A YouTube copyright notice does not always mean the same thing. A match detected during a live broadcast may interrupt the feed; a scheduled removal request gives you seven days to act; and an effective copyright removal can remove the content and give your channel a strike. If YouTube removes an active livestream for copyright, its stated consequence is a copyright strike and a seven-day restriction on live-streaming access. An archived livestream can also receive a separate Content ID claim after the broadcast ends.
What YouTube may do while your livestream is live
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.”

If YouTube identifies a match, it may replace the live picture with a placeholder and warn you to stop streaming the material. If you address the issue, the broadcast may continue. If the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A live stream can also be terminated if the channel receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.

A detected match and a copyright removal request are not interchangeable. A match may affect the live feed, while a removal request is a separate process that can result in the content being taken down and a strike being applied.

Check whether the request is scheduled or already effective
“Takedown notice” can refer to an incoming request, a scheduled removal, or a completed removal. Check the notice status in YouTube Studio and the associated email before deciding what has happened or what deadline applies.
If the request is scheduled
A scheduled copyright removal request gives you seven days to take the actions listed in the notice to avoid removal and a strike. YouTube identifies deleting the content before the deadline and seeking a retraction as options. A counter notification is not available until the removal takes effect and the strike is applied.
Once the seven-day period has passed, deleting the content does not resolve a strike. Do not treat the scheduled window as a general seven-day appeal period; follow the specific notice and its deadline.

If the removal is effective
If YouTube reviews a copyright removal request and it appears valid, YouTube removes the content and applies a copyright strike. For an active livestream removed for copyright, YouTube says live-streaming access is restricted for seven days.
That seven-day restriction concerns access to livestreaming. It is distinct from the separate process for resolving the strike, and waiting for a strike to expire does not restore the removed video.
What happens to the livestream recording?
If you choose to archive a livestream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the stream ends. This is a post-broadcast outcome, separate from a copyright removal request. A detected match does not automatically mean that the archived video will be taken down or that a strike will be applied.
Rank #3
Whether the live feed, archive, channel strike status, or livestream access is affected depends on which process occurred. Check the notice and the video’s status in YouTube Studio rather than assuming that an interruption during the broadcast also determines what happens to the archive.
What to do after a copyright strike
YouTube lists three routes for resolving a copyright strike. Choose based on the facts and the status shown in Studio; these options are not equivalent.
- Complete Copyright School and wait 90 days. YouTube says the strike expires after you complete Copyright School and wait 90 days. The removed video is not reinstated simply because the strike expires.
- Ask the claimant to retract the removal request. A retraction is a route to resolving the strike if the claimant agrees to withdraw the request.
- Submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or an exception applies. YouTube gives examples such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. A counter notification is a legal request for reinstatement, not a routine appeal.
Understand the counter-notification risks
YouTube requires a full legal name and physical contact information for a counter notification and shares it with the claimant. If YouTube finds it valid, it forwards it to the claimant, who has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to prevent reinstatement. If the claimant does not do so within that period, YouTube says the content will be reinstated unless you deleted it.
Rank #4
Submit one only if you genuinely believe the removal was mistaken. YouTube warns against false information and misuse of the process. If you are unsure about your legal position, consider getting qualified legal advice before submitting it.

A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption. YouTube advises creators using licensed third-party content to ask the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. A stream may still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted, even when the creator has a license.

Before using third-party music or other material in a livestream, confirm that your permission covers live streaming and that the rights holder has handled Content ID for your channel. Do not assume that buying or obtaining a license alone will prevent a match.
