An AHL call-up usually changes which salary rate applies under the player’s existing NHL contract; it does not mean he has signed a new deal or must play in an NHL game before NHL salary can begin. For a recall made before 5:00 p.m. New York time, the NHL/NHLPA CBA says the player’s NHL Paragraph 1 salary starts on the recall date. The result depends on the player’s contract and the applicable CBA rules.
What changes when an AHL player is recalled?
A recall is a transaction under an existing NHL Standard Player’s Contract (SPC). The key pay question is which Paragraph 1 salary rate applies and when it starts—not whether the player has signed a new contract. The CBA’s player notice says that if a player is recalled before 5:00 p.m. New York time on a particular day, his NHL Paragraph 1 salary commences on the date of recall. The NHL/NHLPA CBA player notice ties this salary start to the recall transaction, not to an NHL game appearance.

With a two-way contract, a qualifying recall shifts the applicable rate from the minor-league rate to the NHL rate. With a one-way contract, the salary rate generally does not fall during an AHL assignment. The player’s SPC supplies the individual rates; there is no single call-up amount that applies to every player. The July 2025 NHL/NHLPA memorandum of understanding is available through the official MOU document.

Salary is not the same as waiver eligibility or cap treatment
“One-way” and “two-way” describe salary arrangements; they do not determine by themselves whether a player must clear waivers to be assigned to or recalled from the AHL. Waiver eligibility is a separate CBA question. Likewise, NHL salary commencement should not be treated as a complete answer about a club’s cap charge, cash payment timing, take-home pay, bonuses, taxes, or roster status. Those questions can depend on contract terms and other rules not resolved by the recall salary notice.
What changed under the 2026–27 CBA?
As of October 4, 2026, the new CBA is in effect; its term began September 16, 2026 and runs through September 15, 2030. The NHL’s 2026–27 CBA explainer says that after a player is assigned to the AHL, he must appear in a minor-league game before the NHL club recalls him again. This is an assignment-and-recall procedure; it is separate from the salary rule that links NHL salary commencement to the recall date and cutoff time.

The same NHL explainer lists the league minimum salary as $850,000 for the 2026–27 season, with scheduled increases afterward. That is a league-wide minimum, not the assumed salary of an individual recalled player or a special call-up rate. The NHL’s CBA extension announcement and its CBA and MOU index provide the current agreement materials.

How to check a specific player’s situation
- Find the player’s SPC. Check the contract’s Paragraph 1 salary terms and whether it provides separate NHL and minor-league rates.
- Confirm the transaction and its timing. Establish the official recall date and whether it occurred before 5:00 p.m. New York time; the cited same-day salary rule is expressly limited to recalls before that cutoff.
- Check the current CBA and MOU provisions. Review any relevant recall category, assignment sequence, and waiver rules rather than inferring them from the words “one-way” or “two-way.” The NHL maintains agreement materials at its CBA and MOU index.
Without the player’s contract and transaction details, the exact salary amount, any per-day calculation, waiver requirement, and cap treatment cannot be determined from the general recall rule alone.
