The key distinction is between closing the card account and closing Aeroplan membership: Aeroplan says points still in an account are immediately forfeited if the membership or Aeroplan account itself is terminated. Pending points, unawarded bonuses and card benefits can have separate issuer-specific rules.
What happens to points already in your Aeroplan account?
Credited Aeroplan points are in your Aeroplan account, not stored on the credit card. TD says points earned on an Aeroplan co-branded card accumulate in the member’s Aeroplan account regardless of which financial institution issues the card. That means changing issuers does not, by itself, require a transfer of points already posted to Aeroplan.

This applies to the Aeroplan membership balance, not necessarily to rewards still being processed by a card issuer. Confirm that the points have actually appeared in your Aeroplan account before cancelling or changing the card.

Pending rewards and bonuses are subject to the terms of the card that earned them. There is no single rule across all Aeroplan card issuers:

- TD: TD warns that closing or transferring a card account may result in forfeiture of bonus points that have not yet been awarded. Its card terms also require the account to meet the applicable bonus conditions.
- CIBC: Its Aeroplan Visa benefits guide says monthly points are awarded only if the card account is in good standing on the monthly statement date; otherwise, points earned during that period are cancelled.
- American Express: Its terms allow specified cancellation, reversal or deduction of points that were issued improperly.
These are issuer- and product-specific rules. Before acting, check the agreement for your exact card, the next statement date, and the conditions for any welcome, spending or anniversary bonus. If points are listed on a statement but not yet in Aeroplan, ask the issuer whether they have been sent and whether closure affects them.
What happens if you change your card?
A product change or a move to a card from another issuer is different from closing your Aeroplan membership. Points already credited remain associated with the Aeroplan account, but the replacement card may not preserve the old card’s benefits or pending rewards.

The table describes the distinction between an Aeroplan balance and card-linked rewards or perks; it does not establish the outcome for every possible product conversion. Check the specific card agreement before a change.
Which card benefits might end?
Points and card perks do not necessarily share the same outcome. TD’s current Aeroplan card terms state that airline benefits are no longer available when the account is closed, regardless of the reason, or when the credit card product is changed. Review your card’s terms for any benefits, certificates, insurance or other privileges tied to holding that particular product; do not assume they follow you to a replacement card.

How to avoid losing points or benefits when you cancel or switch
- Check your Aeroplan account. Sign in and record your points balance, confirm you are looking at the correct Aeroplan account, and check the account’s inactivity information.
- Check the card’s current rewards. Review the statement for points earned during the current cycle. Ask the issuer whether those points have been sent to Aeroplan and whether account closure or a product change could affect them.
- Review unawarded bonuses. Check the terms and your progress toward any welcome, spending or anniversary bonus. Ask the issuer how a closure or conversion affects a bonus that has not posted.
- Identify card-specific benefits. Check the terms for airline benefits, certificates, insurance and other perks, and confirm which end on closure or a product change.
- Keep Aeroplan membership open. If your aim is only to stop using the card, do not also terminate the Aeroplan membership or close the Aeroplan account.
- Check expiry rules after the card is gone. If the card provided expiry protection, review Aeroplan’s current inactivity policy and your account’s status after closure.
Could the points expire after you close the card?
Aeroplan’s public guidance describes expiry after 18 consecutive months of inactivity and says an email notice may be sent up to 60 days before points expire. The same guidance currently says point expiry is temporarily paused. Because that pause is a changeable policy, check Aeroplan’s live terms and your account rather than treating the pause as permanent.
Aeroplan lists ways to keep an account active, including earning, redeeming, donating, transferring or converting points. Its guidance also describes recovery options within six months after expiry: buying back expired points for a fee, flying on Air Canada, or getting an Aeroplan credit card, subject to conditions. These rules concern Aeroplan point expiry; they are separate from an issuer’s decision about unawarded card rewards.

- Aeroplan General Terms and Conditions explain that points remaining when a member terminates membership or closes the Aeroplan account are immediately forfeited.
- Aeroplan’s points expiry policy sets out the inactivity guidance, current pause notice and described recovery options.
- TD Aeroplan credit card information includes TD’s answer about where earned points accumulate.
Issuer rules are product-specific, and the available CIBC guide may not reflect the terms of every current card. For a particular cancellation or product change, use the latest agreement for that card and confirm details with the issuer.
