You can keep using an eligible existing model, but the delayed model may remain absent from the model picker until its rollout reaches your plan and account. The published release notices do not promise an automatic cancellation, pause, refund or credit simply because a launch moved.
The immediate effect of a postponed ChatGPT release
A postponement is primarily an availability event, not a subscription event. Your Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise plan does not automatically terminate because an announced model is delayed. The account continues to follow the plan terms that applied before the announcement, including its eligible model list, usage limits and any fallback behavior OpenAI has documented.

That means two things can be true at once: you are still a paying subscriber, and you cannot use the model you expected to receive. A launch announcement describes intended availability; the model picker on your account is the practical test of what you can use now.
Your subscription usually remains active
Nothing in the researched OpenAI release and retirement notices says that postponing a model automatically cancels or pauses a paid plan. Unless you cancel through the normal subscription controls, the plan remains subject to its ordinary renewal and billing terms. A delayed feature does not, by itself, change the renewal date or convert the account to a free plan.

Billing normally follows the existing terms
The release notices do not establish an automatic refund, account credit or prorated adjustment for a postponed model. Whether a billing remedy is available depends on the applicable subscription terms and, potentially, a specific support announcement about the incident. Treat a delay and a billing dispute as separate questions: first determine what your account can access, then ask support about any remedy under the terms governing your purchase.
You can keep using an available model
If an older or alternative model is still listed for your account, you can continue using it while the new release is pending. The exact choices depend on your plan and account eligibility. A model that remains visible is available under the limits attached to your tier; a model that is not visible has not necessarily been canceled, because staged rollout or account controls may be the reason.
Why one subscriber sees a model before another
OpenAI documents staged and plan-dependent rollouts. Availability can vary during rollout, and managed-workspace access can depend on administrator settings, according to the OpenAI Help Center’s Model Release Notes. Consequently, two people who both pay for ChatGPT may see different model lists or receive the same model on different dates.
Staged rollout timing
A release can be progressive rather than simultaneous. OpenAI’s availability notice gives GPT-6 as an example, stating that it is rolling out to eligible Pro, Plus, Enterprise and Business users. “Rolling out” does not mean every eligible account has access at the same moment. During that period, absence from your picker is evidence of your current eligibility or rollout status, not proof that the release was abandoned.

Plan tier and eligibility
Paid tiers do not necessarily share an identical model set. A plan may qualify for a model while imposing different message caps, context limits or fallback rules from another tier. Eligibility can also be limited to particular account types or stages of a rollout. Check the model picker and your plan page together rather than assuming that another subscriber’s screen is the standard for your account.
Business and Enterprise administration
In a Business or Enterprise workspace, an administrator can affect which models appear or which model is selected by default. If a personal account shows a model but the same user cannot select it inside a managed workspace, switch to the intended workspace and ask its administrator to review model permissions and defaults. Workspace policy can explain a difference that has nothing to do with your payment status.
Postponed, staged, retired and API changes are different
Use the terminology in the notice before drawing conclusions. A postponed launch has not reached the announced availability date. A staged rollout is already progressing but has not reached every eligible account. A retirement removes a model from the specified product after a stated date. An API change concerns a separate developer service and does not automatically describe what happens inside ChatGPT.

OpenAI has explicitly stated in a retirement notice that listed retirements “apply to ChatGPT only; there are no changes to the API.” That wording is a reminder not to infer API availability from a ChatGPT rollout or retirement notice, or vice versa.

What to do when the expected model is missing
- Open the model picker. Start a new chat and inspect the models shown for the account or workspace you are currently using. If the delayed model is absent, note which alternatives remain available.
- Verify the plan page. Open your account’s plan or subscription page and confirm the tier and renewal status. Interface labels can change, but the relevant information is the page that identifies your current ChatGPT plan.
- Check the active workspace. If you can switch between a personal account and a Business or Enterprise workspace, compare the picker in each. A managed workspace may intentionally restrict models.
- Ask the workspace administrator. For Business or Enterprise, request confirmation of model permissions, defaults and any staged-rollout restrictions. An administrator setting can hide a model even when the underlying plan is eligible.
- Read the current release notice. Look for wording such as “rolling out,” an eligibility list, a start date, a postponement, or a retirement date. Those terms tell you whether waiting is expected or whether the model has been withdrawn from ChatGPT.
- Continue with an available model. Select the model that remains listed and work within its displayed limits. Do not assume that an unavailable model can be enabled by repeatedly signing out, reinstalling an app or changing a device.
- Contact support for account-specific problems. If the plan page shows an entitlement that the picker does not reflect, provide your plan, workspace, account region if relevant, the model-picker result and the wording of the release notice. Ask separately about access and billing.
What happens when you reach a model limit
A postponed release does not remove the limits attached to the models you can currently use. Limits can vary by plan and may change with demand. When OpenAI documents fallback behavior, it can preserve access without giving you the unreleased model.
For example, OpenAI’s Model Release Notes state that, for paid users, GPT-5.4 mini “will be used as a fallback for GPT-5.4 Thinking when rate limits are reached, helping with continued access to reasoning capabilities during high usage.” This is a documented fallback relationship, not a promise that every plan receives every fallback. The applicable plan and the model notice control what happens on your account.
If a limit is reached, check the message shown in ChatGPT and the models offered afterward. A fallback may have different capabilities or output behavior from the model you selected. Save important work before switching, and confirm the active model when a task depends on a particular reasoning or tool capability.

Will you still be charged while waiting?
Unless you cancel, your subscription normally continues according to its existing billing cycle and terms, even if the expected model has not arrived. The researched release pages do not state that a postponement automatically stops renewal. They also do not publish a universal refund or credit rule for delayed launches.

If you believe the delay means the service no longer meets your needs, review the cancellation and billing terms for the channel through which you subscribed. Keep the confirmation of any cancellation. If you request a refund or credit, describe the delayed release, your plan and the relevant dates; support can then apply the terms that govern your account. Do not treat a support request as proof that a credit is guaranteed.

Not necessarily. ChatGPT and the API are separate products with separate availability and retirement notices. A model can be delayed, rolled out or retired in ChatGPT while API availability follows a different schedule. Conversely, an API announcement does not automatically add or remove a model from the ChatGPT picker.
Read the scope sentence in the notice. If it says the change applies to ChatGPT only, it does not establish an API change; OpenAI has used that exact distinction in retirement documentation. Developers should consult the API-specific announcement and model documentation rather than relying on what appears in a ChatGPT account.
How to interpret common subscriber situations
“I have Plus, but the new model is not listed.”
Confirm that the release is not still staged and that your account is included in the eligible tiers. Then check whether you are viewing a managed workspace instead of your personal account. Until the model appears in the picker, use an available model; the absence alone does not show that your subscription is defective.
“Someone else on the same plan can use it.”
That can occur during progressive rollout. Compare account eligibility, workspace, administrator controls and the exact release notice before assuming unequal billing treatment. A staged rollout can produce different access dates among otherwise similar subscribers.
“The announcement says the model is postponed. Should I cancel?”
Cancellation is a personal value decision, not an automatic consequence of the announcement. First verify what your current plan still provides, when the next renewal occurs and whether the model is merely delayed. If you cancel, follow the normal subscription process and retain the confirmation; a postponement itself does not create an automatic cancellation.
“The model disappeared after I reached a limit.”
Check whether the notice documents a fallback. Paid users may be routed to a specified fallback model when a reasoning model’s rate limit is reached. That behavior can preserve continued use while changing the model handling your request.
A practical decision checklist
- Access: Is the model in your current picker, or is the rollout still staged?
- Eligibility: Does your plan tier appear in the release’s eligible list?
- Workspace: Are administrator settings affecting a Business or Enterprise account?
- Continuity: Which existing model or documented fallback can you use now?
- Billing: Have you checked the plan’s renewal and cancellation terms?
- Scope: Does the notice concern ChatGPT, the API, or both?
- Remedy: Is there a specific support announcement granting a refund or credit, rather than an assumption that one is automatic?
The practical bottom line is straightforward: a delayed major release generally leaves your ChatGPT subscription and its existing access rules in place. Wait for the rollout if the announced model is still pending, use an available model or documented fallback meanwhile, and handle cancellation or billing requests under the terms for your account rather than expecting an automatic remedy.
