What happens to animals when a deep-sea food source declines?

When food delivered to the deep ocean declines, animals may have less energy for growth, reproduction, movement and survival. Filter feeders and seabed scavengers can become thinner or grow more slowly; populations may fall if the shortage is severe or prolonged. Predators can then lose prey. The result is not uniform: depth, species, food quality, alternative prey, temperature and the duration of the shortage all determine what happens.

How food reaches the deep sea

Most deep-ocean animals do not live on sunlight-driven production of their own. They depend heavily on organic matter made in surface waters and transported downward. The most widespread pathway is marine snow: flakes made mainly from dead plankton, microbes, mucus and other biological debris. As the particles sink, they collect additional organic material. Animals in the water column can filter the particles, while animals on the seabed scavenge what settles there. NOAA explains this pathway and the factors that change its supply, including surface production, decomposition during sinking and ocean currents: NOAA Ocean Exploration’s marine-snow overview.

A decline can therefore occur at several points. Fewer phytoplankton at the surface may create less material. More decomposition on the way down can leave less usable carbon at depth. Currents can divert the particles away from a habitat. A pulse may arrive at one seafloor site while a neighboring site receives little. “Less food” is consequently a change in an energy pathway, not simply an empty feeding station.

What happens to individual animals first

Lower body condition and slower growth

When incoming energy falls, an animal must allocate more of its stored reserves to basic metabolism. Energy available for tissue production, shell growth or fat storage declines. A juvenile may remain smaller, and an adult may lose mass even if it continues feeding. These effects are most likely in species that depend on a narrow particle or prey supply and have limited ability to move to another feeding ground.

Reduced reproduction

Reproduction is energetically expensive. A food shortfall can delay spawning, reduce the number of eggs or larvae, or lower the condition of offspring. A single poor season need not cause a population crash, but repeated shortages can reduce the number of young entering the population. The timing matters: a shortage during a reproductive season can have a different effect from an equivalent shortage after spawning.

Higher mortality

Animals can draw on stored lipids or other reserves for a while. If the deficit continues, however, starvation risk rises. Individuals that are already stressed by disease, low oxygen, injury or competition may die first. Carcasses and weakened animals can also alter scavenger interactions, temporarily concentrating predators while reducing the number of healthy prey available later.

Movement and behavior changes

Mobile animals may spend more time searching, move into a different depth range or crowd around a remaining food patch. Extra searching costs energy and can expose them to predators. Animals fixed to the seabed, or those adapted to very low food flux, have fewer options and may simply reduce activity.

Food quantity and food quality are different problems

A habitat can receive fewer particles, less nutritious particles, or both. A count of prey alone can therefore mislead: the remaining organisms may contain less lipid or protein per unit of mass.

Change What the animal experiences Likely consequence
Lower quantity Fewer particles or prey arrive at the feeding site. Less energy intake, poorer condition and potentially lower survival or reproduction.
Lower quality Prey remain present but contain less energy or key nutrients. An animal must consume more, spend more time foraging or accept a smaller energy budget.
Short pulse Food is scarce briefly before another delivery arrives. Stored reserves or movement may bridge the gap; effects can be limited if the interval is short.
Persistent shortage Low delivery continues across seasons or years. Accumulating losses in growth, reproduction, abundance and the animals that feed on them.

In the northern Bering Sea, observations from 2002–2018 found unusually low abundances of large, lipid-rich copepods and above-average numbers of smaller, lipid-poor copepods in 2018. That is a change in nutritional quality as well as community composition. NOAA notes that the longer-term consequences were uncertain; the study is described in the NOAA Institutional Repository manuscript and summarized in NOAA Fisheries’ zooplankton account.

Warm water can turn a food shortage into an energy crisis

Food supply is only half of an animal’s energy balance. Metabolism generally rises as temperature rises within an animal’s tolerable range, so the same food ration may no longer cover basic needs. Warming can also change the area where prey are concentrated, forcing animals to travel farther.

The eastern Bering Sea snow-crab decline illustrates this interaction. During and after the 2018–2019 marine heatwave, scientists considered several mortality factors. Juvenile crabs of the same shell width weighed less in 2018 than in 2017, and the area available for foraging was historically small. Laboratory measurements found that snow crabs’ caloric requirements nearly doubled between 0°C and 3°C. NOAA Fisheries lead author Cody Szuwalski described the event this way:

NOAA’s account identifies warming-driven demand, reduced foraging habitat and limited food as interacting pressures. It says, “High temperatures and large population sizes suggest starvation was a likely cause of the decline,” while treating starvation as a likely contributor within a multifactor event, not as a universal explanation for deep-sea populations. More than 10 billion crabs disappeared from that regional stock between 2018 and 2021. The full regional analysis is available from NOAA Fisheries.

How the effects move through a food web

Particle feeders and seabed scavengers

The first consumers to feel a weaker marine-snow flux are those that filter suspended particles or consume freshly deposited organic matter. If they lose condition or become less abundant, less prey is available to fish, crustaceans and other animals higher in the web. The timing can be delayed: a predator may continue finding prey for a while by consuming older individuals, even as recruitment has already weakened.

Predators can experience a larger proportional loss

Predators often need more total energy and have fewer alternative prey than generalist consumers. A small reduction at the base can therefore become a larger reduction in predator biomass after losses accumulate across several links. Dave Kimmel of NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center put the trophic mechanism plainly: “Zooplankton are near the base of the marine food web. If the base changes, we will see changes higher in the foodweb. There will be species that respond better than others,” as reported by NOAA Fisheries.

What models suggest about future global effects

A 2021 study used three Earth-system models to project how climate-driven changes in marine energy transfer could affect consumers. Under a “no mitigation policy” scenario, total consumer biomass was projected to decline 18.5% in 2090–2099 relative to 1986–2005, while predator abundance was projected to decline 21.3%. These are modeled global projections, not measurements showing that every deep-sea community has already declined. The scenario, baseline and results are reported by Pontavice and colleagues in the NOAA-hosted manuscript.

A measured deep-ocean food shortfall

Smith and Kaufmann reported a 52–59% decline between 1989 and 1996 in the ratio of sinking particulate organic carbon supply to sediment-community oxygen consumption in the abyssal eastern North Pacific. The ratio compares food delivery with the oxygen demand of the seafloor community, so a decline indicates that supply was falling relative to biological demand at that site. The seven-year record is important evidence that deep-ocean food balance can change substantially, but it is a historical, location-specific result. A possible connection to changes in surface plankton was an interpretation rather than directly established causation. See the PubMed abstract for the Science study.

Why one food decline does not affect every deep-sea animal alike

  • Feeding strategy: A suspension feeder tied to marine snow is more exposed than a predator that can switch prey.
  • Habitat: A canyon, abyssal plain, seamount and oxygen-poor basin receive different currents and particle fluxes.
  • Reserve capacity: Long-lived animals with stored lipids may survive a short deficit better than small, fast-growing species.
  • Mobility: Mobile animals can search for another patch; attached organisms cannot.
  • Competition: If many consumers depend on the same particles, each may receive less when the supply contracts.
  • Temperature and oxygen: Warming can raise demand, while low oxygen can restrict where an animal can feed.
  • Alternative food: Carrion, microbial production or another prey species may cushion a local shortage, but the substitute may be less nutritious or less predictable.

Can a local food pulse compensate?

Some deep-sea habitats receive concentrated, temporary subsidies. Whale falls are a clear example: a dead whale can support mobile scavengers while soft tissue remains, enrich surrounding sediments for more than a year, and later sustain communities on the skeleton for years to decades. NOAA describes these stages in its whale-fall overview.

Such a carcass can greatly improve conditions for animals near that one site. It does not replace the broad, background supply of marine snow across an ocean basin. A whale fall is therefore a localized refuge or opportunity, not evidence that widespread losses in downward particle flux have been neutralized.

How scientists tell whether food decline is driving an animal decline

Researchers usually combine several measurements instead of inferring starvation from a population count alone.

  1. Measure the input: Sediment traps and water-column sampling estimate how much particulate organic carbon is sinking and what it contains.
  2. Measure the consumers: Surveys record abundance, body mass, size structure, reproductive condition and mortality.
  3. Track demand: Temperature, oxygen and laboratory metabolism indicate how much energy animals require under prevailing conditions.
  4. Check food quality: Species identity, lipid content and size reveal whether remaining prey provide the same nutrition.
  5. Test alternatives: Diet analyses and movement data show whether animals switched prey or moved to another habitat.
  6. Compare time and place: Long records and multiple sites help separate a local pulse from a broad trend.

This approach matters because climate effects often arrive together. A population may decline while food quantity falls, prey quality changes, habitat contracts and metabolic demand rises. Assigning the entire outcome to one factor can overstate what the evidence shows.

How long does recovery take?

There is no universal recovery time. A short interruption may be covered by stored reserves, while a multiyear decline can remove several generations of recruits. Recovery also depends on whether surface production, currents, temperature and prey composition return to prior conditions, and whether predators or competitors have already changed.

The northern Bering Sea work specifically left longer-term effects uncertain. That uncertainty is not a sign that food declines are harmless; it means the available observations do not establish a single timetable that applies to every species or habitat.

What to remember

A decline in deep-sea food usually first reduces the energy available to individual consumers. Body condition, growth and reproduction can weaken, and prolonged deficits can increase mortality. The consequences may then propagate upward, with predators losing prey and total biomass shrinking. Quantity, nutritional quality and metabolic demand must be considered together. Local observations demonstrate what happened in a particular place and time, while global projections describe a modeled scenario; neither should be presented as proof that every deep-sea animal is responding identically.
