It depends on what “free promotion” means. A temporary sale changes the price shown for a paid app, a promo code gives a specified product away under its terms, and a subscription trial changes billing rather than the app’s download price. When a subscription trial or introductory phase ends, Google Play normally renews it at the base-plan price. For a paid-app sale, check the app’s live Google Play listing and your account because Google’s pricing guidance does not define a universal post-sale entitlement rule.
Start by identifying the promotion
People often use “free promotion” for several unrelated Google Play mechanisms. The wording on the offer screen determines what happens next. Google documents discounted paid-app sales, promo codes and subscription offers separately in its pricing and subscription guidance.

The app’s download page alone cannot tell you whether you have started a subscription. A free download and a free trial are different events: one concerns installation, while the other creates a billing agreement that can renew.
Temporary sale on a paid app
What changes
In a paid-app sale, the developer temporarily lowers the price attached to the app listing. Google Play’s pricing documentation confirms that developers can run discounted sales, but the reviewed guidance does not prescribe one universal “sale ended” behavior for every listing. The developer controls the price and the promotion schedule.

When the promotion period is over, open the app’s live listing while signed in to the account you use on Google Play. The page should show the price currently offered in your country. A sale may end at a stated time, be replaced by another price, or be adjusted by the developer.
What is not guaranteed by the pricing page
Do not assume that every free-sale download remains permanently owned, stays visible in your library, or can always be downloaded again. The pricing material at Google Play’s app-pricing help page confirms sale functionality but does not settle those entitlement questions. If redownloading matters, check the app in your Play Store library and consult the current Google Play account or purchase-help information for your specific account.
How to check the post-sale price
- Open Google Play and search for the exact app name.
- Verify that the developer, icon and package listing are the same app you obtained during the promotion.
- Read the price and any “in-app purchases” or subscription labels on the listing.
- If the price looks stale, wait a few hours and check again; Google notes that price or distribution changes can take time to appear.
- Use the account’s library or order history to see whether Google Play recognizes the earlier transaction or redemption.
Prices can differ by country. Google says local prices may reflect currency conversion, local pricing patterns, taxes and regional prices set by the developer. Two users viewing the same app can therefore see different amounts without either listing being incorrect.

Promo codes are not the same as a sale
A promo code is a redemption mechanism, not a general promise that an app will be free for everyone. Google’s pricing guidance describes codes that can give a paid app, an in-app product or a subscription to a user at no charge. The code may have an expiration date, eligibility rules or a specific product attached to it.

What happens when a code is redeemed
Follow the terms shown when you redeem the code. A code for a paid app is different from a code for a subscription component, and a code for an in-app product does not change the app’s store price. The pricing page does not establish a single access duration or redownload rule for every code type, so avoid treating one code’s result as a rule for all promotions.
Keep the redemption confirmation or order record. If the app later displays a price, check whether you are signed into the same Google account and whether the code applied to the app itself or only to a product inside it.
A permanent change from paid to free cannot be reversed
A developer can change an app’s base price from paid to free. That is a permanent pricing decision for that app identity, not a temporary sale. Google states that once an app is offered free, it cannot later be switched back to paid under the same identity. If the developer wants to charge for a new version, Google requires a new app and a new package name.

Why this matters to users
- If an app was permanently made free, the normal store listing should remain free after any marketing campaign ends.
- A later paid replacement may appear as a separate app rather than a price change to the original.
- Updates, saved data and purchase history may not transfer automatically between two app identities; read the developer’s migration instructions before uninstalling the original.
This rule is separate from a limited-time free sale. A sale can end while the app returns to a paid listing; a permanent switch leaves the original listing free.

Subscription free trials and introductory offers
The billing transition
A subscription trial affects recurring billing, not the one-time price of downloading the app. Google’s subscription documentation says that after discounted offer phases finish, the subscription automatically renews at the base-plan price. A free phase, a discounted introductory phase or several phases can be combined in one offer.
For example, an offer might provide seven days at no charge, followed by a monthly base plan. Unless the subscriber cancels under the stated terms, the first paid renewal is charged when the trial phase ends. An introductory-price phase works the same way: the discounted period ends and the next renewal uses the base-plan price.
Details that must be shown before enrollment
Google Play’s subscription policy says: “Before a user is enrolled in your subscription: You must clearly and accurately describe the terms of your offer, including the duration, pricing, and description of accessible content or services.” The policy also requires clear information about automatic conversion or renewal, the amount that will be charged and how to cancel. Read the offer screen rather than inferring terms from the app’s download price.
Eligibility and regional limits
Not every account sees every offer. Google’s subscription examples show that an offer can be limited to people who have never purchased a subscription in that app and can be restricted to selected regions. A trial visible on one phone or account may therefore be absent for another user.

How to avoid an unexpected charge
- On the offer screen, record the trial or introductory length.
- Check the amount and billing cadence shown after the offer phase, such as monthly or annual.
- Confirm which Google account will be billed.
- Find the cancellation route in Google Play’s subscription settings before accepting.
- Cancel before the stated renewal time if you do not want the base plan to renew, and keep the cancellation confirmation.

The listing still shows “free”
Refresh the listing, confirm the account and check again later. Google says updates to price or distribution can take a few hours to propagate. A cached page, staged rollout or country setting can make an old price appear temporarily.
Different users see different prices
Compare country and account settings first. Regional pricing, taxes, currency conversion and eligibility rules can all change what appears. Subscription offers may be restricted to a region or to users meeting a purchase-history condition.
You expected a trial but see a charge
Open Google Play’s subscription section and inspect the active plan, renewal date and base-plan price. You may have accepted an introductory offer rather than a completely free trial, or the trial may already have reached its renewal date. Check the original confirmation email and the offer terms.
You cannot find an app obtained during a sale
Search the Play Store while signed into the purchasing or redeeming account, then inspect the account’s library and order history. If the app is absent, the pricing page alone cannot prove whether the earlier promotion created a lasting entitlement. Use Google Play’s current account-help process for an account-specific answer instead of assuming that every free promotion has the same redownload policy.
Developer-side timing and pricing context
Google changed how developers manage prices: pricing templates stopped being available for managing products beginning October 27, 2025, and prices must be managed on individual products. This administrative change does not turn a sale into a subscription or alter the renewal rule for an existing subscription, but it explains why a developer may update individual listings at different times.
Because price and distribution updates can take a few hours to appear, the moment a promotion ends on a developer’s schedule may not match the moment every user sees the new listing. Regional price calculations and taxes can also produce different displayed amounts.

- The app page said “sale” or showed a reduced one-time price: treat it as a paid-app price promotion and check the live listing after the stated period.
- You entered a code: follow the code’s product-specific terms; do not infer subscription or ownership rules from another code.
- You entered payment details for a trial: inspect the subscription page, renewal price and cancellation deadline because automatic renewal is expected after offer phases.
- The developer changed the listing from paid to free permanently: the original app remains free; charging again requires a separate app identity.
- The result differs by country or account: check regional pricing, taxes, eligibility and propagation delay before concluding that the listing is broken.
Sources and account-specific limits
The authoritative starting points are Google’s app-pricing documentation, subscription offer documentation and subscription policy. They explain how developers configure prices and how subscription offers renew, but they do not provide one blanket answer for continued ownership after every limited-time free sale. For that question, the user’s Google account, the app’s current listing and any applicable entitlement help are decisive.
The Bottom Line
A free Android-app promotion does not have one universal ending. A paid-app sale requires checking the current listing and account entitlement; a promo code follows its own terms; a permanent paid-to-free switch stays free under that app identity; and a subscription trial normally renews at the base-plan price unless canceled.
