again, test essential tasks, and migrate passwords and other profile data separately.
