What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If investment becomes harder to obtain, an AI startup may cut costs, seek new capital, sell assets, merge, restructure or close. Customers do not face one automatic sequence, but they can lose service, support or access to data and may need to rebuild workflows elsewhere. The outcome depends on the company’s cash runway, revenue, unit economics, financing options and whether a buyer wants its technology or customer base.
Funding headlines alone cannot tell you that a particular vendor is insolvent or about to shut down. The practical response is to identify critical dependencies, test data exports, keep independent backups and understand your contract’s termination and transition terms before a crisis.

Why a funding slowdown can affect an AI product
Most venture-backed startups spend ahead of revenue to hire engineers, train or access models, acquire customers and build infrastructure. New funding extends the period in which that spending can continue. When investors become more selective, a company that expected another round may have to operate on its existing cash and customer receipts.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That pressure is not the same as immediate insolvency. A startup can have months or years of runway, recurring revenue, a profitable product line or another financing option. Conversely, a large funding announcement does not prove that every company in the sector can raise money. The effect on employees, suppliers and customers depends on the individual company’s finances and contracts.

What current funding figures actually show
Carta’s platform data illustrates why aggregate totals need careful interpretation. In its report published May 29, 2026, Carta recorded $30.4 billion in startup funding on its platform during the first quarter of 2026. More than 60% of each venture-capital dollar raised by companies on that platform went to AI companies.
For all of 2025, Carta reported that companies on its platform raised $119.5 billion, a 16.9% increase from 2024. Yet those companies completed 4,859 new rounds, the lowest annual total in at least six years and 41% below the 2021 high.
| Measure | Reported value | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Carta platform funding, Q1 2026 | $30.4 billion | Funding recorded on Carta’s platform, not every investment worldwide |
| AI share of Q1 2026 venture dollars | More than 60% | Share among Carta-platform companies; it does not mean every AI startup received capital |
| Carta platform funding, 2025 | $119.5 billion, up 16.9% year over year | Aggregate dollars rose among companies represented on the platform |
| New rounds in 2025 | 4,859 | Lowest annual count in at least six years and 41% below 2021 |
The combination—more dollars but fewer rounds—can occur when a smaller number of later-stage or very large deals absorb a greater share of capital. These figures describe Carta’s platform, not the complete startup market, and they are not a forecast of AI-company failures.

What “funding dries up” means for a startup
A funding squeeze usually creates a sequence of management decisions rather than one event. The company first compares its cash runway with expected revenue and unavoidable costs. It may then pursue several paths.
Cost reductions and a narrower product
Management may freeze hiring, reduce marketing, renegotiate suppliers, slow model training or concentrate engineering on the feature most likely to produce revenue. Support hours, service-level commitments and the pace of new releases can fall even while the product remains online.
Another financing attempt
The startup may seek a new equity round or other capital from existing or new investors. A company with paying customers, improving unit economics or defensible technology may raise successfully, but a difficult market can lengthen the process and force less favorable terms. A funding announcement is not proof that the resulting cash will cover every planned project.

Sale, merger or asset transaction
A strategic buyer may want the startup’s engineers, models, patents, contracts or customers. A merger or asset sale can preserve part of the service, but the buyer may also discontinue a product, change its roadmap or move customers to another system. Continuity should be assumed only when the parties have announced it and explained the operating terms.
Restructuring or shutdown
If no financing, buyer or viable operating plan exists, the company can restructure or close. A shutdown can happen quickly after cash is exhausted, although the timing and notice depend on the company’s obligations and local law. Funding trouble is therefore a risk signal, not a reliable closing date.
What shutdown data does—and does not—tell you
CB Insights examined 431 venture-backed companies that publicly shut down since 2023 and excluded companies with a prior exit. In the categorized cases, 70% cited running out of capital, 43% cited poor product-market fit, 29% cited bad timing and 19% cited unsustainable unit economics.

Those categories can overlap. The capital figure describes the final pressure reported in that selected cohort; it is not the probability that an AI company will fail, nor the percentage of AI shutdowns caused by a funding freeze. Product-market fit, timing and unit economics can explain why raising more money or sustaining operations became difficult. A startup with weak demand may run out of cash because customers do not support the required costs, while a promising company can still be caught by a financing gap.
What customers may experience
| Possible outcome | What it can look like for a customer | What cannot be assumed |
|---|---|---|
| Reduced investment | Slower feature releases, fewer integrations, lower model limits or less responsive support | That the service will immediately go offline |
| Interruption or closure | Login failures, disabled APIs, stopped jobs or an unavailable dashboard | The notice period; funding news alone does not establish timing |
| Acquisition or asset sale | New terms, a changed roadmap, altered model behavior or a migration to the buyer’s platform | That a buyer will keep the product unchanged |
| Customer-initiated migration | Moving prompts, records, workflows, model settings, integrations and credentials to another provider | That exports will include every configuration or derived result |
| Data-access dispute | Difficulty retrieving records or obtaining help after termination or insolvency | A universal right to a particular format or recovery service |
AI-specific switching costs
Moving an AI workflow can require more than copying files. Teams may need to recreate prompts, tool calls, evaluation data, retrieval indexes, model-specific settings, rate-limit assumptions and authentication. Integrations can depend on a provider’s API schema or output behavior, so a technically valid replacement may still require testing and redevelopment.

FTC staff, in a January 2025 discussion of selected large cloud-provider and AI-developer partnerships, identified potential switching costs. That observation concerns the partnerships examined there; it should not be generalized to every AI vendor or contract.

Data export, retention and deletion
Your agreement may specify which data you can export, the format, the time window for retrieval and whether the provider supplies migration assistance. It may also govern retention after cancellation and deletion of copies, logs, backups or derived data. UNCITRAL’s 2019 notes on cloud-computing contracts discuss end-of-service commitments, export options and mechanisms that might help retrieve data if a provider becomes insolvent. These are planning considerations, not a guarantee of a particular legal remedy.
Privacy and security obligations
Before and during a transition, determine what information the service holds, how it is used or shared, how long it is retained and how deletion is verified. The Federal Trade Commission’s small-business cybersecurity guidance recommends putting vendor expectations about data use, sharing, retention and deletion in writing. If the system processes personal, health, financial or other regulated information, involve the legal, security or compliance specialist responsible for your jurisdiction and industry.

- Map the dependency. List each business task that relies on the AI service, the owner of that task and the consequence if the service is unavailable for one day, one week or permanently. Include APIs, automations, shared accounts and downstream systems.
- Inventory what must be rebuilt. Identify source data, prompts, system instructions, model and parameter settings, evaluation sets, output records, vector indexes, integration mappings and credentials. Separate information you supplied from provider-generated or derived content, because the contract may treat them differently.
- Test an export now. Use the provider’s current export or API tools and open the files in an independent environment. Check whether the format includes metadata, attachments, relationships, timestamps and version history. Record the time and technical effort required; a theoretical export that cannot be restored is not a tested plan.
- Keep independent backups. Store critical information outside the vendor’s account. FTC guidance identifies cloud storage or an external hard drive as possible backup destinations. Protect copies with access controls and encryption appropriate to the data. A backup preserves information, but it does not replace the service or recreate its integrations.
- Read the contract and service terms. Look for termination notice, suspension rights, export formats, retrieval windows, retention and deletion duties, transition assistance, service-level commitments and any escrow or insolvency mechanism. Save the version that applies to your account, including incorporated policies.
- Document a fallback workflow. Write down manual steps, alternative tools, required credentials, model substitutions and quality checks. Run a small exercise so the team knows who can change DNS records, API keys, webhooks or access permissions if the vendor stops operating.
- Set an escalation path. Keep current billing, technical-support and security contacts, and know who can authorize a migration. For sensitive or regulated workloads, ask counsel and your security or compliance adviser how insolvency, privacy and retention rules apply in your jurisdiction.
How to compare alternatives or continuity plans
No single provider or score fits every workload. Evaluate a replacement and your existing contract against the dimensions below, using a small representative data set and the workflows that matter most.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Export scope | Can you retrieve source data, prompts, configurations, logs, outputs, indexes and attachments, or only a subset? |
| Format and portability | Are files documented, machine-readable and usable without proprietary software? Are metadata and relationships preserved? |
| Migration effort | How much engineering time, testing, retraining or prompt revision is required, and what will the transition cost? |
| Access during a dispute | What happens to accounts, APIs and downloads after notice, nonpayment, suspension or an insolvency event? |
| Security and lifecycle | How are data use, sharing, retention, deletion, backups, incident response and administrator access handled? |
| Notice and transition commitments | Does the contract promise advance notice, a retrieval period, migration help or an escrow arrangement, and are those promises limited by exceptions? |
Warning signs worth monitoring
- Repeatedly delayed releases or support responses on a workload that requires dependable operations.
- Sudden reductions in usage limits, model access, service-level commitments or published documentation.
- Unexplained billing changes, prepaid-credit restrictions or requests to move customers to a different contract.
- Public statements about layoffs, a sale process, restructuring or difficulty raising capital. These signals require verification; none alone proves imminent closure.
- An export tool that exists only on paper, produces undocumented files or omits the records needed to restore a workflow.
When a warning appears, preserve your current data and configuration, ask the provider for written clarification and begin a controlled export. Avoid making an irreversible migration under pressure until you have validated the replacement and your legal or compliance obligations.
The practical bottom line for each side
For startup operators
Communicate clearly about service changes, preserve customer access for the period promised in contracts, maintain export capability and document retention and deletion practices. If a sale or shutdown becomes likely, a written transition plan can reduce customer harm and protect trust, although legal duties vary by jurisdiction and agreement.
For customers
Treat a vendor’s financial health as one input to continuity planning, not as a prediction. The most useful preparation is portable data, tested restoration, documented workflows and contract terms that explain notice and retrieval. Those steps reduce disruption if the provider cuts back, changes hands or closes, but they cannot guarantee a replacement service or a particular insolvency outcome.
