Captured carbon dioxide (CO2) is usually dried, compressed or refrigerated, transported to a suitable site, and injected into deep geological formations. It can remain underground when the storage formation and its sealing layers contain it, the wells and pressure are managed, and monitoring is designed for the site. That makes storage a risk-managed process, not a guarantee that every formation or project is safe.
What happens to CO2 after capture?
Capture separates CO2 from an industrial or other source. The gas is then prepared for transport and either sent to a place where it can be used or delivered to a geological storage site. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says use accounts for only a small fraction of captured CO2 today, while most captured CO2 over the coming decades is expected to be stored.

- Capture and separate: CO2 is separated from the source stream.
- Condition: Water is removed to reduce corrosion risk, and the CO2 is compressed or refrigerated to make transport practical. The exact conditioning depends on the transport route and project.
- Transport: Pipelines are the usual method; ships, rail and trucks can also move CO2.
- Use or inject: At its destination, CO2 may be used in products or injected into a selected geological formation.
- Monitor: For storage projects, monitoring tracks the subsurface and surrounding areas across the project lifecycle.
Where is CO2 stored underground?
DOE identifies depleted or active oil and gas reservoirs, unmineable coal seams, and deep saline reservoirs as possible geological storage settings. The category alone does not establish that a particular site is suitable. A project needs a storage complex whose properties can retain CO2 and withstand injection.
What makes a formation suitable?
The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) describes a suitable complex as having a porous, permeable storage zone at an appropriate depth, overlain by a confining zone with sealing layers. The formation and seals must have adequate integrity. In practical terms, the storage rock must have space for injected CO2 and allow it to move through the formation, while overlying layers must limit its upward migration. Site evaluation also has to consider the wells and subsurface conditions that could provide pathways or affect containment.

- Compatible with Tesla Model Y Accessories 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 2027 — legacy all trims; Juniper Premium & Performance; not the 2026 Standard base model. Replacement front intake filter kit for the vehicle's HVAC system (under the hood, inside the frunk) — not the in-cabin filter. For Model Y only.
- Traps dust, pollen, and PM2.5 — HEPA melt-blown layer captures fine particles, activated carbon reduces common cabin odors for fresher air.
- Multi-layer filtration in sequence — PET pre-filter traps larger debris, HEPA melt-blown captures fine dust and pollen, activated carbon reduces odors, PET support layer keeps structure stable. Each layer does one job, so nothing gets through unfiltered.
- No airflow compromise — precision-folded pleats maximize filtration area without restricting HVAC airflow, so cooling and heating stay crisp.
- 4-pack complete set — Includes 2 HEPA Filter 2 Carbon Filter, all 4 filters mount at the same time.
How does CO2 stay underground?
One important process is structural trapping. Injected CO2 can move through pores in the storage rock under buoyancy; an impermeable sealing layer above the reservoir can stop that upward movement. NETL also describes other trapping mechanisms. These processes can work together, and their relative importance depends on the rock, fluids and time. A seal is therefore central to containment, but it is not the only factor considered when evaluating storage behavior.
What does safe storage require?
NETL says the accumulated evidence suggests CO2 storage is safe when sites are well selected, designed and operated appropriately. The condition matters: this is not a claim that every site is safe in all circumstances or that leakage is impossible.

Safety work addresses the possibility that CO2 or brine could migrate out of the intended storage complex, as well as physical or chemical changes underground. Wells matter because a well that does not maintain its integrity can become a migration pathway. NETL describes work on detecting and addressing leakage and on materials intended to help maintain well integrity. Project design and operation also need to manage injection and subsurface pressure.

Monitoring plans are developed for the site and cover the periods before, during and after injection. They can track where the CO2 plume is moving, whether it remains contained, pressure and other physical changes, and signs of migration beyond the storage complex. Not every project will use every method; the monitoring approach is tailored to the site and the question being investigated.

What monitoring methods can show
- Atmospheric sensors and near-surface checks: Atmospheric measurements and soil, groundwater or surface-water geochemistry can help identify changes outside the deep storage zone.
- Surface measurements: Surface displacement monitoring can detect changes in ground movement associated with subsurface activity.
- Wells and downhole measurements: Well logging, downhole instruments and fluid sampling provide information from within or near the storage formation. Tracers can also help investigate fluid movement.
- Geophysical surveys: Seismic imaging, gravity and electrical methods can help characterize the subsurface and track changes.
Many subsurface methods do not measure CO2 directly. They detect changes such as seismic velocity, electrical resistivity or formation-fluid chemistry, then use those signals to infer CO2 behavior. Interpreting measurements in context is important: a detected change is evidence to investigate, not by itself proof of leakage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What has been reported about storage safety?
A 2020 DOE/NETL review reported that DOE-supported and other projects injected more than 25 million metric tons of CO2 in 2019. The review said those projects had shown no adverse impacts to human health or the environment; it also reported that, at the time of publication, no DOE-supported project had observed migration outside its intended storage reservoir or confining cap rock. These are dated findings about the projects covered by that report, not a current global total or a guarantee about other sites or future operations.
