Once the cells warm, much of that performance returns. Extreme heat is the larger long-term threat: it accelerates chemical reactions that permanently reduce capacity, especially when a battery remains highly charged. At temperatures beyond a product’s specified limits, heat can also trigger thermal runaway and fire.
The size and reversibility of the effect depend on battery chemistry, state of charge, charge or discharge rate, exposure time, insulation and the pack’s heating, cooling and control systems.

Cold and heat affect a battery in different ways
Temperature changes do not alter every battery by the same amount, but the broad pattern is consistent for rechargeable batteries, including the lithium-ion packs used in phones, laptops, power tools and electric vehicles.
| Aspect | Extreme cold | Extreme heat |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate capacity | Usable energy and voltage fall while the cells are cold; much of the loss can recover after warming. | Capacity may appear normal initially, but elevated temperature accelerates permanent degradation. |
| Power delivery | Higher internal resistance reduces acceleration, peak output and device runtime. | Power can be limited by the battery-management system (BMS) to control temperature and protect cells. |
| Charging | Charging acceptance decreases; the BMS may slow or block charging until the cells warm. | Charging may be reduced or stopped when cell temperatures exceed safe limits. |
| Long-term effect | Typical cold-weather performance loss is temporary, although repeated operation outside limits can still cause damage. | Heat speeds calendar and cycle aging, causing permanent capacity fade. |
| Most stressful condition | High-rate discharge or charging while the cells are still cold. | High temperature combined with a high state of charge and long exposure. |
| Primary protection | Cell heaters, insulation, sheltered parking and preconditioning. | Cooling systems, shade, ventilation, lower charge levels and temperature monitoring. |
As Matthew Keyser of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) summarized in its Battery Thermal Characterization abstract, “High temperatures degrade batteries faster while low temperatures decrease their power and capacity, affecting vehicle range, performance, and cost.”

What extreme cold does to battery capacity
Slower ion movement raises resistance
Below 0°C (32°F), the electrolyte becomes more viscous. Ions move less easily between the electrodes, so internal resistance rises. Under load, more of the battery’s voltage is consumed inside the cells rather than delivered to the device. A battery can therefore show a substantial state of charge while supplying less usable energy and power.
Range and runtime fall while the cells are cold
A Chacko and Chung analysis cited by NREL reported usable energy at −10°C (14°F) at 75% of the usable energy measured at 25°C (77°F). That is a result for the stated test condition, not a universal promise for every chemistry, device or vehicle. Wind, speed, tire condition, cabin heating and battery age can make the observed range loss larger or smaller.
Electric vehicles also spend energy warming the battery and passenger compartment. In one NREL simulation at −10°C, battery thermal-management demand reached up to 0.15 kWh and cabin HVAC demand reached 0.2 kWh. Those figures describe that simulation rather than a fixed allowance for every model.

Cold cells cannot accept charge as quickly as warm cells. A BMS may reduce regenerative braking, cap fast-charging current or refuse charging until sensors report a safe temperature. The same controls can limit acceleration or peak tool output. These limits are protective behavior, not proof that the battery has permanently lost the displayed percentage of capacity.

Warming restores much of the temporary loss
When the pack returns to its normal operating temperature, ion transport and resistance move closer to their usual values. Range, voltage and power generally recover accordingly. A battery that repeatedly remains frozen, is charged outside its specified range or is physically damaged is a different case; follow the manufacturer’s service instructions rather than assuming every loss is reversible.
What extreme heat does to capacity and lifespan
Heat accelerates side reactions
Higher temperature speeds the chemical reactions that consume active materials and increase internal resistance. Unlike a cold-weather range penalty, this aging is permanent. A battery can still reach 100% on its indicator while holding less energy than when new.
Calendar aging and cycle aging compound each other
Calendar aging occurs while a battery sits, even if it is not being cycled. Cycle aging comes from charge and discharge use. Heat accelerates both processes. A pack that is hot and highly charged is under particular stress, so parking a fully charged device or vehicle in a hot environment for long periods is more damaging than the same temperature at a lower state of charge.

Severe overheating can become a safety event
Cooling failures, direct heat sources, internal faults or exposure beyond the maker’s limits can cause a cell to enter thermal runaway. The reaction generates more heat, which can propagate to neighboring cells. Tesla’s Lithium-Ion Battery Emergency Response Guide warns that prolonged exposure of its energy products to temperatures beyond specified limits can drive cells into thermal runaway and result in a fire. Treat any swollen, hissing, leaking, smoking or rapidly heating battery as an emergency; move people away and contact local emergency services or the manufacturer’s instructions.

Why the same air temperature produces different results
Battery chemistry
Electrolyte formulation, electrode materials and cell design determine how strongly resistance and aging respond to temperature. Two packs labeled with the same voltage and capacity can therefore have different cold-weather power and heat-aging behavior.
State of charge
High state of charge increases heat-related calendar stress. In cold weather, a high state of charge does not remove the resistance penalty, although it may leave more energy available once the battery is warm. The BMS uses state-of-charge, temperature and voltage data together when deciding whether to allow charging or high power.
Charge and discharge rate
High current creates more heat inside a cell. Fast charging or hard acceleration at an unfavorable temperature can push a pack toward its protective limits sooner than gentle use.

A short temperature excursion is not equivalent to days of exposure. Insulation, liquid cooling, air cooling, cell spacing, heaters and software controls determine the actual cell temperature, which may differ substantially from the air temperature measured outside a vehicle or device.

Thermal management can change performance and service life
Active heating and cooling are not just comfort features. NREL analysis for the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium found that optimized thermal management can increase electric-drive battery power by more than 10%. Keeping cells in a narrower temperature band also reduces the time they spend in conditions that accelerate aging.
An NREL and National Laboratory of the Rockies analysis described an electric-drive battery example lasting more than 10 years in Minnesota versus about seven years in Arizona without proper thermal management. Those are modeled results under stated assumptions, not a warranty prediction or a universal climate conversion. A well-managed pack in a hot region can outperform a poorly managed pack in a cold region.
How to use and charge a battery in severe cold
- Check the maker’s temperature limits. Use the operating, charging and storage ranges in the manual for the exact battery model. Do not substitute the outdoor air reading for a cell-temperature limit.
- Park under cover when possible. A garage or sheltered space reduces overnight cooling and protects the pack from wind and precipitation.
- Precondition while connected to power. For vehicles and other supported systems, start battery and cabin preconditioning before departure while plugged in. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends warming the vehicle and preconditioning the cabin and battery when the feature is available.
- Allow extra range and charging time. Plan for lower cold-weather range, reduced regenerative braking and a slower initial charge. Keep a larger energy reserve than you would in mild weather.
- Use gentle power until the pack warms. Avoid demanding maximum acceleration or the highest available charging rate immediately after a very cold start unless the BMS explicitly permits it and the manufacturer says it is appropriate.
- Watch for protective limits. A snowflake symbol, reduced power message or low charging current usually indicates temperature protection. Continue only as the manual allows; do not bypass the BMS.
How to reduce heat damage during use
- Keep the battery out of direct sun and localized heat. Use shade, a ventilated garage or covered parking. Do not place a pack beside a heater, stove, engine exhaust or other concentrated heat source.
- Avoid leaving it fully charged in heat. If the manufacturer provides a lower daily-charge setting, use that for routine storage and reserve a full charge for trips that require it.
- Let a hot pack cool before charging when the manual requires it. Fast charging immediately after hard use can add heat faster than the cooling system can remove it.
- Keep cooling paths clear. Do not cover vents, block vehicle radiator openings or operate a device on soft surfaces that trap heat.
- Respond to warnings promptly. Stop using a pack that is unusually hot, swollen, leaking, smoking or emitting an odor, and follow the manufacturer’s emergency guidance.
Storing spare batteries safely
For a removable or spare pack, use the original packaging or a verified fire-resistant storage container sized for that battery. Keep it dry, away from flames and localized heat, and within the manufacturer’s storage temperature and state-of-charge limits. A storage bag is a containment accessory, not a cooling system; it cannot make an overheated battery safe or lower its internal temperature.
Do not store damaged, swollen or wet batteries with healthy packs. Avoid metal objects that can bridge the terminals, and use the protective caps or covers supplied by the maker. If a pack becomes hot without being used, isolate the area if it is safe to do so and contact emergency services or the manufacturer rather than transporting it in a car.

What the battery-management system is doing
The BMS measures cell temperature, voltage, current and estimated state of charge. It can reduce charge current, limit discharge power, disable regenerative braking, start a heater or cooling loop, and shut the pack down. These actions protect cells from conditions that could accelerate aging or create a safety hazard.
A displayed 100% or 0% is a controlled operating point, not a direct measurement of the chemical energy remaining in every cell. As cells age, the BMS periodically recalibrates its estimate, so a sudden change in the displayed range after a temperature shift may reflect estimation and available-power limits as well as true capacity change.
How to tell temporary cold loss from permanent damage
| Symptom | More consistent with cold-related limitation | More concerning for damage or aging |
|---|---|---|
| Lower runtime or range | Appears during freezing conditions and improves after a complete warm-up. | Persists at normal temperatures and worsens over weeks or months. |
| Reduced power | A temperature warning or snowflake indicator clears as the pack warms. | Power remains restricted in a normal-temperature environment without a warning. |
| Slow charging | Current rises after the cells reach their allowed charging temperature. | Charging remains abnormally slow, stops repeatedly or causes heat and odor at normal temperatures. |
| Physical condition | No swelling, leakage, odor or unusual heat. | Swelling, leaking, hissing, smoke, damaged casing or rapid self-heating requires immediate attention. |
If performance does not return after the battery reaches its normal operating temperature, record the conditions and have the pack tested by the manufacturer or a qualified service provider. Do not open a sealed pack or attempt a cell-level repair without the required training and equipment.
What can be concluded about lifespan
There is no single percentage that converts a given temperature or number of hours into a guaranteed capacity loss for every battery chemistry and device. The reported 75% usable-energy figure at −10°C is a particular cold-condition analysis, and the Minnesota-versus-Arizona comparison is an NREL/USABC analysis under stated assumptions. Neither is a warranty forecast.
All rechargeable batteries eventually need replacement. Apple Support describes them as consumables whose capacity and performance decline over time. Temperature management can slow that decline, but it cannot stop normal aging. Use the battery maker’s specified limits, reduce time spent hot and fully charged, warm cold packs before demanding power, and treat any safety symptom as a reason to stop using the battery.
