The feed stops while the VPS is rebooting. Your YouTube livestream resumes only if the encoder starts again, can access its saved stream URL and key, and reconnects. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings affect what happens to the broadcast during that interruption, but they do not guarantee a seamless return or one uninterrupted 24/7 event.
What happens during the reboot
- The VPS restarts and the encoder stops sending. While the server or encoder is down, YouTube receives no video feed. YouTube describes a stream as active when its servers are receiving data from the encoder; downtime lasts until the server and encoder are back and transmitting.
- The operating system boots. The encoder will not necessarily relaunch just because it was running before the reboot. On systemd-based Linux VPSs, starting a service now and enabling it to launch at boot are separate actions. See the systemctl manual and systemd documentation on startup targets.
- The encoder reconnects—or it does not. It needs to start with the right configuration, media source, and network access, then send the feed using the YouTube stream URL and key. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where those values are used: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- YouTube handles the broadcast transition according to its settings and timing. Auto-start permits the encoder to start the broadcast. If auto-stop is enabled, YouTube’s API documentation says the broadcast ends around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. If a reboot lasts long enough for auto-stop to take effect, the returning encoder may not continue the same event as expected. The documentation does not promise uninterrupted recovery after every disconnect.
YouTube’s Life of a Broadcast guide says an active stream status means YouTube is receiving data from the encoder. A running encoder process alone is therefore not proof that the YouTube feed has returned.

Will the livestream restart automatically?
It can, but only if both sides are ready: the encoder must relaunch and reconnect, and the YouTube broadcast settings must allow the intended transition. A reboot by itself neither enables the encoder at startup nor guarantees that YouTube will keep the same broadcast open.
- Encoder configured to run at boot: it may restart when the VPS starts, provided its command, configuration, input files, credentials, and network are available.
- Encoder started manually before reboot: it may remain stopped after the server returns. A previous manual start is not the same as configuring a boot service.
- Auto-start enabled: YouTube allows the encoder to start the broadcast. This helps with the transition but is not a promise of a seamless or uninterrupted event.
- Auto-stop enabled: if sending stops, YouTube documents that the broadcast ends around one minute later. Whether a later reconnection starts or continues an event depends on the actual configuration and timing.
YouTube documents the auto-start and auto-stop controls in Manage live stream settings. There is no universally correct setting for every 24/7 setup; choose based on how you want a short interruption and a longer outage handled.

How to make a VPS encoder return after reboot
- Configure the encoder as a boot-enabled service. On a systemd-based VPS, check that its service unit is enabled for the appropriate startup target, not merely started in the current session. The exact unit and command depend on your encoder and server setup; the systemd references above explain the distinction between enabling and starting.
- Check what the service needs at startup. Confirm its launch command and working directory, configuration and credentials, video or playlist paths, and required network access. If any of these are unavailable after boot, the process may fail to launch or reconnect.
- Verify YouTube is receiving the feed. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check for an incoming preview and confirm the stream is receiving data. YouTube’s broadcast documentation defines active status by data reaching its servers—not just by a local process being present.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop deliberately. Check the settings for the intended broadcast pattern in YouTube Studio. Account for the documented around-one-minute auto-stop behavior when auto-stop is enabled.
- Test a planned restart during a maintenance window. Observe the specific VPS image, encoder, service configuration, and YouTube broadcast behavior. YouTube recommends checking the preview and testing the encoder; its streaming tips also discuss testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection.
- Check the resulting recording separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a guarantee that a 24/7 stream will be archived as one complete, uninterrupted video. Check the Live tab and the recording after recovery; see YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
What a stream key and archive do—and do not—guarantee
The stream key is part of the encoder’s configuration for sending video to YouTube. A VPS reboot does not, on its own, mean the key has been reset. But the encoder must still be able to read its saved configuration after boot. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys, while its encoder setup instructions cover entering the stream URL and key.
Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will yield one complete archive. YouTube’s cited automatic-archiving guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that a 24/7 stream interrupted by a reboot will produce a single complete recording.

Common reboot recovery problems
- The VPS is back, but the stream remains offline: the encoder may not be enabled at boot. Check the service’s enabled state and whether it actually started.
- The encoder process runs, but YouTube has no preview: verify the configured stream URL and key, outbound network access, and whether the encoder is sending data. A running process is not the same as an active YouTube feed.
- The service starts and then exits: check whether its configuration, media source, working directory, or credentials are accessible when the service launches at boot.
- The broadcast ended during the outage: if auto-stop is enabled, the documented delay is around one minute after sending stops. Check the broadcast settings and the actual return behavior rather than assuming reconnection preserves the event.
- The livestream returns but the archive is incomplete or absent: the cited automatic-archive guidance is limited to streams under 12 hours. Review the Live tab and recording instead of relying on a complete 24/7 archive.
No fixed reconnect time or universal recovery outcome is established by YouTube’s cited guidance. The result depends on the VPS boot, encoder startup and configuration, connection, broadcast settings, and interruption duration.
