Benefits are a separate question: a 2020 NHL/NHLPA memorandum specifies continued NHL health, life and disability coverage for a limited group of players, subject to eligibility and qualifications.
Does an NHL player’s salary go down when he is sent to the AHL?
It can, but not automatically. The NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) distinguishes Paragraph 1 NHL Salary from Paragraph 1 Minor League Salary; together, these are covered by the term Paragraph 1 Salary. The player’s SPC sets the relevant terms, so the word “demotion” alone does not tell you what he earns while assigned. The NHL’s CBA index links the governing agreement and memoranda of understanding.

If an SPC specifies different NHL and minor-league salary amounts, the applicable rate may change for the period covered by those terms. There is no supported league-wide percentage reduction or single “AHL salary” that applies to every player. For a particular player, check the SPC and the assignment dates rather than inferring pay from the roster move.

What do one-way and two-way contracts mean for pay?
“One-way” and “two-way” are useful shorthand, but they are not substitutes for reading the contract. To compare two cases, identify the NHL salary, the minor-league salary, and the terms governing the assignment in each player’s SPC. A one-way label does not by itself answer every benefits question, and a two-way label does not establish a uniform AHL rate for all players.

A June 27, 2025 NHL/NHLPA memorandum addresses minor-league compensation for rookies in the Entry Level System (ELS): those SPCs are deemed two-way, and a schedule limits minor-league compensation by draft year. That is an ELS rookie provision, not a general pay rule for every NHL player. Read the 2025 memorandum.
Do NHL players keep health insurance and other benefits in the AHL?
A July 10, 2020 NHL/NHLPA memorandum says that players assigned to the minors remain entitled to NHL health, life and disability insurance if they have both a one-way SPC and at least 160 NHL games played. For goalies, games dressed count toward the threshold. The memorandum also says offseason coverage continues to the same extent as for other NHL players. The NHLPA’s CBA materials provide access to the agreement documents.

The provision has qualifications. Disability coverage is subject to market availability, and the amount may be reduced for claims incurred while the player is assigned to the minors. The threshold and conditions matter: the cited provision is not a blanket assurance that every player keeps every NHL benefit after an assignment. The available agreement materials cited here do not establish whether later memoranda changed this particular provision, so player-specific or exhaustive current coverage questions should be checked against current CBA/MOU text or confirmed with the NHLPA or Health Fund Office.

The PHPA says its AHL agreement covers minimum salary, per diem, travel, lodging, and health and welfare benefits. Its agreement overview describes off-ice coverage for qualifying opening-night roster players under specified agreement or professional tryout (PTO) status. Those AHL/PHPA provisions should not be confused with NHL/NHLPA coverage. See the PHPA agreement overview.

What changes under the 2026–27 AHL assignment rule?
The NHL says the existing CBA remained in force through the 2025–26 season and that provisions of the new agreement take effect when the 2026–27 season begins. Under the new rule, a player assigned to the AHL must appear in an AHL game before the NHL club recalls him. The NHL says this ends paper assignments in which a player continued traveling with the NHL team and returned after a day. This changes assignment procedure; the announcement does not say it changes salary or benefits. Read the NHL’s 2025 CBA explainer.
The NHLPA announced ratification of a four-year agreement running through the 2029–30 season. See the NHLPA ratification release.

How to check a specific player’s pay and coverage
- Identify the season and assignment dates. The 2026–27 appearance-before-recall rule should not be applied to earlier seasons.
- Check the player’s SPC. Find the NHL salary, any minor-league salary, and the terms that apply during the assignment. Do not infer a figure from one-way or two-way shorthand alone.
- Check benefit eligibility separately. For the cited NHL coverage provision, verify one-way SPC status and NHL games played, then determine whether the specific benefit is health, life or disability and whether its qualifications apply.
- Distinguish NHL from AHL coverage. Confirm which agreement or plan governs the benefit in question; AHL/PHPA coverage is not the same as NHL/NHLPA coverage.
League-wide sources do not disclose an individual player’s full contract terms or benefit enrollment. Without those details, a precise player-specific answer cannot be established.
Do not confuse NHL minimum salary with AHL pay
The NHL’s CBA explainer lists NHL minimum salaries of $850,000 for 2026–27, $900,000 for 2027–28, $950,000 for 2028–29 and $1 million for 2029–30. Those figures are the NHL minimum salary schedule, not AHL compensation or a forecast of what a demoted player receives. The NHL explainer provides the schedule and effective seasons.
