If you claimed a Steam Free to Keep promotion before its deadline, the game remains attached to your Steam account under a permanent license even after the giveaway ends. Steam removes the promotional free package from the store, but the completed claim is not normally revoked just because the clock ran out.
That result applies only to Free to Keep. A Free Weekend grants temporary access; after it ends, the game can remain visible in your library but continued play requires buying the full version.

First identify which kind of “free” offer you used
Steam uses several labels that produce very different account results. Read the exact wording on the store page or the publisher’s announcement rather than assuming every free download is a permanent claim.
Free to Keep
Steamworks defines a Free to Keep promotion as “a time-limited promotion that allows a player to permanently acquire a license for a game for free.” The important action is claiming the game while the promotion is active. The offer is a limited acquisition window, not a trial that expires later.

Free Weekend
A Free Weekend is a temporary license to play during a specified event. It is designed to let you try the full game for a short period, not to add a permanent free copy to your account.
Free to Play
Free to Play is an ongoing availability model. It is separate from a time-limited Free to Keep claim and from a Free Weekend. A Free to Play title can later change its business model or availability under its own terms, so do not use that label as evidence that a particular giveaway was permanent.

What happens if you claimed Free to Keep before the deadline?
The promotion’s end time stops new claims; it does not turn a timely claim into a trial. Steam’s Free to Keep documentation says the promotional package is automatically activated and deactivated around the offer, while the player who claimed it receives the permanent license.

- Confirm the label. Look for “Free to Keep” on the Steam store page or the associated announcement. Do not rely on a social-media post that merely says “free.”
- Claim the game while the offer is live. Add it to the Steam account during the stated promotion period. Merely opening the page, downloading files, or seeing the game advertised does not establish that the account received the license.
- Check the library afterward. Sign in to the same Steam account and confirm that the title appears in the library. This is a useful confirmation, although a library listing by itself does not identify which type of license produced it.
- Keep using the account that made the claim. The entitlement is associated with that Steam account. A different account, a borrowed copy, or a temporary sharing arrangement can produce a different access result.
- Return through the library after the store promotion ends. Once the free package is removed from the store page, the library is the relevant place to find a game that was successfully claimed.
The word “permanent” describes the duration of the promotional license under Steam’s account and service framework. It does not mean you own the game’s code or intellectual property outright, nor does it override account restrictions, a terminated agreement, legal requirements, or game-specific service conditions.

What if you missed the Free to Keep deadline?
There is no retroactive free claim once the stated window has closed. Steam removes the special package from the store page, so a player who never completed the claim must use the game’s normal purchase option if they want access.
Seeing the game in a browser history, having downloaded an installer, or having watched someone else claim it does not create a license. The relevant evidence is that the same Steam account completed the claim and can see the resulting entitlement in its library.
What happens when a Free Weekend ends?
Steam’s Free Weekend documentation describes a different sequence: after the event, the free package is automatically removed from the store page. Players who participated can still see the game listed in their Steam libraries, but Steam limits the available action to uninstalling it unless they purchase the full version.
That library entry is therefore not proof that the player owns a permanent copy. It can represent the expired weekend package. If you want to continue playing, purchase the full game through Steam or another officially supported purchase path for that title.

Do saves and achievements carry over?
Do not assume that every game handles a weekend trial in the same way. A Steam and 2K Free Weekend announcement stated that progress and achievements would carry over to a later purchase on the same platform for that particular promotion. That example is not a universal Steam guarantee.
Before buying, check the game’s own announcement or support information for details about save locations, cloud synchronization, achievements, downloadable content, and platform-specific progression. A title can preserve local or cloud saves while treating other entitlements separately.
Does the game stay in your Steam library?
It depends on the offer and on the license that created the listing. The following interpretations avoid the most common mistake—treating every library entry as permanent ownership.

A Steam license is not the same as owning the software
Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement states: “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” In practical terms, a Free to Keep claim gives your Steam account permission to access the game under the applicable Steam and game terms; it does not transfer copyright, source code, or unrestricted ownership of the software.

The Free to Keep documentation separately describes the promotional grant as permanent. Read those statements together: the claim is intended to persist on the account rather than expire like a weekend trial, but it remains a Steam license. Account closure, enforcement action, changes required by law, service discontinuation, or title-specific technical conditions can affect access. “Permanent license” should not be read as an unconditional promise that the game will operate forever in every circumstance.

Steam identifies two concrete differences for games obtained through Free to Keep:
- Trading cards: Free to Keep owners do not receive trading-card drops for that game.
- Reviews: Reviews written from these licenses can be visible, but they do not contribute to the game’s review score.
These restrictions do not change the basic access result. They are platform-feature limitations attached to the promotional license, not evidence that the claim was only a temporary weekend trial.

A Free to Keep promotion is permanent only after the account has acquired the license during the active period. Steam’s guidance tells developers that such promotions must last at least 24 hours and generally recommends keeping them under two weeks. Those are setup recommendations for publishers, not a promise that every game will be available for a full day or for any particular number of days.
Use the exact cutoff shown for the specific promotion, including its time zone when one is provided. A claim made after the package is removed is too late even if the announcement or a cached page still appears online.
Practical checks when access looks wrong
The game is missing from the library
- Verify that you are signed in to the Steam account that made the claim.
- Recheck whether the original offer said Free to Keep or Free Weekend.
- Look for a completed claim rather than relying on a download or a page visit.
- Review the game’s own announcement for a special cutoff, regional restriction, or separate redemption step.
The game is listed but will not launch after a weekend
That behavior is consistent with an expired Free Weekend package. Steam can leave the listing visible while restricting play to the purchase path. Buy the full version if continued access is important, then consult the title’s support information about save and achievement carry-over.
The game is listed but you are unsure whether it is permanent
A library listing alone is inconclusive. Determine whether the entitlement came from a completed Free to Keep claim, a normal purchase, Family Sharing, a temporary event, or another account license. The offer label and the account that claimed it matter more than the fact that the icon remains visible.

The bottom line for each offer
For Free to Keep, claim before the deadline and the Steam account receives a lasting license even after the store promotion disappears. For a Free Weekend, the end of the event ends free play; a remaining library listing is not a permanent copy. For either offer, distinguish a Steam license from ownership of the software itself, and check the individual game’s terms for saves, achievements, downloadable content, and other features.
